Emperor's Scourge
One thing I was struck by while reading the new Codex was a sparsity of fluff in the codex. They devoted single paragraphs to each Great Company...not even bothering with numbering them. I'm currently trying to pick a Great Company to go with, but hesitant to take Ragnar's which seems to be the popular one judging by everyone's shoulder pads. Space Wolves are one of the most fluffy armies in 40K and they spent most of the codex on troop descriptions and virtual mini adds. I was thinking about Bran Redmaw's Company. Is that the 12th Company? Anyone know of a better resource for info on the various Companies? Brother Captain Kezef
Wolves don't follow the Codex Astartes, each Compoany is molded, shaped and deployed by it's Lord as if it's an independent army. Sometimes Logan tells a Wolf Lord to go somewhere, other times they take off on their own. As far as organisation, colour schemes and such go, it's all at the whim of the company's Wolf Lord. Vash113
Sparsity of fluff? There's a ton of fluff in the Codex, there may not be a sizeable chunk on each Great Company but it's far more than we had before and coupled with the famous battles and other mentions we know a LOT more about the various Wolf Lords and their Companies now than at any other point in the history of the army. In short there are no other sources on the Great Companies apart from Ragnars and even that material is sparse in the extreme. What we have now surpases pretty much all that came before. Also as others mentioned Great Companies aren't numbered, the 13th Company is only known as such because it's the outsider, the empty 13th stone in the Grand Annulus. In short play whichever Great Company you want or make your own. Lord Ragnarok
Agreed with Vash, they expanded on the GC's which we didn't have in the last dex (and I don't think we had in 2nd ed. dex). I also like how they tailored the generic options with a wolfy descriptions (Drop pods, and the contrails being called Claws of Russ). They also gave us some battle histories like they've been doing for each recent dex. Lots there for us to flesh out more of a story (which many of us wolves love to do..just give us a smidgen of info and we'll turn it into a nice story). Grey Mage
Yeah... I miss that once again they didnt reprint some of the really cool sagas from the 2nd ed codex, nor did they mention some of the fluff that came out in IAs- like our creation of the Predator Annihilator. That being said, each unit has nearly infinitely more fluff from a SW point of veiw- previously we had "Take this for Xpts." for alot of those things. While Im not 100% on all of it, I do like that they made a true attempt at it, and think it was well done as a whole. Emperor's Scourge
I've seen it said that Redmaw's is the 12th Company on this board and others though...you guys sure they're not numbered? I know they don't follow the Codex Astartes, but that doesn't necessarily mean they didn't have unit designations during the Great Crusade that still hold today.
