Howling
Well last weekend I had the chance of playing two nice 2000 points games against a skilled Dark Angels player (or at least the best one in my store...) and a imperial guard player.... I was using my "allround" list since I don't like to build my army around my enemies.....thus I used this list : 2000 Points Wolfrush. Since writing battle reports takes quite some time for me (remembering all the :) that happened is troublesome...) I'll post the two reports one after the other...starting off with the Battle against the Dark Angels... I don't remember his exact list, but it was something like Azrael (or however the Jetbike guy's name is..), a librarian in TDA who went with a squad of deathwing terminators (2 claws, assault canon, n stuff...), a troop of tactical marines with plasmacanon, two troops of tacticals in rhinos, a veteran unit in a razorback, a ravenwing squad with attack bike (multimelta), a autocanon/heavy bolter predator, and a cybot with...I think Multi Melta...or was it Lascanons? not sure...he never shoot it anyways... We rolled the dices and played annihilation with battle in the morning.... This made my opponent laugh out hard as he didn't have any devastors and I would be forced to move my longfangs around for quite a bit to get some good shoots with them.... Deployment: Since he won the role he decided to go first and placed the tactical squad in a building in the middle of the table, azrael inside of some ruins out of sight, and the ravenwings right in the middle of the field to block off most of the field for my deployment...sneaky bastard!!! Knowing that he was quite the nasty player and not willing to offer him any targets for his ravenwings or plasmacanons I decided to pack my runepriest + flamer greyhunter in rhino as well as rhino with plasmagreyhunters in a building in the middle of the field just as near as I was allowed to go to the ravenwings....and conveniently out of his line of sight... With his infiltration movement he pulled his ravenguard backwards to the rest of his troops...not willing to risk ending up inside my attack or shooting range I guess... Turn 1 DA: He placed a rhino with tacticals on the left flank as well as the predator, added another tactical to the middle, teleported his deathwing to the middle right side and rounded it up with his veterans and cybot on the right flank, all rushing forward to get into the fight.... Since all of my units where out of sight that's all that happened... Turn 1 Wolves: Knowing that my Longfangs desperately needed cover I sent one unit of them into a crater on the right flank and placed the other unit on my left flank, covered by the melta/guard greyhunter rhino which blocked the line of sight of most nasty things....Since my left side still looked a little empty I placed the melta greyhunter rhino there as well, all of them rushing forward of course... With my runepriest and two greyhunter troops in the middle I decided that it was save enough and just added my wolflord + thunderwolf cavalery for a quick charge through the building right into the middle of the frey... On the right flank I added a lone wolf to protect my long fangs and lead the charge, as well as my two units of fenrisian wolves....since his deathwing terminators where near them I decided to use them as a blocking unit to keep them away from my longfangs or lord... I let my runepriest unit march forward inside the building to come into better position and my plasma greyhunters left their rhino as well to take position in the building as well, just within range of the deathwing and the ravenwing... Shooting phase: With the plasma greyhunters being the only unit with some targets in range I fired all they got on the deathwing, killing one claw terminator and taking a wound from the librarian...at this point the dark angel player was sill smiling as he thought this a good result for 4 plasmashoots and 16 bolter rounds.....until... Assault phase: Since my lovely fenrisian wolves where just within range I charged his deathwing with 10 of them....I was pretty sure it was pure suicide but I hoped for them to last at least one round and keep him in close combat until my heavy boys arrived....or where able to shoot.... But dear lord was I wrong....With the fury of the winter wolf they charged the deathwing terminators and slaughtered no less than 3 of them! the look on my opponents face was priceless as he only managed to kill a single wolf in return and lost the fight....but his fearless keept him in battle of course...but just to make it even more humiliating the resulting armor saves killed yet another terminator....leaving only his seargent and the librarian left... Turn 2 DA: Once again charging with everything he had to get within shooting/fighting distance to me the DA Player popped my melta/guard greyhunter rhino with his attackbike (after shaking it with his predator) and charged it with the ravenwing.... on the right side little happened as his razorback and cybot just charged forward... Azrael had taken positioni n the middle of the field right next to the rhino with his tactical in it... Shooting phase: After popping my guard/melta rhino the combined effords of azrael and the plasmacanon tactical troop only managed to kill 3 greyhunters of the plasma squad... Assault phase: As the ravenguard charged my guard/melta greyhunters I failed my countercharge and as a result he killed four of my greyhunters....but not without me taking three of his bikes with me as well...once again his face was priceless as he realized that the squad had a powerfist and energy sword with it (obviously he didn't look at the squad too close before attacking..)...I lost the fight but stayed in the fight bravely... Oh yeah....and just to make it worse....my fenrisian wolves slaughtered his deathwing to the last man...only losing 3 in return...the disbelieve in my enemies eyes was priceless....since that moment my fenrisian wolves where known as "the death wolves" within my store *g* Turn 2 Wolves: My runepriest troop messed up his terrain test and remained within the building, my wolflord + cavalry barged right out of the building in the middle, my fenrisian wolves and lone wolf charged forward to get into cover next to the remaining fenrisian wolves...and on the left flank my melta greyhunters left their rhino hopping to popp his rhino and charging afterwards.... My deathwolves dashed forward next to azrael... Shooting phase: the longfangs on the right flank failed to popp the razorback with their lasercanons but managed to kill two tacticals from the plasma canon tactical, the longfangs on the right side failed to popp the predator (only shaking it) and killed the attack bike with their heavy bolters.... the plasma greyhunters shoot back at the plasmacanon tactical and killed another two of them My melta greyhunters on the left flank completely failed to hurt the rhino and where thus standing in the open like morrons... Assault phase: My wolflord + cavalery charged azrael but miserably failed to kill him, but still reduced him to one wound....while azrael failed to penetrate my belt of russ and high toughness... I didn't charge with my fenrisian wolves as my honour demanded for my lord to slaughter azrael...and the plasma canon tactical squad was out of range hiding in the top floors of the building... On my right flank the lone wolf and fenrisian wolves had nothing valuable to charge, thus remained in cover... And on the left flank I forgot to charge the rhino (which I would later on regret..) leaving only my guard/melta greyhunters in action.... Loosing one of their members to the ravenwing-seargent's powersword they killed two in return, leaving only a normal ravenwing behind... Turn 3 DA: With all his troops within range my opponent declared that this would be "HIS TURN OF REVENGE! *gleaming eyes*" and both his tactical squads left their rhinos as well as his veteran unit... Shooting phase: The first tactical squad fired on my melta greyhunters and killed 3 (ouch..), the second tactical troop fired on my death wolves in the middle, killing two....and the veterans on the right killed another fenrisian wolf of the second unit... His Plasma Canon tacticsl continued to duell with my plasma greyhunters, killing another two... Assault Phase: On the left flank his tactical attacked my melta greyhunters, killing 3 (he had a powerfist with him.) while I only killed one in return....I fleed, lost the role and lost another marine as a result...ouchili.... Oh and of course his remaining ravenwing was killed.... In the middle his tacticals charged my cavalry and death wolves, killing a fenrisian wolf and wounding a cavalery wolf....loosing 6 in return and getting azrael slaughtered by my wolflord...muaha... On the right flank his cybot and tacticals charged my lone wolf and fenrisian wolves....he managed to kill a wolf...but totaly failed to wound my lonewolf both with the majority of his veterans and the cybot...in return my wolves and lone wolf slaughtered ALL of his veterans (my lonewolf alone killed 3...) and as a result he lost the fight and his cybot got immobilized.. Result: At this point my opponent decided that it was no use and he gave up..... It was quite the funny game but I have to admit that my opponent had quite some bad luck, aspecially with his terminators.... But anyways, spacewolves 1, Dark Angels 0! Conclusion: No matter what, I'll always take a unit of fenrisian wolves with me, if only for the fun factor or seeing stuff like them killing a whole unit of deathwing on their own happening... Grey Mage
Well done! Hopefully your opponent thought it was half as fun as you did. ChaosPhoenix
Congrats! But playing vs. Dark Angels is a little too easy at the moment. Regarding your list I see why it works and it seems good (what powers has the runepriest?). It's not the kind of list for me, because it feels like a vanilla marine list. Lots of MEQ bodies with lots of shooties in lots of cars. I don't mean that negative or unfriendly, sorry if it seems that way. It's somehow too standard. But it's made of win. Greyhunters are excellent troops, backed up by fast wolves and Longfangs - it's really a good combo. What did you use for the Fenrisian Wolves? Howling
I think my runepriest used this 5+ cover save and the unlimited range thingi....but since no one ever shoot at his unit he never got to have some use for it...and since his unit totally messed up the terrain checks he hardly did anything..... About the "shooties"...well I see it like that...just because I play space wolves doesn't mean I have to use blood claws...they just aren't worth their points and I prefer to send my greyhunters into close combat instead of some half assed blood claws which are only good if used at the sze of 15 with a wolfpriest to guide them...which is a huge footslogging point sink....I prefer fast moving mech units to get my men into close combat to my own conditions and as fast as possible... Also I used to play alot of lists with like a termi squad in a land raider and just bull rushed with it.....but this got kinda boring over the time so I'm trying something a little different with this list (not much different, but still a little..) I have to admit that this list is build to be competitive (and fluffy to the way I think my lord would field his army..) and I don't like using more than 2 hq units or waste my points on fully equipped terminators or other stuff like that......in my opinion that's what I'll bring in 3000 points games....everything up to 2000 should be "standard well rounded up" ... As for my fenris wolves, I used the fantasy chaos hounds, cut off all the mutation stuff and modified their tails to look more wolfish with some gs....looks kinda nice I think. My Thunderwolves were proxid by some Bikes as my ordered Wolves just don't want to arrive -.- which puts me in some trouble as this saturday a huge apocalypse fight will happen where I wanted to use them......I wonder how my "Njal + Runepriest Circle" idea will work out.....Njal + 4 Runepriests protecting a bridge with Jotww seems kinda funny to me...but I'll see I guess *g* Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/181737-games-ending-on-turn-3-battle-report/#findComment-2151363 Share on other sites
Forseti
I see your list as fluffy, I never really thought of the wolves as a pure assault force..leave that to Blood Angels and World Eaters. Wolves, to me, are more pound the with fire support and lure them where you want them. Grimnar didn't lead the defense of the Cadian Gate because he was headstrong, he did because he(we) are the best at making the enemy fight on our terms. Anyway, good win, always nice to beat the Dress Angels. Howling
Well well...since I have the spare time.....here comes my second battle report with the same list... My enemy was a quite fluffy catachan all infantry army with about 170-200 models in total... I really don't know what his army consisted of as it was waaaay to much for me to bother remembering.....it was something like 2 squads of rocket launchers, a squad of autocanons, a squad heavy bolters, a squad laser canons, many infantry troops with lasercanons, some special melta and flamer weapon troops, a unit of mortars,Straken, a second commander (with artillerie officer), sly marbo, snipers, this heavy bolter seargent....and some big infantry blocks... We roled the dices and it ended up with annihilation and full front line.... I won the who goes first role and obviously decided to do so...(It's never a good idea to let the imperials start...as all of you most likely know...) Deployment: My Runepriest and his flamer greyhunter squad as well as the plasmagun greyhunter squad both took the left flank in their rhinos, the two longfang units as well as the lone wolf took control of the center building in my deployment zone, and the right flank was made up with all the rest of my army, with my melta/guard rhino placed near the center for flexibility... All of my Rhinos where at least partially in cover just for the case that he'd steal my initiative.... In response to my deployment my enemy decided to place most of his anti armor on the left flank (where my runepriest was) as he decided that he needed to stop him, so a lasercanon unit, a autocanon unit, a roketlauncher unit and a troop of infantry as well as his second commando ended up there.... The middle was held by a veteran troop (which infiltrated there..) as well as two special weapon troops, and two units of infantry....all of them having lines of sight to my left flank as well....and a unit of rocketlaunchers on the top of the building to cover his right flank...oh and the mortar units in the back... The right flank was protected by Straken himself as well as a big block of infantry, a heavy bolter unit, two special weapon teams, some snipers...yeah I think that's that... Since he failed to steal my initiative (Sheesh...lucky me there...) Space Wolves Turn 1: Movement: Nothing too big here....all my units except for the long fangs moved forward as fast as they could and popped smoke...my guard/melta unit decided to head for the center, leaving the right flank in good care of my wolflord and his friends.... Shooting Phase: Right Long Fang group oblitered his rocket launcher unit on top of the building, left Long Fang group managed to kill two rocketlaunchers of the left unit...nothing else... No Close Combat as nothing was within range... Catachan Turn 1: Movement: Nothing moved a single inch...except one infantry troop on the left flank which tried to get closer to my rhinos.....how surprising.. Shooting Phase: Aiaiai...this one took like a whole hour or so..... He seemed to fear my rhinos a LOT and thus shoot at them with everything he got while his infantry was shooting at my fenrisian wolf unit, causing them to flee in panic.... no big loss though as the "death wolves" where still with my lord ^^ Anyways...Smoke and some bad roles from his side lead to all but the utmost right of my rhinos to be shaken and thus unable to fire or move...and I think all of them had lost their storm bolters.... But for obvious reasons my enemy wasn't very pleased with that result... No Close Combat... Space Wolves Turn 2: Movement: The Runepriest unit and the guard/melta unit left their rhino to storm forward as much as they could.... the Plasma rhino stayed where it was as I hoped for his attention to stay on my wolves, allowing the Plasma greyhunters to stay save for the time beeing.... the rhino on the right side charged forward, hiding behind a wall to stay out of the countless melta reach... Meanwhile my Lord + cavalry + "deathwolves" charged the first big block of infantry.... Shooting phase: My Long Fangs killed half of the veteran unit while my left long fangs slaughtered a infantry block and killed off the last rocket launcher.... My runepriest + unit nearly slaughtered the infantry block on the left side with their shooting, and the guard/melta troop in the center decided not to shoot at the veterans in order to kill them in close combat and use their massacre movement to take cover afterwards... Close Combat phase: With my Wolflord + cavalry within reach they totally annihilated the big block of infantry and used the massacre movement to duck behind a nearby wall, staying out of sight of about 50+ laserguns + meltas + other stuff..... Since my "deathwolves" had nothing to charge they just moved into better position.... My Guard/Melta unit in the center annihilated the veteran unit without taking any harm and then took cover behind the wall to stay out of the special weapon and infantry blocks line of sight... Catachan Turn 2: Movement: Straken + Special weapon teams prepared to attack my wolflord, big infantry blocks on right side tried to get line of sight to my wolflord but failed mostly... In the center his troops tried to advance within shooting range to my guard/melta greyhunters but messed up their terrain check and remained out of line of sight... On the left everything prepared to shoot at my Runepriest + greyhunters and Sly Marbo appeared right next to them... Shooting phase: Now well...this was where my luck really started to get nasty.... On the right side Straken + his people managed to wound all my cavalry + lord, leaving all cavalry with only 1 wound and my lord with 2....luckily his big infantry blocks hardly got any lines of sight... His Snipers on the right side targeted my Lone Wolf and caused a wound on him... In the center nothing had any line of sight to my guard/melta unit and thus nothing shoot... On the left side he shoot everything he had on my still full rhino and the runepriest+greyhunter unit...including sly marbos explosive... My rhino ended up immobilized.....but thanks to my cover saves (the runepriest + greyhunters where within a crater) only two of them died from the hailstorm of lasbolts n explosives n stuff.... Close Combat: At this time my enemy decided to go the catachan way and attack my Wolflord with Straken + friends.....well...what to say? My wolflord took two of Strakens three wounds in a 1 vs 1 while my cavalry slaughtered all of his troops without taking any wounds.....toughness 5 against strength 3 was just too much for him.....and my thunderhammer cavalry dealing the deathblow to Strakenwith the one hit I placed on him... Result: With Straken killed and my wolflord straight within his right flank, my guard/melta greyhunters + lonewolf in the center, my nearly unharmed runepriest + greyhunters on the left, and two completely unharmed units of greyhunters still waiting in my rhinos as well as two nearly unharmed (1 guard died..) longfangs...my enemy decided that he just had no more chance and gave up, shaking hands for the good game... Impressions: Oh well...another Quick slaughter with alot of luck on my side there....I really hope some of my future games will be a little harder for me as I get this "As soon as I reach my enemy (which most of the time is turn 2...) he's dead meat..." feeling at the moment... As for the fun factor, we both had alot of fun and are planning to join forces in the upcomming 750 points team match (750+750 vs 750+750) as we look forward to the result of that ^^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/181737-games-ending-on-turn-3-battle-report/#findComment-2151456 Share on other sites
Simo429
this battle report has seriously depressed me because I know how much time its going to take to get my army painted to the standard where im comfortable taking it onto the battlefield Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/181737-games-ending-on-turn-3-battle-report/#findComment-2151468 Share on other sites
Howling
Huh? How did my battle report manage to do that? Because I am using so "many" grey wolves? It's not like you HAVE to use a list like that or as if it's the best list out there or anything like it.... Or what exactly do you mean?
