First Battle with Wolves Rocks!

I've been picking up Space Wolves figs ever since I heard the new codex (by Phil Kelly!) was coming out. Let's just say I haven't been disappointed and now have an 1850pt force assembled and am well underway in painting.

 

Last night I had a chance to put my force on the table against a live opponent, NtD, who was playing Orks. NtD is a very good player who plays lots of regional tourneys, so he was a very challenging opponent who knew his army well.

Setup: Spearhead

Orks select their quarter and setup first (NE corner). Space Wolves setup in the SE corner with Long Fang packs (LF-1 & LF-2) spread cover two Ork axes of advance. SW forces are pulled back away from the setup boundary to make Orks come as far as possible before they can charge. Land Raider (LR) with Logan Grimnar & Terminator Wolf Guard (TWG) take position in the center of the SW position with the Rune Priest (RP) in a Rhino with a small Wolf Guard (WG) detatchment and a Grey Hunters Pack (GH-1) in a Rhino on the West edge and a Grey Hunters Pack (GH-2) in a Rhino on the South edge.

 

Wolf Guard are assigned to both Grey Hunters Packs (both with Power Fist and Combimeltas) and Long Fang Pack 2 (Terminator armor with Cyclone Launcher).

 

The Orks scout-moved the Deffkoptas toward the South Edge.

 

***** Turn 1 *****

(Orks):

- Moved Deffkoptas further south and into firing range of LF-2 & GH-2

- All other units moved forward along two axes of advance, one north of a big hunk of terrain (The Rock) and one South

- Deffkoptas immobilize GH-2's Rhino

- Tank Hunters, mounted in the Battle Wagon (which only moved 6") have no vehicle in range and therefore shoot at LF-2 (no wounds)

 

(Space Wolves):

- Unloaded GH-2 and advance toward Deffkoptas on South board edge

- Move RP & WG in their Rhino around terrain to get a shot at the Ork's Northern contingent (DeffDreads, 'ard Boys, Killer Kans, Big Mek)

- Other units move slightly to not be insta-hit in assault if Snikrot comes in Turn 2

- LF-2 gets a lucky lascannon shot on the Battle Wagon, wrecking it. The Tankbustas bail out and make their pinning check

- LF-2 blasts one of the Deffkoptas, with GH-2 nailing the other

- The RP uses Living Lightning and knocks a Scorcha off of one of the Killer Kans

- Some hits on the 'ard Boys from LF-1 knocks out a couple

 

***** Turn 2 *****

(Orks)

- Snikrot arrives, electing to come in on the West board edge behind LF-1 and GH-1 (mounted in Rhino)

- Declare Wagh!

- Tank Bustas hoof it forward

- Northern and Southern contingents continue to advance, this time running. Remain out of charge range

- Tank Bustas fire at GH-2's immobilized Rhino, shaking it

- Snikrot's Kommandos shoot up LF-1 but cause no casualties

- Snikrot assaults LF-1 and GH-1's Rhino. LF-1 is down to the Pack Leader and a single Lascannon, who run 10" away. GH-1's Rhino loses it's storm bolter. Orks take 2 casualties

 

(Space Wolves):

- LF-1 is far enough away from Snikrot to rally

- RP with his WG escort unload from their Rhino and get a line on Snikrot

- GH-1 unloads from their Rhino and get into position to shoot Snikrot

- GH-2 moves behind cover to support LF-2's position

- Land Raider with Grimar and TWG moves a bit to get a shot on the oncoming Killer Kans/Deff Dreads

- RP hits Snikrot with JotWW but only kills a single Kommando, Snikrot making his Initiative Check

- GH-1 shoots up Snikrot's team, reducing it just a few Orks and him

- LF-2 shakes a Killer Kan and puts more wounds on the 'ard Boyz

- RP/WG and GH-1 assault Snikrot's Kommandos, destroying them without casualties

 

***** Turn 3 *****

(Orks):

- The Northern Ork contingent veers through cover, heading south, to begin a join up with the Southern Contingent.

- Zagstruk and da Vultcha Boyz make a perfect Deep Strike landing by LF-2

- Ensuing fire puts a wound on LF-2, kills the Lascannon in LF-1 and fails to damage the Land Raider

- Zagstruk loses 3 of his Boyz to assault right away and wipes out LF-2 before consolidating to cover the southern flank of the Combined Ork Force

 

(Space Wolves):

- RP & WG bodyguard remount their Rhino, move to get a LOS on some Killer Kans

- Land Raider plows ahead 12", unloading Grimnar and his TWG in striking distance of the Big Mek, 'ard Boyz, a Killer Kan unit and the remaining Tank Hunters

- GH-1 mounts up in their Rhino, which zooms off and pulls in behind the Land Raider

- GH-2 moves out to threaten Zagstruk

- LF-1 (down to the Pack Leader, surely a future Lone Wolf ;) ) gets out of line of sight.

- The RP blows up a Killer Kan with Living Lightning

- GH-2 shoots up da Vulcha Boyz to just Zagstruk

- Land Raider blows up a Killer Kan

- Grimnar & the TWG shoot up the 'ard Boyz with bolter and Heavy Flamer fire, killing 4.

- GH-1 assaults Zagstruk, killing him without suffering casualties before consolidating away from the approaching Boyz mob

- Grimnar and the TWG assault Big Mek, 'ard Boys, a Killer Kan unit and the Tank Hunters (a nice pocket for assault existed), killing the Big Mek, destroying the Tank Hunters and driving the 'ard Boyz back with 10 Boyz remaining. Lose a Wolf Guard Terminator in exchange.

 

***** Turn 4 *****

(Orks):

- Can't rally 'ard Boyz since they are still within 6" of Grimnar and crew, move 10" on rout but could conceivably rally next turn

- A DeffDread moves up to assault the Land Raider while the other DefDread and Killer Kan units cluster around Grimnar and his TWGs

- The Boyz unit closest to the action hesitates since they are not in a good position to assault Grimnar and crew and in trying to do so would be threatened by GH-2. Moves around cover instead

- No effective Ork shooting

- One DeffDread assaults the Land Raider but only causes a Shaken result.

- One DeffDread and 2 Squadrons of 2 Killer Kans assault Grimnar and his TWGs. They manage to kill two of the TWGs (including the one with a Chain Fist before he can strike) but Grimnar takes out a Killer Kan squadron due to Tank Hunters being in effect.

 

(Space Wolves):

- RP/WG drive to a position to put fire on the flanking Boyz unit

- Land Raider to the south 6"

- GH-2 moves up to the Land Raider and boards

- GH-1 moves up in their Rhino to fire at the DefDread not in melee

- RP kills 4 in the flanking Boyz unit while the Rhino's Storm Bolter kills one of the fleeing 'ard Boyz (number now down to less than half)

- Land Raider destroys the DeffDread not in melee with a Multimelta shot

- GH-1's Rhino pops smoke

- Grimnar manages to destroy the remaining DeffDread but takes a wound and loses his last TWG

 

***** Turn 5 *****

(Orks):

- 'ard Boyz can't rally, retreat off the board

- Boyz units retreat to prevent further KPs

- Shooting ineffective

- Grimnar destroys final two Killer Kans but takes a second wound then consolidates behind the wreckage of a DeffDread

 

(Space Wolves):

- Vehicles move to locations with cover

- Grimnar moves to spot out of range/LOS of ork shooting

- RP shoots more Living Lightning into a Boyz unit, killing a couple

- Other Heavy Bolter, Lascannon & Storm Bolter fire into Boyz units causes a few casualties

Roll of a 2 on Turn 5 resolution, ending the Game.

 

Victory - Space Wolves!

Conclusion:

The Space Wolves out-shot, out-melee'd and out-maneuvered the Orks. Granted the Spearhead setup was a major limitation to the (mainly footslogging) Orks getting into favorable position quickly but other than the sneak attack units (Snikrot and Zagstruk) the Wolves chose where and when to engage. Grimnar was a beast! For a 2000 pt Tourney coming soon I'm keeping the same setup but replacing a single Terminator Wolf Guard with Arjak Rockfist. Him and Logan together should be a sight to see!

Good work, and good report, I liked the use of colours and the simple, direct explanation of events

 

Yeah, I thought about using graphics but I know B&C is a bit tight fisted about posting images. I thought that breaking a game down turn by turn, phase by phase was an effective way of doing it. Thanks!

Oh, don't get me wrong, pictures would have been awesome lol

But it's one of the best-non picture reports I've seen cause you just state whats going on instead of flooding it with back story (which while good sometimes, can get confusing without pictures to base it off... especially if someone keeps dropping in and out of narrative)
