Finally made the jump... a new Grey Knight player!

Finally made the jump, now that my Black Legion force is basically done. A huge force though I still have a nice amount of Termies to paint and Abaddon to convert. In the future I might add a Defiler but I have enough forces to field 2500pts easily and should be able to field possibly 3000pts if my painting is done.

I procured the Daemonhunters Codex and the only Grey Knight blister in the store.

It will be a longterm project. GK's are expensive but given that it's an elite force, i'll put some extra time in painting them.

A few questions regarding that:

- Parchement. Is bleached bone a good 'easy' solution for parchment?

- The codex says undercoat with black. Would codex grey or the likes be better?

- Basically if i follow the codex advice I use mostly boltgun metal and than add a few whifs of silver through drybrushing. How much is best? Would it be effective if i focsu on the 'edges' of the armor, painting those explicitly silver?

- The cool Glaives... what would you experts advice me as an easy way to give the weapons a sort of 'crackling energy effect'? Paint blue 'thunder' on it? Or somehow paint the edges of the blades blue or yellow?

I take it the Grey Knight squad boxes do not come with Inquisition transfers?

Hi and welcome to the Grey Knights! I love this army, the models and the fluff are outstanding in my opinion. The rules could use an update, but hey.

Painting stuff:

- I use flesh colored paint for parchment for an old paper looking appearence

- I undercoat with black, use armor steel with a thined out blue ink on the main parts of the figure and true silver highlights along the edges of the figure. I think it looks really spectactular.

- I just give my blades a white paint job, can't help there.

The boxes don't come with transfer sheets, no. On BOLS there is one for download that I've used for transports.

I find bleached bone is good for all parchment, just not huge canvases like massive books or something

I paint my grey knights like this

chaos black undercoat

boltgun metal basecoat

mithril silver drybrushed all over the model

wash with watered down asumen blue

gold bits = shining gold

parchment = bleached bone

I do the NFW's like this.

ultra blue mixed with a touch of ice blue base coat

ice blue drybrushed on top

watered down asumen blue wash on the blade

the power sorce is painted gold

the handle is painted chaos black

but you can go crazy with the NFW's. I know that once, someone did luminous green ones. I might try red or pink in the near future. orange could be nice. or just paint them mitril silver or white as those colours look quite good on it. purples with ice blue thunder is a good choice too. just, please, don't paint them boltgun metal, they lose a lot of flavour then

Welcome brother to the ranks of the Grey Knights!

I paint my knights like this

Base coat dark grey

Paint black carapace black(ribbed parts between armor plates) along with other things that need it.

Thin coat of boltgun metal

Liberal application of very very very very watered down black ink everywhere

highlight mithrill silver

Ink certain parts w/ watered down blue ink

I prefer to do a lighter undercoat because you can see where you haven't painted much easier also it makes highlighting a little bit easier because you don't need as muchso you can shade easier. The black ink makes up for the lighter undercoat by darkening the recessed parts of the model. Basically the bright parts are lighter, and the darks darker, with less complete coats of paint so that you lose less detail.

For parchment and other odd things that contrast with the armor as much, I tend to put a lot of blending into(the more shades of a color I get the better)

Base coat scorched brown

Coat of buebonic brown(not sure if thats the reaper paint name or GW right now but its just a almost tan brown)

coat of Bleached bone

highlights of skull white

chaos black scribbles with ultra fine brush

As I get past the scorched brown I tend to water down my paints more and more to really add some texture with varying shades

For the NFW I haven't gotten to painting mine yet because I haven't made all of the conversions to them. I hate every grey knight having the same chunky halberd when its a weapon that is custom made for each knight. I'm also working on a magnet system for their arms so I can use a normal carry case without damaging them.

And finally feel free to ask anything else here as well.

I magnetized my GKT's. Each GKT has a 1/8" x 1/32" neo-magnet in-set into the torso where the arms should mount (drilling was a bit tough). Each arm has the same size neo-magnet fixed into the drilled out socket. This is to allow me to swap out Nemesis Force Weapon for a Thunder Hammer and the Stormbolter for a Storm Shield, Psycannon or Incinerator.

The problem I encountered was that I did not anticipate the weight of the pewter Psycannon arms, which exceed the strength of magnets by a very small margin. The "fix" this, I drilled out some very small holes n the torso and mounted alignment pins to the Psycannon arms (and to one Nemesis Sword arm). I used standard paperclips for the pins, which are polarized due to the magnet they are mounted next to; this increases the tension of the field effect while also stabilizing the arm itself for a very solid hold. All of the other arms are free to rotate as needed for ease of model placement.

Got my magnets from K&J Magnets (.com).

Is a magnet system useful for them? They only have halberds, incinerators and psycannons no?

For the psycannon and Incinerator models there is no problem transporting them in the same types of foam that you transport things like normal space marines in. However, the normal Grey Knight's halberd is a pain in the butt because the model holds it such an angel so that no matter which way you lay it in the space all of the weight is resting on the 1mm thick halberd shaft. I don't want to magnetize them for the sake of swaping out weapon loads, but rather so that I can transport my knight in my normal case disassembled so that the halberds don't get damaged, and not have to play with a bunch of one armed grey knights.

For drilling it works best if you use a jewelers drill press, or a normal one if you have drill bits in the right size. Using a jeweler's drill I managed to drill holes in 40 grey knights in about ten minutes and my hands weren't cramped afterwords.

I have enough GKT to make all the different builds without needing to pin each one for customization. But after I get done repainting my GKPA the GKT are up next for a strip and repaint. So maybe that will be changed soon.

-Bleached Bone, washed with Gyphonne Sepia, highlighted with more Bleached Bone. I use this for books, purity seals etc.

-I undercoat black, even though my Knights end up grey.

-I find that the boltgun doesn't look good on large areas, like on Land Raiders, so i do my Knights Codex Grey (as i believe they should be). I base Adeptus Battlegrey, wash with Asurman Blue, then Codex Grey with a final highlight of Fortress Grey.

-I paint the blade a dark version of the colour i'm using for the lightning. For my main squad, i therefore use Orkhide Shade. I then use a thin line of Emerald Green to pick out the lightning, on top of which i put a very thin line of Bilious Green. I also highlight the edge of the blade in the same manner. I definitely find that less is more when it comes to the lightning effect.
