An Oathbreaker redeemed.

Greetings and hail, brothers!

Some of you may remember that I failed my vow concerning the recent Gathering of the next Great Hunt painting challenge, and that I set a penance upon myself which can be found in this post: Link.

On Monday I faced my Imperial Guard enemy, and the results of our fight is contained within this thread as my first ever battle report. I've attempted to picture the end of our turns top-down pictures using VASSAL, and even though it's not exactly perfectly accurate, I think it gives a good image of how the end of a turn looked to us. All of these images are hosted on flikr, and can be found in this photoset

I've also written a bit of fluff to frame the battle report with a prologue and an epilogue. It's not necessary to read it, but if you're interested it can be found in this post: Post.

Reader beware! The battle report is kinda long, and even though I tried to be concise about what happened each turn, a little fluff slipped in now and then :)

Prologue.

Mission: Capture & Control was rolled. 3 objectives were rolled, and I set down the first in the middle, and the second near the southern edge of the board. My opponent set his down near the northeastern edge of the board.

Deploment: Dawn of War was rolled. I won the roll for starting, and chose to have the first turn.

I deployed my Wolf Lord with his two Fenrisian companions next to the middle objective, and Rhino Alpha and Beta west of the objective-hill.

My opponent then deployed his two Infantry Squads together, (forming a 20-man platoon), and his 5-man Company Command Squad to the east of the top objective, and Heavy Weapon Teams 1 just west of it. He also deployed his Platoon Command Squad and his Heavy Weapon Teams 2 on the northern piece of terrain. And last, but not least, he deployed his 10-man Veteran Squad with Gunnery Sergeant Harker just 18” away from my two rhinos in the ruins.

Turn 1.

As the sun rises on the deathworld, the Wolf Lord and his two wolves begin their sprint towards the enemy lines, easily catching their ripe scent in the wind.

Rhino Alpha and Beta gun their engines to the max, and engage their smokelaunchers as they barrel forward.

Fenrisian Wolves Pack Alpha and Beta trot in from beyond the fogs of war, and lope towards the squad of veterans barely visible.

The three Lone Wolves also emerge from the mists of dawn, and together with their wolves charge towards the lines of the guardsmen, alongside of Fenrisian Wolfpack Gamma, who flank to the right of the abandoned Bastion in the southwestern area of the battlefield.

Rhino Gamma takes to the field behind the lone wolves, slowly chugging over ruins and debris, slowing its advance.

As the Spacewolves have begun their deadly gauntlet towards the lines of their enemy, the tanks and troops of the Imperial guard slowly lumber into firing positions, 6 Ratling snipers sneaking in and setting up their oversized lasrifles, lining up killshots.

The two Basilisks light up Rhino Alpha and Beta with searchlights before narrowly missing both vehicles with their huge cannons.

Bane Wolf 1 speeds into position behind the veterans, and even though the vehicles are obscured by thick smoke, both Gunner Sergeant Harker and the heavy bolter on the Bane Wolf opens fire upon Rhino Alpha, immobilizing it and destroying the pintle-mounted stormbolter.

Heavy Weapon teams 1 and 2 open fire upon the now illuminated Rhino Beta, but manage only to remove the pintle-mounted stormbolter on the vehicle.

The Primaris Psyker surveys the battlefield as he enters behind the large platoon on the west, and frowns in concentration for a moment, before projecting a searing bolt of lightning towards the Wolf Lord, killing his two lupine companions, but leaving the Wolf Lord alive and unwounded.

Bane Wolf 2 enters the battlefield, and fires its heavy bolter towards the lone Wolf lord, grazing him with a heavy round and causing a wound, despite his indomitable amour.

The Master of Ordnance gestures while screaming into a comms-device, and a blast emerges from the heavens, scorching the earth between Bane Wolf 2 and the Wolf Lord.

As the roaring waves of ordnance and the snarling bark of heavy bolter rounds dies down for a moment on the battlefield, the Wolf Lord spies movement in the northeastern corner of the battlefield, and curses loudly for a moment as a Deathstrike Missile Launcher wheels in through the breaking morning mists , its huge and terrifying payload beginning to grind noisily into firing position.

Turn 2.

Snarling through bared teeth, the Wolf lord storms towards Heavy Weapons Team 1, but falls a few steps short before he can lunge upon them.

All of the Fenrisian Wolfpacks continue their charge across the battlefield, advancing at varying speeds.

The Lone Wolves split, and Lone Wolf Alpha and Beta head west around the middle objective, while Lone Wolf Gamma continue up along the eastern side of the battlefield.

Blood Claw pack Alpha disembark from their immobilized Rhino, and with guttural howls and Fenrisian battlecries charge towards the veteran squad in the ruins, slaughtering them all to the man, before trying to spread out in preparation for the incoming doses of enemy fire.

To the east of the slaughter, Rhino Beta fires up its engines, and attempts to tankshock Heavy Weapons Team 2, but as it barrels into the rocky terrain, a stray metal pole from a collapsed building wedges itself in the tracks of the transport, and immobilizes it.

Rhino Gamma lurches to life, and the engine of the transport growls like a hounded beast as it pushes onwards.

The Primaris Psyker and the Platoon of 20 Guardsmen he’s attached to concentrate their fire on Fenrisian Wolf Pack Gamma, but the psykers’s lightning flares a few paces too short to touch the wolves, and only four of them fall to the combined lasgun fire of the guardsmen.

Receiving orders from the nearby commanding officer, Heavy Weapons Team 1 fire off three concentrated blasts of accurate lascannon fire, and disarm, immobilize and shake Rhino Gamma, stopping it dead in its tracks.

Off towards the western side of the battlefield, Heavy Weapons Team 2 only barely manages to shake the crew of Rhino Beta with a lucky shot.

Bane Wolf 1 wheels into position and splashes Blood Claws pack Alpha with bone-searing acid.

Basilisk 1 and 2 also fire on the Blood Claws, and between them, the three vehicles manage to kill all but four Blood Claws, bloodied but far from broken.

Bane Wolf 2 wheels slightly, and then douses the Wolf Lord with deadly acid and heavy bolter rounds, but nothing manages to pierce through the tough Tactical Dreadnought Armour.

The Ratling Snipers all fire on the Wolf Lord, but not one of them manages a piercing shot.

Sadly, not even the might of the Wolf Lord’s armour can stand up to the combined fire of the Platoon Commander’s squad, and the plasma-spitting death of the Company Commander’s Veteran squad, and he is struck dead by two plasmabolts, melting through his armour, black carapace and internal organs.

Turn 3

The Lone Wolves continue their advance onwards towards the enemy lines, spurred on by the loss of their Lord.

Blood Claw pack Beta spill out from the immobilized Rhino Beta, and though the terrain is hard to traverse, they reach Basilisk 2 and Heavy Weapons Team 2 with fangs bared and weapons held high. Moments later, the guardsmen lie slain, and the Basilisk has been pulverized by a powerfist to the ammo-compartment, though the resulting explosion leaves a Blood Claw wounded.

Rhino Gamma, immobilized and shaken, issues a grinding noise akin to an inhuman growl, and the engines fire back into life as the Blood Claw driver hammers the pedal to the metal.

The four surviving members of Blood Claw pack Alpha snarl in ferocious, headstrong rage as they charge towards Bane Wolf 1, lobbing grenades and holding powerfist high.

Fenrisian Wolf pack Alpha catches the scent of the crew inside the Bane Wolf, and swiftly cross the remaining distance between them and the vehicle, hurling themselves against the Bane Wolf. The reinforced jaws of the Cyberwolf crush the tracks beneath the Bane Wolf before it can move, and as the powerfisted Blood Claw punches through the armoured side of the tank, killing the crew in one fell blow, the Bane Wolf falls silent. The wolves start moving around the ruins, as the Blood Claws bare teeth, ready to face the remaining Basilisk head-on.

Fenrisian Wolf pack Gamma bare their teeth and barrel into the terrified platoon of guardsmen, killing seven guardsmen and losing two wolves in the resulting melee. As the wolves smash through the ranks of the guardsmen, fear spreads as a plague from the Primaris Psyker into the rest of his platoon, and as they turn to run, they are hamstrung and killed by the wolf pack before they reach safety. The wolves swiftly move beyond the carcasses of their prey, golden eyes pointed in the direction of the Company Command Squad.

The Platoon Commander and his squad receive barked orders from the Company Command Squad, and immediately being running towards the eastern side of the battlefield, away from Blood Claw pack Beta.

The Company Command Squad itself opens fire on the nearby Fenrisian Wolf pack Gamma, and with combined acid and heavy bolter from Bane Wolf 2 manages to kill all but a single Fenrisian wolf, and the Cyberwolf.

Though battered, the two wolves are more furious than they are frightened, and stand fast even in the face of overwhelming firepower.

The remaining Basilisk and the Ratling Snipers converge on Blood Claw pack Beta, and together manage to kill off all but four of the Blood Claws, who howl angrily and bare their fangs in defiance rather than retreating.

The remaining Heavy Weapon Teams fire their lascannons towards Rhino Gamma, but nothing manages to harm the surprisingly durable transport.

The Deathstrike Missile Launcher suddenly issues a horrible screeching noise, and front-mounted klaxons begin to wail ominously, then stop, leaving a dead silence ringing throughout the battlefield.

Turn 4

The Lone Wolves move in on the Platoon Commander and his squad, firing storm bolters as they relentlessly move towards the enemy. They kill all but two of the guardsmen, and force the guardsmen to go to ground in order to avoid further injuries.

The Fenrisian wolf and Cyberwolf from pack Gamma fearlessly charge into the Company Commander’s squad, and manage to kill a plasmagunner before the guardsmen take out the remaining ordinary wolf, leaving one mighty miffed Cyberwolf, still in close combat.

Blood Claw pack Beta catches up to the Ratlings, and even though they’re fast, the Ratlings crumple under the weight of Fenrisian steel.

Blood Claw pack Alpha wrecks the remaining Basilisk with a well-placed powerfist and three krak-grenades, and slowly being advancing towards the last of the enemy soldiers.

Fenrisian Wolf packs Alpha and Beta slowly course around the side of the ruins.

Rhino Gamma speeds forwards, lurches violently around, and ends up with the rear door neatly parked just in front of the top objective, engines rumbling in a low guttural tone.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3432/3992902876_7190590491_b.jpg

As Blood Claw pack Alpha turn their backs towards the wrecked Basilisk and start toward the rest of the enemy, they are suddenly engulfed in a sea of flame as a lone guardsman appears behind them, hotshot-laspistol brandished in one hand and wicked knife glistening with poison in the other. Guardsman “Sly” Marbo has arrived on the battlefield.

At the same time the remaining Bane Wolf spins and drives towards the four Blood Claws left from pack Beta, and the pups vanish in a blast of acid before they even get the chance to fight back.

The three Heavy Weapon Teams fire their lascannons at the exposed backside of Rhino Gamma, but even another lucky stray shot is only enough to stun the drivers momentarily.

The fight between the remainder of the Company Commander’s Squad and the Cyberwolf of pack Gamma is swiftly ended, as the augmented wolf rips out the throats of the guardsmen, and hungrily eyes the Heavy Weapon Teams.

Turn 5

Lone Wolf Gamma charge the Bane Wolf, but the vehicle’s thick armour protects it.

Despite the damaged tracks, Rhino Alpha somehow lurches into movement and slides in between the ruins and the wrecked basilisk, allowing Guardsman Marbo no way out.

Fenrisian Wolf pack Alpha quickly encircle him, and even though the guardsman manages to kill a single wolf dead, he is ripped to pieces by the battle-hungry wolves.

Fenrisian Wolfpack Beta ambles on towards the eastern fringe of the battlefield, their role in the fight played out.

Lone Wolves Alpha and Beta move closer towards the Heavy Weapons Team, but neither of their stormbolters manage to bring the enemy down.

The lone Cyberwolf charges at the Heavy Weapons Teams, but only manages to kill off one of the gunners before it catches a bayonet to the chest, and falls dead.

As the Deathstrike Missile Launcher wheels its deadly payload into position, Blood Claw pack Gamma hunker down in their rhino, and send a silent prayer off to Russ.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2431/3992903680_5a53688e0e_b.jpg

The crew of the Bane Wolf ignore the immediate threat in front of them, and instead attempt to pierce the armour of Rhino Gamma with the tank-mounted heavy bolter, but none of the shots do any damage to the stalwart mechanical beast.

The Heavy Weapon Teams too aim their weapons at the rear of Rhino Gamma, but even their powerful lascannon shots fail to do anything but sear the hide of the transport.

As the Deathstrike Missile Launcher finally brings its terrifying payload to bear on the battlefield, all grows silent for a few seconds before a gigantic missile descends upon Rhino Gamma, and all is obscured in the following cloud of fire, dust and ashes. As the smoke and ash slowly clears there is naught but astonishment in the faces of the remaining guardsmen when they see a battered and dented but otherwise unharmed Rhino Gamma!

At this point, we rolled to see whether or not the game would continue. We rolled a 5, and so we continued onto…

Turn 6

As Blood Claw pack Gamma spill out from their apparently impenetrable transport, the fight that issues between the battle-hungry Blood Claws and the remaining Heavy Weapon Teams is short and bloody, the Blood Claws spreading out around their captured objective as they prepare for any movement from the enemy.

Bellowing a Fenrisian warcry, Lone Wolf Gamma slams into the Bane Wolf, and together with his two lupine companions manage to destroy both armaments of the tank.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2516/3992904482_de203ab571_b.jpg

The crew of the Bane Wolf, desperation shining clearly in their eyes, attempt a last ditch effort at taking control of their lost objective, and throttle their engines, meaning to go through Lone Wolf Gamma, and push Blood Claw pack Gamma off of the Objective. As the tank suddenly picks up speed, Lone Wolf Gamma hurls a meltabomb into the front armour of the tank, standing fast in the face of death as the heavy piece of machinery barrels towards him. Before he feels the impact, the front armour of the Bane Wolf is blasted open, and the machine stops dead before him, wrecked beyond repair.

The Deathstrike Missile Launcher, missile spent and insane driver cackling with insane laughter, attempts a similar maneuver. Moments later, it is stopped by a powerfist-wielding Blood Claw, never reaching far enough to contest the objective.

Once more, we rolled to see if the game was over, got a 2, and thus ended the game. I had all but annihilated my opponent, leaving only his empty Deathstrike Missile Launcher left on the table, and had captured his objective.

good, but i felt his list was much better than yours and that you were lucky to play halfway up the field at first. if it was dow. you would of lost alot to those basilisks. the guards list was quite goo,d but there were some parts that could fo been spent better elsewhere. like the veteresnas. the banewolfes, basilisks and the death strike missle. he also misused marbo i fee.

your list wasn't as good as his, but you got the better tactical advntage of not having to spend half the game getting your rhinos up the field of fire.

nice report though. clear and easy to understand and read.

thanks
