DOOMED ONE, CHAMPION OF MALICE

Legendary Unit

POINTS: 50 + MODELS

The esteemed Champions of Malice are known as "Doomed Ones". Devout worshippers of the Renegade God, they are directly blessed with otherworldly powers. However the Lost God's power comes at a terrible price as the soul of his Champions is quickly depleted. Only the most dedicated and powerful of his agents has the will to endure his God's patronage.

FORMATION:

1 Chaos Lord or Chaos Sorcerer

SPECIAL RULES:

Mark of True Chaos (25 points): Units with this mark radiate with the pure essence of the warp. All units within 6" without the Mark of True Chaos suffer -1WS, -1BS and -1LD values.

Dreadaxe Daemon Weapon (40 points): Units with the Mark of True Chaos may take the Dreadaxe Daemon Weapon. In addition to acting as a Daemon Weapon, this weapon ignores all Invulnerable Saves.

Fury of the Abandoned: Units with the Mark of True Chaos gain the Preferred Enemy Rule when engaged in assault with units from the Daemonhunter, Witch Hunter, Space Marine, Dark Angel, Space Wolf, Blood Angel, Black Templar, Chaos Space Marine and Chaos Daemons codex, to represent their hatred for forces of the Imperium and Chaos alike.

Well personally I think that basically all of this options are waaaay to overpowered.... -1 WS,BS and LD in 6" of your character for only 25 points is really nasty.....and completely ignoring invulnerable saves + beeing a daemon weapon for 40 points is an absolut nono as well in my eyes...that'd be more like 80 points or something like that...

Also...preferred enemy rule against all marines and ordos? for free? In combination with the two above things? That's like auto hits with no saves...I don't think so...

I'm guessing that these units are reference to Malal..?

If so there should be some effect on Chaos units nearby? Something like Cypher's dissension rule?

Also since Malal has imagery associated with parasitidity how about a rule being able to replenish wounds -maybe even incorporated into the Daemon Weapon instead of instagib ?

The model costs...200 points.....and you say it like that's a lot??? sorry but with this options at hand the model should be more like 300+ points, if not more, after all he could even slaughter a primarch n stuff with rules like that....even primarchs don't ignore invulnerable saves....as far as I know only C'tans n calidus assassins and maybe some titans n stuff do.....got the direction this is going?

I have to agree, that daemon weapon should never fail to get its points back, and easily makes this formation worth 100pts base.

The mark of true chaos is a horrifyingly powerful thing... and one reason Ive been avoiding all the formations in it. Worth more than 25pts.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS:

Bannus:

BALANCE: Poor. The mark's abilities are OTT and hurt its balance - same for the "preferred enemy". That said, I think this unit is better applied as part of another unit or a homegrown Codex. Nothing about this sheet specifically applies to the Apoc setting.

USABILITY: Average. Single model is a minimal demand, but just not Apoc appropriate.

ADHERENCE TO THE BACKGROUND MATERIAL: Good. As with the similar sheets, the background material is well thought out.

Corpse.:

This brings back memories of Malal in 2nd edition before the revoke. The further representation in 3.0 and 3.5. But, I fail to see if he would have any followers at all and some Malal worshipers do follow a lord or sorcerer. It says in no way that it replaces the force weapon of a sorcerer, and it works as a daemon weapon but it gives the option to use either. Neither does it cover other discrepancies of having another mark. Assuming this won’t be capitalised, hoping that those holes can be filled (intentionally of course by the creator) I will give it a rating with that in mind.

Balance outstanding for a single model is not game breaking in apocalypse, especially in a small scale of a 13" area effect (1" base, +6" on both sides). Usability is outstanding, since yes, it’s just a single model someone has from 3.5 could represent it. Adherence to fluff is outstanding, since there was a missed part about Malal's mark I wont mention here.

Gillyfish:

Average. I liked the Doomed One... The price is high but it grants some characterful rules and it only applies to the one model. It's not quite in line with current background, but I like the fact it refers to more obscure material and still feels 'right'.

Honda:

Average. Meh, kind of "so what". Other than the fact that it is the Chaos faction that shall not be named, what is really that different about it? That's part of the reason why the 5th faction faded out, it really didn't fit in.

JamesI:

Average. A few problems here. I feel the Mark of True Chaos is overpowered (though not by a lot.) Giving a daemon weapon that ignores invulnerable saves to a sorcerer (and thus has warptime) would rip through almost anything. If this one was Lord only, it would probably be ok. Also, preferred enemy is a big bonus, perhaps furious charge or rage instead.
