CAPTAIN RAKMAN’S LAST STAND

Legendary Unit

POINTS: 550

The defence of Cadia was a grueling and bloody task, bereft of glory as Imperial forces struggled for survival against the onslaught that vomited from the Eye of Terror. Yet, brief moments of honor and bravery sought to drive the darkness back from the Imperium.

Captain Rakman of the Subjugator’s 5th Company will forever be renowned for his defence of Kasr Gallen. The 5th Company had arrived on Cadia via an unstable warp tear that propelled them through the blockades of the Arch-Enemy. Although exhausted from recent campaigns hunting the Cell-Kin, Rakman would not stand down to the Black Legion and instead committed all seventy two members of his badly diminished Company to the defence of the savaged fortress.

For two days and two nights the 5th Company fought on with a ferocity never before glimpsed. The solid adamantium gates to the Kasr were chained back together by the suicidal actions of Sergeant Aron, the void shields were brought online by Librarian Noir sacrificing himself in a pyre of psyko-kinetic energy and Ancient Kadir slew Nral the Ironhearted in heroic single combat that lasted four hours.

Yet, despite the Subjugator’s heroism the Arch-Enemy brought greater and greater weight to bear on the small garrison and eventually the gates were shattered, the void shields were lanced, and score upon score of traitor champions poured through the breach.

So it was that Captain Rakman passed four orders to his men, that the broken and bloodied remnants of 5th Company should evacuate what few civilians of Kasr Gallen through the Rein River Valley, that they should reunite with any other Subjugator contingents on Cadia as swiftly as possible, and to not look back as he alone held the hordes of Chaos back.

For an hour, Rakman battled the host of the archenemy at the ruined gate of Kasr Gallen and none could stand before him. Possessed by the spirit of the Emperor the gallant Captain slew Kritili the Leaper, Stavos ser Kortro, the Dread Knight and any other traitor that dared to set foot within the dying city.

For all his strength, Rakman could not bear the massed cacophonies of enemy fire and clashing blades. Falling on top of a pile of heretic corpses, the Captain lost his grasp on his blade Titan and the legions of the arch-enemy laughed to see so noble a hero meet his end.

As the heretics began to tear down the walls and swarm through the cracks; elements of the Imperial Navy assembled overhead and began to rain down atomic wrath without ceremony on Captain Rakman’s grave, obeying his fourth and last order.

A week later, Lieutenant Dolinth led the twelve remaining Brothers of 5th Company into the nuclear wasteland that was all that remained of Kasr Gallen. Every block of stone or spar of adamantium had been twisted out of recognition, but miraculously Captain Rakman’s body and his blade remained untouched at the gates of Kasr Gallen.

FORMATION:

1 Captain Tare Rakman (Chapter Master w/Artificer Armor, Relic Blade (Titan), Digital Weapons, Hellfire Rounds)

SPECIAL RULES:

Valor Will Not Be Denied: Captain Rakman is immune to instant death, and will instead take a single wound from any attack that would cause instant death.

Titanic Strike: Titan is an ancient blade, salvaged from the battlefields of Abbrucheld centuries ago inscribed with glowing runes proclaiming the wielders bravery and strength. Every assault phase Rakman can choose to forgo attacking normally and instead place a large blast template centered over Rakman. All enemy and friendly models under the template suffer an automatic S5 AP:3 attack.

Fly You Fools!: Captain Rakman’s standing orders were for every Imperial man, woman and child to leave Kasr Gallen. Captain Rakman cannot join any unit.

These Are My Coordinates: If Captain Rakman is slain the Imperial Navy begins to rain down destruction on his last known location, in particular his personal ship the “Wary Dancer” will seek to avenge their decease Captain with particular fury. Centre the large blast template on Rakman’s corpse, all enemy and friendly model’s under the template suffer an automatic S10 AP:1 attack. Every shooting phase afterwards, the template scatters 4D6.

My...my coordinates have been sent Admiral. Kill them, kill them all. For the Emperor! FOR THE EMPERO-”

-Captain Rakman, Last Words

I like it, particularly the fluff part. One question, does Titanic strike also affect him? I'm not entirely sure about these are my coordinates, it would be very bad on horde armies, but I like the concept(especially as he is over the price of a baneblade ;) )

I have 2 questions on the Titan Strike.

1) Can it be used when he's not in close combat?

2) Why does it have an AP value when its an assault phase item? It seems odd to have an assault phase item that ignores power armor but leaves terminator armor untouched.

I think Titanic Strike would be better used as a AOE Wind of Chaos.

Wounds on 4's with no armor/cover saves allowed.

With the These Are My Coordinates, I feel that it shouldn't last multiple turns (the fleet only has so much time to focus fire on a single target) but instead I'd probably use the Apoc. Barrage marker and set it at 3-4 shots. Or mix it up a bit more and do 1D6 shots.

The point cost might be slightly too high. I think 450-500 seems more appropriate actually. The Chapter Master is about 1/2 of those points and the Orbital Strike is the other half.

Otherwise I like this datasheet, simple, fluffy and effective.

I was under the Impression Cadia's skies were full of Chaos' air support, and that the Imperial Navy only managed to barely hold the Traitor ships from leaving the Cadia system in masse, but not enough to allow small groups to slip out.

Unless this was from the beginning of the war. However, for this points cost this sounds pretty good.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS:

Bannus:

BALANCE: Below Average. Kudos for original thinking. However, a single model that can never join a unit just won't make it on the Apoc tabletop. The price is high and he is an easy target.

USABILITY: Average. Just takes building a single model makes this one probably the most affordable to make, but the vulnerability of the unit really hurts.

ADHERENCE TO THE BACKGROUND MATERIAL: Average. Excellent story and way to "think outside the box" - but it does represent one single character at one single moment in time of a very long and protracted war. How many times can this guy die during that war?

Corpse.:

Quite an entry. I'll be brief, since it seems quite custom as it stands. Perking on a losing battle rather battle worn victors that obtain new skills.

Outstanding balance, it is a model requiring to be put somewhere without a special mode of speed to be used sacrificially. Usability is outstanding, since it is one model. Adherence is outstanding….

Gillyfish:

Good. Very characterful and may be a lot of fun, plus easy to use.

Honda:

Above Average. I like the flavor of this entry, but why on earth would anyone spend 550 points for a relic blade and an orbital bombardment? Also, I don't get the point of [Fly You Fools!]

Delete or rework to something that could have an effect on game play. Maybe units that fail a Ld run 3D6 or 4D6.

JamesI:

Above Average. I like the concept. Titanic Strike I would prefer if it completely ignored armor saves rather than dealing with an AP value, and I want to know if it can be used outside of combat. The bombardment is powerful, but balanced by Rakman's Eternal Warrior. If Rakman were not an Eternal Warrior he would die too quickly allowing too many orbital bombardments. Also, Titan Strike is unclear if Rakman is harmed by it. Clean up those few issues, and this one is ready to publish.
