khaosthorpe
Hello All, I would like to say thank you for all the help the community gave me for my ork problem and this is why I come to you with another SW tactica problem. My friend who I play with, who has been playing orks, which is the army I asked for help before, is now going to build a Imperial Guard Army. He has told me what his army will mainly be made up of. Here is what his partial army would be, there will probably be holes in it and still points left over but it sounds like he is mainly focusing on the HS. Oh and this is a 200 pt game. Army A Command squad 10 Shock Troops 10 Shock troops 3 Leman Russ Punishers(or the variant) 3 Leman Russ Punisher(or the variant) 3 Basilisk (or the Variant I have found other tactica out there regarding IG and I have been going through the codex and I somewhat know what I could be taking, but I am still looking for the greater wisdom of the community who has played a lot longer than me And more info would be awesome. Thank You in advance. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/181231-sw-tactica-vs-imperial-guard/ Share on other sites
Sharpsilver
I bet you mean 2000pts? ;) 6 Leman Russ Punishers. We'll, that for a start is a huge mistake on his part. He's gimped his objective capabilities right there. He'll have tons of Power for Infantry killing, but you can take advantage of this. I would recommend some regular Land Raiders with TL Lascannons and a Multi-Melta on top to deal with those Punisher tanks. They are immune to those 120 S5 shots. However, if he takes 3 Basilisks with those Earthshaker cannons, he'll be able to glance your Land Raiders on a roll of 5 and penetrate on a six. That's a tiny chance for a weapon which itself is ordnance. Put some Long Fangs in each Land Raider armed with Multi-Meltas and Lascannons. Unload the goodness onto those tanks. For your troops I would dump some Grey Hunters into Rhinos, since they will be massacred if you don't put them into something which can survive the punishers. Some scouts would also do well here. Armed with some meltaguns or missile launchers to take out those Basilisks.. since they are the only real threat in the game. With this list against the possible list of your friend... You'll decimate him. Sharpsilver Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/181231-sw-tactica-vs-imperial-guard/#findComment-2145726 Share on other sites
Skirnir Ragefang
Deep Strike via Droppod in his rear. Throw Scouts at him and bring lots of Meltas! Deep Striking Land Speeders with Meltas. The squadron rules make his tanks more vulnerable. Use Grey Hunters to the max, either two meltaguns or with a Wolfguard with Combimelta. If the armour is eliminated, you only have to deal with twenty measly guardsmen. Nothing a few Boltershots can't solve. Fellblades
Scouts and Fast Attack anti-tank will work wonders for you. I play IG all the time, and occaisonally tank heavy lists like this. The key is to stay mobile and spread out enough to limit the damage he can do. If you put your troops into transports, the only thing that can hurt them is those Basilisks, so make those #1 on your priority list. And take advantage of the squadron rules here, he has to keep those vehicles in coherency, meaning its a lot easier to get off a multiple assualt on them, and secondly, any immobilsed results count as destroyed, meaning with meltabombs, a penetrate will destroy the tank 2/3 of the time. BDS
If your going to tool your list just for this guy, I would suggest the following: 1or 2 Ven dreds, MM. HF. DW launcher in DP 1 or 2 WG with combi Melta in DP or GH squad with MG's and other goodness. Keep all remaining squads in rhinos. Not sure on the range of those punishers....under 36 or even 24...take Long Fangs with 48" range and deploy out of range....moving forward means moving towards your rhino troops. Speeders probably will die very quickly. Take some wolves....why? To tie up his squads and force shots away from your SW's. Remaining elite spots should take scouts with MG, WG with, combi flamer + MoW, Pwr wpns. This squad can do it all. If you end up taking two scout sqouds...take small ones mayeb with MB's. The LR is also a good choice, though i would put GH's w/2MG, WG with HF/CF, WL with SoW to split off and take on troops all day. Don't forget also about he lowly whirlwind...excellent versus guard. Not a terrible basilist hunter also. If you want to get particularly nasty, a DH inq lord with mystics, MM's, Psycannon is a good devastaor squad and allows the use of a callidus assassin. She can and will neutralize about anything you chose in his lines. Drop your pods right in front of his lines or split is forces. If he hangs back due to LF's yoru scouts will shine, if he rolls forward to get in range your rhino borne troops will shine. Remember your smoke launchers and use your own rhinos to block all the LOS possible. neutralize his basilisks then punishers, use wolves to meanwhile tie up his hvy wpn infantry....once tanks gone...infantry will fall. Grey Mage
IG gunline with alot of tanks? At 2000pts? 60 Grey Hunters- each pack with a Powerfist, 4 packs with 2x Meltagun and 2 packs with 2x Flamer- in Drop Pods. 1280pts. 2x Long Fang Packs- 5 man, 4x ML each- 330pts. 1510pts. Wich leaves about 500pts for a speeder or two, an HQ, and a WG squad in a DP. As just a base try it out kind list. Quillen
Like the guys above said he sorta gimped himself. We pop tanks better then most. I have faced one of these lists and totally smoked it. I did it with Rhinos full of GH and 2 Preditor Annilators. A couple of LR with twinlinked Las will smoke them no problem. Still there are other options. Someone said a Dread DropPoding in with Multi Melta and Heavy Flamer, Drop the Heavy Flamer and put in a Missle launcher. Why? Heck a Strength 6 will still splat Gaurd and the ectra tank busting will help with bad dice rolls. I would go with 3 or 4 Drop Pods with GH packs with 2 meltas and a Plasma pistol. Maybe a Fist. I usually run fist heavy. They come in and nuke 4 tanks on thier way in. Then they move on other targets. You also have 4 scoring units to his 2. I love an all drop pod force. This means his first turn there is nothing for him to kill, then you smoke half his force, and he is playing catch up. All depends on your tactics thou. Long Fangs are going to be useless here. They have no fodder and will die fast. Ignore LFs on this. Can't Drop pod them or use them in a LR cause they are heavy. Can't move and shoot so will die befoe doing anything. Or Die after one turn. I would run with 7 Grey Hunters (Meltas all the way) in Drop Pods. A pack of Wolf Scouts with a melta and 2 Plasma, and a couple of Dreads with melta and Missile Launcher drop podding. You drop in and kill each tank in turn. Then Move on objectives. Should be a solid win. Also play all the mission types with him with this list. He will learn firepower can some in many ways and objectives are as important as kills. Also nothing like skunking someone in all the missions. If I had no pods or Proxy I would go with 2 Land Raiders with a Preditor Annilator. Or 2 Pred and a LR. No Long Fangs. They will not live against that list to do anything. This is a tighter fight. You will lose stuff. And with bad luck could lose the fight. Still LRs are alot tougher then people think. A couple or even 3 should break him.
