My Friend: Dude! Did you see the new Canis Wolf Born model?

Me: (scoff) Don't get me started about them.

My Friend: What?

Me: Marines.... on wolves? I don't know maybe that was cool in the Rogue Trader days, but it just feels like an inmature idea.

My Friend: Dude get over it, its awesome. And have you seeeeeeen the stats form Thunder Wolf Calvary? They get rending, you should totally load up on them.

Me: I bet that'll get expencive.

My Friend: Rending!

Me: Yeah the stats are OP, but I cant bring myself to using the models.

My Friend: Why?

Me: It just doesn't work for me, I don't think the models will look, and yes I know this is a game of toy solders... realistic. Look at Canis. How does he steer his wolf? His wolf claws would get in the way. If he tried to grab the reigns, he'd risk severing his mounts brain stem. That ain't cool. Thats why the model has to be turned to the side. So I'm sure he controls it with some (in air quotes) nuro-link, but that's a lame answer. How does he steer the wolf with no hands?

My Friend: (in total deadpan tone) ...Kegels

(the sound of my /facepalm was audible throughout the room)

all that being said, Im interested in seeing the actual TWC box set.

I think canis looks ok... the wolf looks a little on the chubby side but its not too bad.

I suppose he just has a very good bond with the wolf afterall it lets him ride it, so the wolf probably knows where he wants to be, sort of like gandalf and shadowfax... probably...err maybe. :)

i hate the wolf on the canis model, but could see me using canis' torso and arms in a conversion if i had some spare cash... i won't rush out to get a model that on the whole i dislike and don't care for the rules ofeither though, so maybe in a few months i'll pick one up on ebay for a conversion
Problem with the Canis model is that he's modeled onto the wolf. I bought him to use as a conversion for my wolf lord, hoping to be able to replace the torso and whatnot, and was super pissed to find out I'd have to take a saw to him. So I'm greenstuffing the hell out of his head and face to make him look different, and the arms are not the same, so I'm hoping no one will notice it's the same dude.

I thought I was alone about not liking the Canis model. The whole concept and fluff feels strange. Personally I will never aquire Thunderwolf cavalry nor the Canis model.

However, about the "steering" of his wolf. It mightbe as simple as feromones and small movements indicating where Canis wants to go.

Agreed... The model could be a lot better.

It's ok, but I expected something more.

I just don't get why so many monsters/creatures with open mouths that GW release have their tongue sticking out.

Hive Tyrant, Be'lakor, Broodlord the Thunderwolf to name but a few.

Is it a casting issue? I for one think it looks rather stupid. :D

Well seeing that dogs and cats are unable to sweat, they only way they can cool down is via panting. If you were being ridden by a big SM, you would probably be panting too.

In regards to insects and demons, not sure.

Why would he need to steer it? Just don't feed it for a few days and take it in range of something chewy.

Having said that though, the wolf does look like some short of show hound rather than a slavering beast.

I hope any boxed set of cavalry looks absolutely nothing like that.

Soldiers have been controling mounts with their legs for thousands of years... try riding with a 9 foot spear and a 25 pound shield. It's been done. Romans and prior did it with no saddle either... just a wool blanket. So... your argument about him not being able to control it is pretty... well, debunk. How ROMAN of the romanesque marines to control their mounts without their hands. Albeit, the SWs are far less roman inspiried than other marines... but, regardless, the point still stands. Trained cavalry men have been using their legs to guide and control their mounts for thousands of years, why not in 38,000 years?

It's a cool idea, and it's not more silly than demons riding mechanical demon bull/rhinos... people in armor weighing 2 tons, flying out of the sky, only to get bashed in the face by a lasgun, and dying a most inglorious death... floating vehicles... rifles that can't shoot more than a hundred feet... where the world is really flat, and the edges lead into the abyss...

Now, if you just think the feral, near-chaos army riding giant wolves, the symbol of their power (think many native american tribes and their worshiping of horses), is just dumb... then sure, it's just dumb, but there's no real way to legitimize your claim, either through logic (warhammer 40,000, in the grim future, there is only logic; won't work).

I don't like Canis, because I think his mount looks far too happy, and not aggressive at all. i see the art in the Thunderwolf Cavalry entry in the codex, and think to myself... "Now, THAT's scary!" but the model is lackluster, boring and not fitting, with that, i do agree. But marines on wolves? It's not any more silly than anything else in the 40k universe. Let's not even get into the blue men with no nose or lips, with the female organ on their foreheads.

The Canis Wolf looks like a giant jolly husky on the trot. It's jaws are too short and its chest is too puffed up. Even the pose is not threatening. The sculptor is obviously talented but I wonder where he got his sources from? Canis is Ok, but I would not have given him wolf claws. Definitely.

I would probably be dead from a broken back :D

Panting wolf, sure I buy that.

I'm not sure I think that's what the sculptor was aiming for though as so many other monsters suffer from the silly tongue syndrome.

I think it's a casting thing... A hollow mouth with rows of pointy teeth would have to be casted in two parts, which I personally would prefer.
