In Space Hulk no one can hear you paint...

Hi all,

I'm taking a break from my other modelling commitments to get a decent start on Space Hulk so it's ready by Christmas!

First up is a paint test, please please please leave criticisms and comments as I really want these to look good!

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj11/hwd48/Space%20Hulk/1%20-%20dead%20dude%20paint%20test/IMG_2113.jpg

The metallics aren't finished yet, this is simply a test for a red.

It looks a bit patchy in the close up so a better scaled shot may be more useful.

And as if by magic;

The gold on the helmet is finished as is the red on the power-fist...

The red seem a little too bright to me but it might just be becasue the rest of the model is so dark?

Comments please

firstly - i'm not a great painter so feel free to ignore me entirely.

anyway...

love the gold on the helmet.

the inner highlight coming down from the chalice on the left side is quite thick and stands out a lot - you might benefit from thiniing this/blending it back into the darker central colour more.

I think the reds fine, once you get more of the armour painted red it wont look to bright. On the gold I think you need a bit more definition / highlights on the extreme edges. The helmet looks good but I'd be tempted to add some shading in the recesses just to help define it a bit more, and mix in some Mithril silver into the gold and apply it to the extreme edges.

Cheers Guys,

For the gold I washed with Devlan Mud and then re-highlighted back up to Shining Gold.

What would you use to add shading, another layer of carefully applied devlan mud or a brown ink..?

I'd be tempted to use some thing with a bit more pigment in it, washes are good but I find to get quicker results the good old fashioned way of getting a wash is the best. Mix a 50/50 of scorched brown and chaos black and add plenty of water so its at a milky consistancy, and then line the recesses with the wash. You may find that additional chaos black is required depending on how dark you want the shading to be. Start of 50/50 and take it from there.

Devlan mud would work just as good though, I've had some good results using it on silver metalics in the past.

I disagree with you title, as my wife and kids can "hear" me paint. Or, rather, the explatives which come forth from the table when I'm painting.

Nice job so far. Also, thanks for telling us the recipe as I love when good painters/modelers tell us how they are accomplishing things. Helps me be a better painter/modeler.

Looking great so far :D I still haven't started mine yet! what I would say is that some glaze work might benefit you with the red.

Try making a glaze of blood red/red gore/red ink/and agent such as klear floor polish/water, and use like a thinly painted wash. a layer or two of this will belnd in your highlights, making a great looking model, look even greater.

These are two variations, the first had very light glazes for blending, before weathering:

Whereas the clack etc on this empire general have had strongler glazes to keep the colour broght:

I hope that helps! and can't wait to see more!!

What proportions of these works, i.e. 1:1:1:1 or..?

Would a 'glaze' of just Baal Red do the same job? I had considered doing this already but wanted comments as I had it as is... I might give it a wash of Baal Red this evening and post some comparisons for comment...

A bit more progress;

As it stood this morning following a red glaze last night;

With a few hours work this morning

And finally a close up of the helmet, which I think is the best bit...

More progress!

I've photos from a few days work but i'll stick them all in here...

I've changed the painting method to make it a bit quicker! Rather than applying about a million coats of Blood Red, i'm going with 2 coats of foundation red and a couple of coats of Blood Red. It gives the same effect for about half the time!

And now for today's progress

Sorry for this, but I uploaded the above pictures when the site was being a bit odd and it seems that the fact I posted them got lost.

This is therefore a very shamless bump to get more comments!

Nothing wrong with that mate :)

Looking great, any chance of a photo possible without the flash? as a side note, theres a nice new bit of kit available from Argos now, a mini photobooth! ideal for model photography!

@ Cyrox: correction, its on the tesco website! luminox home photography studio kit 206-1073

The flash isn't on but there is a very strong light source directly above combined with a long exposure time... I would have taken better pictrues but I was in a bit of a rush! I'll have to check out that studio kit, it sounds like it would come in useful!

Thats a nice base red there, may i ask how you have done the shading?

The red is done in 6 stages;

1 - 2 coats of Merchite (foundation) Red, keeping them thin ish for an even coverage

2 - 2 coats of Blood Red, again thin coats to keep it even

3 - 2 layers of Devlan Mud wash - the first is very thin and all over, the second is stil thin but only in the recesses/shadows

4 - coat of Blood Red, leaving the darker colour in the recesses and shadow areas.

5 - line highlight of Blazing Orange around the edge of each armour plate. 'Heavier' line for brighter spots. I try to blend this into the blood red by painting inwards on each plate a bit...

6 - Wash of Baal Red all over to smooth things out

If you want, when i'm painting the next guy, I can photograph at each stage and post them up?

Cheers for the comments guys

it might be a bit late, but tr to use either blue/black wash or a purple to shade as it will give more shading than devlan mud (imo)

heres a cloak i did that way

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/calgar.jpg

sorry its the best pic i've got for the cloak. i painted it red gore, gave it a 50/50 black, blue wash for shading. i made the wash using the GW washes, with an equal mix of water to wash, then reapplied in areas i wanted to be darker. used watered down red gore to build the colours up, then a watered down blood red, then 50/50 blood red golden yellow before a very light highlight of golden yellow. i then added a purple glaze to the entire thing, reglazing if needed.

and the start of my space hulk guy, again with purple shading

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/DSC00669.jpg

http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp86/stinkenheim/ultrasmurfs/DSC00667.jpg

i painted a dark red mix (think it was 3 parts red goe, 1 part regal or midnight blue), shaded with purple ink, highlighted up to red gore, then 50-50 red gore/blood red, thinned blood red then thinned blazing orange. i then glazed with pruple again. the red n the purple ink helps to tie the colours together liek a normal red glaze, but the blue will help define the shadows more.

i think your models very well painted, i like the brightnessof the gold, i just think that some areas of the red could do with more definition in the shadows, they seem pretty flat in areas. its still a very nice start though, keep it up
