Sinsinatus
This past Saturday and Sunday Darkside Comics and Games in Sarasota had their semi-annual Iron Painter Challenge. This was an event modeled after GW's original Iron Painter competitions, not the watered down "take-em-home-and-paint-em" events they do now. We started the event at noon on Saturday with each participant bringing at least 25 assembled and primed models. Only work done in the store would count so several veterans brought their painting lights from home and even seat cushions. Included in the $5 entry fee was pizza for dinner and bagels/doughnuts for breakfast. This allowed us to spend as much time at the tables as possible. Down at the far end of the gaming room we were set up in is a large screen TV and DVD player. Marathon movie night combined with marathon painting - how can you go wrong? 20 challengers began the event. A couple nutters brought unassembled stuff but you can imagine how they fared. I myself brought 41 models with hopes that I could beat my old record of 35 IG from the February event. Here is my force just after beginning... http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu184/DarkSidePics/Event%20Pictures/2009%20Oct%20Iron%20Painter%20Marathon/DSCN4336.jpg The painted model on the far left is the finished exemplar that I wanted to match. It was not considered in the judging. About 4 hours in I took a look at my pace and reevaluated what I thought I could finish. By my estimate, I would come up short or model quality would suffer. You have to plan for fatigue and the shakes as the marathon continues. I decided to drop the 5 wolfen and the Iron Priest bringing my force to 35. Ending with fewer models than the last time was not something I wanted to allow. Here is the pic of what was ready at the end of the competition (dread was still on my paint table in this photo - I was so burnt after 24 hours in the shop that I almost forgot it) http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu184/DarkSidePics/Event%20Pictures/2009%20Oct%20Iron%20Painter%20Marathon/DSCN4389.jpg Not a bad effort if I do say so myself. Out of the 20 starters, 10 were still in it at the end that had enough done for judging. Check the links below to see all the finished entries as well as other photos from the event. Sinsinatus
Yes, I have started on finishing the models today. I hope to have all of them (including the ones I stopped working on early) done by next Tuesday. I will hopefully also complete the lightning claw captain and the Games Day Rune Priest as well. This means that my collection of space wolves will be complete and painted except for... classic long fang with no helm (hopefully with lascannon) 4th ed metal scouts (3 std, 2 plasma pistol, melta, plasmagun, and sergeant) Trickster Canis the standard rune priest Ulric the Slayer Njal Stormcaller (new) and the Lone Wolves diorama If anyone knows of a metal Space Wolf model that I haven't got in this list or my Iron Painter list, please let me know. Thanks, Sinsinatus Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/180999-24-hours-of-space-wolves-pic-heavy-the-aftermath/#findComment-2143962 Share on other sites
Lord Noble
That, sir, is amazing. I'd have brought a squad to paint and I wouldn't have gotten half of them painted. Congratulations! -J Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/180999-24-hours-of-space-wolves-pic-heavy-the-aftermath/#findComment-2144048 Share on other sites
Sinsinatus
After pausing for a mini-vacation, I have started back up with a group of Wulfen. After these it is time to start on some of the more modern models. Next up, Rune Priest, Ulrik the Slayer, Games Day Rune Priest, The Trickster, and the new Njal Stormcaller. I haven't gotten around to picking up the Canis fig yet but will soon. I still need to find the 7 metal space wolf scout from last edition. After that, only need the Lone Wolves. Hetacondries
I've been known to do 12hr painting sessions on a few models (maybe a squad and some chars) but this is fantastic man. kapturowski
That's impressive. I would probably manage to paint three models in that time :D. I really like how you paint you yellow. Which colours do you use? Sinsinatus
I really like how you paint you yellow. Which colours do you use? My "yellow" is pretty simple. Base the area in bestial brown. First coat, leaving some shadow around the outside, is of tausept ochre. The next is a thin layer of iyanden darksun that I go over again on the highest areas. To highlight I mix 2:1 bleached bone and iyanden darksun. Final highlight is straight bleached bone. You can pick out very sharp highlights with a little skull white. Happy hunting, Sinsinatus Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/180999-24-hours-of-space-wolves-pic-heavy-the-aftermath/#findComment-2164687 Share on other sites
ShinyRhino
Very nice work, especially considering the lack of sleep. That's a really cool idea for a shop event. Maybe I'll have to finagle our shop owner into running somehting like that.
