Rune Priests or Njal?

White Hunter

Recommended Posts

So I was looking at my HQ options, and was thinking about using two rune priests in TDA one with WTN and Beastslayer, and the other with Chooser. but when I looked again, I realized that those two would be the same cost as Njal in runic TDA. So I was wondering which option does everyone think is better?

*shrugs* It depends on a few things..... 1rst of wich is, do you want lord of the tempest?

2ndly... do you want to be able to take Beastslayer on another HQ choice?

3rdly, What size of battle were you going to build for? 1 Kickass HQ is great at say 1k or 1500pts, but at 2k youll want to spread your power throughout the list and buff several units as opposed to 1 right?

So, what do you think?

Agreed. Also, another point to consider is the thematic one. Do you really need two Rune Priests in a relatively small battle? We've got several other excellent HQ options available to accomplish whatever jobs you want to get done; perhaps you would be better served with one of those. Or you might only need the one HQ selection, and can use your remaining points on units.

I used Njal against Deamons last night, and he was my best unit,

He killed the KEEPER with JOWW thingy..... <_<

his bird killed a chariot and feind (well did the last two wounds)

He eventually killed:

Keeper

5 Fiends

1 chariot

Daemon Prince.

He was pretty good, and my rune priest killed 3 demonettes..... i vote Njal

Yeah, I play 2500 point games mostly, and have decided on Grimnar as one HQ. Here is what I was planning to do depending on the decision.

1. Njal in with some sort of TDA squad as a second rock hard combat unit, Probably run him in a Land Raider with some WG friends, or maybe a drop pod.

2. Use one rune priest to go with some WG to go MC and daemon hunting, and another one to Buff a GH squad that is holding my home objective, and using lightning fry anybody I see, and tempest to keep everybody away from me.

The passive storm actually works with Njal's line of sight. He must have line of sight to the models you wish affected. The only vehcile option in the list would be a rhino, as RB and LR's do not have firing points for him to see out of. Forge World models may offer something else, not sure.

I have used him riding solo in a GH rhino to pretty good effect. He had to deploy next to it and embart on my first turn, but he pretty much tooled around in it causing havoc.

I too, am torn about two RP versus Njal. I think you will probably get more mileage from two rune priests. The biggest benefit I have had from Njal was his blocking of enemy powers on a 3+. In two test games, he blocked every single one. This is hard to put a hard value on, but I it is fair to say this hamstring effect on armies like dual lash and Eldar are formidable.

Thing is two reqular RP gives you a 4+ block and cover more area (2x24" range if deployed apart), so it really is a toss up. On top of it, two RP can come in at 200 points, bolster two squads, spread their effects and give you the ability to take bot good defensive and offensive powers (assuming by now everyone knows what those are).

I believe I will take Njal for a few more test games, but end up with a RP on a bike and one in Runic armor for well under 270 pts.

my two fangs,
