First Game 1k points

Whitewolf

Recommended Posts

Okay, so hoping to run my first game with the new dex today with some friends. We are hoping to run a small 1k point game due to time restraints. Seeing how I am restricted on models due to lack of funds for more, here is what I have so far:

Njal Stormcaller 275 WTN,RA,BP,SAGA OF MAJESTY

Wolf Guard 202 (ASC,PF);(PW,SB);(CF,SB);(WCx2)

Arjac Rockfist 170 TH,SS

Gray Hunters 190 BP,B,CCW,PG,MG,PF

Gray Hunters 180 BP,B,CCW,PG,MG,PW

As you can see this brings me to a total of 1017pts. Also, I would like to try some of the newer models/tactics from the dex. No word on objectives so trying to balance for whatever comes my way. Also, I have no transports so they will be foot-slogging it. We my be looking at a team battle or a 4 way battle. I think they want to kill my wolves :D

Only two possible opponents known; Orcs and Blood Angels. The third could be anything.

Well, it's generally considered poor practice to be over, especially by more than the cost of a Grey Hunter. I also think you're REALLY overdoing it on the special characters, but if you're restricted on number of models, drop a GH or downgrade a couple of weapons and call it done, I guess.

nope, there are 5. the parenthasis showed what each is armed with and Arjac counts as the 5th. And although Ajac is a named character he is listed as an upgrade, so IMO still part of the pack.

I also swapped Njal for a normal RP. Kitted out as such; Rune Priest (WTN,RA,SB,CotS,JoWW,LL,RW) it brings the HQ cost down to 180pts. This allows me to pick up a PP in each GH squad and come in to a normal total of 952pts.

Any more comments, suggestions appreciated.

My advice? skip the named characters. You can get a pretty nice RP for far fewer points, and still do plenty of damage.

I suppose if you have to do something you can keep whats-his-name, the guy with the throwing hammer. An RP with a few toys should be fine for your HQ though if you use him smartly.

Update on the game. Normal for me, failure for the wolves (well almost. I at least learned and had fun most of the time). Having the fewest models on the table is a big learning curve. I have always played wolves but if memory serves me I am sure I used to have more models than I did for this game. I now know I need transports of any kind. After pretty much 3 turns of move, run, wait, die I was able to get close enough to do some CC damage. Alas, my dice rolls failed me again. The game did bring to light some important questions/insights.

1. Does JotWW affect your own troops?

2. foot slogging against shooty armies stink (markerlights? come on :P ).

3. Living Lightning works pretty good.

4. Arjac so wanted to throw his hammer..... why did I have to fail my I test and succumb to the JotWW?

5. How can it be that 4 GH can charge a squad and kill no one and then fail all but one armor save. (I hate my dice!! ;) )

Anyways, not sure when my next game will be. Hope to get some models painted and more choices for my army. I do believe named models are side-lined from my forces for a little while, just having Arjac was to much of a points sink.

1. Does JotWW affect your own troops?

Yes

2. foot slogging against shooty armies stink (markerlights? come on :P ).

Yes it does. That's why you have to be strategic with cover and/or tansports.

3. Living Lightning works pretty good.

Really? What does it do for a living? Does it pay well? :o

4. Arjac so wanted to throw his hammer..... why did I have to fail my I test and succumb to the JotWW?

Which is why you make sure you're not casting JotWW through a 188 point model.

5. How can it be that 4 GH can charge a squad and kill no one and then fail all but one armor save. (I hate my dice!! ;) )

Because you aimed JotWW through Arjac and killed him, that's why. They're his drinking buddies. And you made them sad... T_T

LOL, thanks DV8. Loved the answers and comments. Oh yeah, I did use the terrain to the best of my ability. I think it was the huge no man's land without any cover that killed me. Still not sure how I missed seeing that when setting up the terrain. Or when moving for that matter.
