VOLATILIS SQUAD

Legendary Unit

POINTS: 140 + OPTIONS

Essentially the honour guard of the Sons of Malice, the Volatilis have the sole right to the most sacred equipment in the chapter. All have had centuries of campaigning in other chaos legions against all of the emperors filth. The Volatilis were created when during the during a large campaign to eliminate the smaller renegade chapters in the Eye of Terror, where much of their equipment stores were destroyed and only the most protected and sacred weapons remained. Those who could take that equipment were named the Volatilis. After they figured out their supply line issue, the Volatilis had grown to members of great power, and established their own sect within the Sons of Malice.

It has been long since the incarnation of the Volatilis, and they have proven that they are an essential key to the chapters success. Most significantly was the destruction of scout fleet Necatis Lupos, possessing five cruisers and one massive battleship, all of which were destroyed. Famously, Meretrix Volatilis Pugnat said to a commander screaming oaths to the emperor "Your words to the false lord are but gibberish to the culture of chaos,” and proceeded to execute him.

This is kind of an insane squad. I mean, yeah it's only three dudes in Artificer armor, but compare it to Honor Guard: Essentially a squad of three Chaplains at higher Initiative with lightning claws, for only 25 points more than a same amount of Honor Guard. This squad needs some work.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS:

Bannus:

BALANCE: Poor. Too small of a unit to really be developed specifically for the Apoc setting. It should be a standard homegrown 40K unit.

USABILITY: Average. Minimum models that are easily represented - not appropriate to Apoc, but easy to field.

ADHERENCE TO THE BACKGROUND MATERIAL: Poor. Honour Guard are found in Space Marine armies - not Chaos Space Marine armies. Let's keep it that way.

Corpse.:

I think this is a sort of Chaos Lord spread among 3 models and removing IC status to do so. Assuming only one Mercurios Aurum is in the unit, and the sacred weapons apply to any and all options granted to them by the chaos terminator weapons (can’t take power weapons as an option, redundant for Lightening claws) its swirvy at best. A unit that rips into about 160 points, but easy to field using jump packs and requiring to either deep strike or move in behind other units. It’s a hard unit to actually USE rather then being easily made and fielded with no clear strategy other then the usual chaos melee.

Balance is a excellent - mainly due to being difficult to actually put into action where Chaos already excels, Usability is excellent - again being few models it’s nice but it’s also very limited in its own function, unless, perhaps, you plan on three reaper autocannons with jump packs. Adherence, though in best intention I say it’s outstanding, only because it fits with Malal in few in number, and great in power by being self destructive (most likely deep strike).

Gillyfish:

Average. Too potent and generally unclear as to how it works.

Honda:

Average.

JamesI:

Good. I would prefer writing out the options rather than saying anything terminators can take. Basically, this is a 3 man terminator squad with better stats, lightning claws, but a worse invulnerable save. The list is fine; the cost is too low, but not by a lot. A 3 man terminator squad with IoS and paired claws would be 125. So here, we add +1 wound to 1 model, +1 WS and init to everyone, but lose a point of Invulnerable save. Say 160 points in my opinion.

Thank y'all (I guess :P). May someone change the cost to 160 for me? That sounds like the general consensus.

Also, Bannus, I beg to differ about your fluff opinion. The fluff was designed around having an honour guard like unit to chaos space marines all the while being fluffy.

My point is that each army has its strengths and weaknesses. Honor Guard are for Space Marines - not Chaos Marines. It would be like designing a Defiler like unit for Space Marines. Each needs to be kept seperate from the other.
