New Player Needing Some Advice

Prototype

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I've just started 40k and am looking into playing the Space Wolves. However, from what I understand, players in the area are extremely competitive even in casual games, and I do not have the budget to randomly buy things just to see what works, so may I ask, what would you guys suggest for me to get to play against these people, and hopefully win some of my games?

I'm also open to all advice on gaming, painting, et cetra. Many thanks!

No Idea, I have almost every option and still don't know what to do first.

Feel free to follow my similar thread, as hopefully people will be helping me. It's located at

Welcome to the Fang.

As for what to buy... well the first things your going to want would be a box or two of the Space Wolf Pack and a Tac Marine Box... to mix and match a bit.

Gives you plenty of bodies to work with, and with some nice mix and matching you should be able to get 2-3 GH squads, some WG, and a WGBL or a WL made out of them.

Good investements after that include Whirlwinds, Dreadnaughts, Bikers, and Long Fangs *Read: Devastator Box* for good support options, followed by more HQ choices and GHs.

Perhaps you have a points value youd like to try for? Something small like 500 or 750 pts that people would play with you for a bit?

I appreciate the replies thus far :whistling:

Maybe say, 1000 points that can be built up to 1500/1750. Don't think anyone usually plays above 1750, I'll have to check.

I was told that Space Marine-type armies don't do well here because everyone is playing with tournament-level armies in casual play, but I'm really hoping you guys could give me advice on how to play against these people and not lose 100% of my games. I do accept the fact I will probably lose my first few games, but it needs to be a non-dead end kind of situation, a.k.a. hopefully with time I'll start winning more than losing.

I've already ordered a battleforce, and I have an old 13th company Storm Claw box set that I bought of Ebay cheap many years ago that has been gathering dust. Should I take Rhinos, or Drop Pods? How many/what type of vehicles should I use? I'd be honest, I like the idea of a crazy melee viking army, but I was told that Space Marine-type armies need to have both shooty and melee power to win.

Of course they do... everyone needs a bit of both to win... though some get away with less than others.

So, do you like the idea of being able to throw down half your army anywhere on the board?

How about the ability to throw down alot of armored tanks and brush of firepower less than S5 as if it wasnt there?

Or do you like to maximize your bodies on the field and rely on long range firepower to keep your footsoldiers safe?

What do you suggest, to make sure they get into combat, and not get cut down before reaching the enemy?

I was reading the rules for Drop Pods, apparently you can't assault from them so that would leave them vulnerable for a whole turn....

But then again you can't assault from a Rhino either.

Not sure if you have yet, but first thing for a new player to do is buy the Rule Book, then buy the SW codex. Read both, go down to your local store and just say outright your a new player to whoever is running the store and would like to get a demo game or two.

After you do this your going to be way better off understanding what building a list is all about and make a more informed choice in what to buy per what way you like to fight. Such as Close Combat oriented troops like Terminators and some GH or a in your face DP army, though thats a bit more advanced tactics. Mech lists, Ranged lists, take on all comers lists. Fast lists with lots of Jump Pack, Land speeders, and Bikers....

Thats the beauty of the game, there is no one way to play or one way to build a list, it comes from experience and personal tastes.

Your can never go wrong with getting the battle force box, one should do it until you get a feel for the game.

WG Vrox.

You need to be mobile and strong in close range shooting/melee but with enough long range support to remain dangerous even if you are avoiding upfront confrontation. A good balance is what is needed.

You would be best off starting out buying yourself 2 boxes of 'Space Wolf Packs' and one box of 'Wolf Guard Terminators'. After that you can really just fill in your army as you wish with other kits and use the bits in those boxes to have a well customized force.

Read through as many threads as you can on here, but be warned, there is not one hard and fast super army for the Wolves as yet because the dex is so new. I will say that the strength of Space Wolves is their strong and cheap Troops, not in their many toys and fancy HQs. So try and focus on building up a core of troops. 2 10 man units of Grey Hunters and 15 Blood Claws will probably be all you will need up to around 1850pts. You will want to order some Melta Guns from GW as well. They do a pack of 5 from their Mail Order service. And perhaps order a couple of Power Fists from a reputable Bitz dealer. Any Marine Power Fist will do.

The big decisions to make are what to then add to your list. You have already identified one issue; Pods or Rhinos. I would go with a mix of both if you can. Probably start with Rhinos first. You may one day want to move up to a Land Raider Crusader and a Wolf Priest for your Blood Claws, but that is quite a hefty investment.

The difficulty in answering a thread like this is, unlike say the Chaos 'dex, there are so many useful options in the SW book that I cannot say you DEFINITELY will need one over the other. Wolf Lords are great, Wolf Priests are great, Rune Priests are great, all the Special Characters are good. Drop Pods have benefits as do Rhinos and even Razorbacks!

But you will definitely need a core of good troops, so go for the 2 boxes of Space Wolf Packs and then buy yourself what you like the look of. But just read a bunch of stuff on here and see what you think works and doesn't. Use your own judgement.

Many thanks for the replies thus far.

WG Vrox: Yeah, I already have the rulebook and the codex. Actually, it was the fluff/pictures in the codex that inspired me to start the army, not the rules :D

SamaNagol: A mix of them? Hmm....actually I was thinking of doing something like a single Drop Pod Grey Hunter squad with a WG carrying an assault cannon in terminator armor and like 2 plasma rifles, just for some shooty goodness, and while the enemy is busy with that, I get almost one turn to rush in with Rhino's for the other squads.

Are Terminators a good buy? I was told they are potentially a waste of points.

TDA can be good- just remember they dont fit in Rhinos *hatches are to small* and they take up 2 spots in a DP *seats are to small*.

They are solid gold in units of themselves, or soaking up AP 3 wounds in a footslogging squad though.

As for rhinos- you can assault of out of them, but only if the rhino hasnt moved yet. Wich means you have ot take the risk fo sitting in a rhino, inside of 12" of your enemy, for a whole turn. Much like dropping out of a DP eh?

Its war, theres always risks. I like DPs personally, but theyre a finesse army like my Eldar. If your new to wargaming then I would do at 100pts 2-3 mounted GH squads for your troops, and the rest of the army built to support them.

So today I managed to get a Wolfguard terminator squad, as per the advice given.

May I ask a few questions regarding them:

1) Should I field them all in one unit, or split them up?

2) I'm confused as to how combat resolution would work when lets say, I give a squad of Grey Hunters a Wolf Guard in Terminator Armor.

3) What equipment should I give them? I'm afraid of putting them together with the wrong weapons, I don't want to pull them apart and reassemble them...

Many thanks

your first question should be answered by just play testing them

im not sure what your second question is asking

third some will say magnetise but thats difficult to do for a new starter so its difficult to answer, the chain fist, thunder hammer debate rages on

1) A bit of both. You have to purchase atleast 3 of these guys at once, so youll always be running some of them together. You wont have enough places to put them ALL to begin with... so building for diversity is good. I suggest:

PW+Combimelta- its cheap, and useful.

2x Wolf Claws- Its dead killy, and not horribly expensive.

TH+SS- its a classic combination with alot of kick.

Powerfist and Stormbolter Or Combi-weapon- relatively cheap, and good addition to a footslogging squad.

Assault Cannon and WC or PF- keeps it cheap, for a heavy weapon guy... and if you ever deploy all five youll be happy you made him. I prefer the Wolf CLaw on this guy personally, but thats me.

ALTERNATIVELY: If you want your Wolf Lord, or perhap Rune Priest to be in terminator armor then now would be a good time to make them first... if you find all the bitz you need in this kit. If not, you can start... and perhaps pillage some other models soon. An HQ model is important, but know what you like first.

Of course you can always change him back to a WG later with any of the Wolf Lord setups... so dont worry to much.

2) You cant sweeping advance after combat if there is a TDA armed model as part of the pack... sorry. Otherwise hes part of the unit in all respects- the enemy cant target him, he doesnt take a seperate LD check, nothin... hes just a really impressive squad seargent.

3) See question 1.

Problem with a lord/priest in Terminator armor is I can only stuff five in one drop pod, I was thinking of using that as a delivery mechanism haha

Still uncertain if I want one, three or five(lol) Drop pods in my army though, to make full use of Drop Pod Assault.

By the way, I've opened a second thread, regarding the different types of Blood Claws. Would appreciate some feedback there too :P

EDIT:

Do you guys think I should invest of a Land Raider of some sort? Crusader or Redeemer? The normal one looks a little .....purpose-diluted.
