terminator icons

hello brothers,

i want to make a small terminator squad as a side project. i was wondering what icon you guys would recommend for them?

i was thikning about letting 2 keep their powerweapons, adding 2 powerfists and giving one a pair of lightning claws and making him a champion. not sure on what ranged weapons i want to give them but a combi-melta and autocannon are probably going to be amongst them.

i figured that an icon who boosts their survivability would be preferable sseeing as they are already capable of dealing out a great deal of pain  but the question is which one....

the better invunerable save from tzeentch or the extra toughness from nurgle?

My advice is to try both out first before settling on one, however, you may find that neither icon is truly worth it's price tag outside of Apocalypse. The same goes for the Reaper.

I'd use IoCG if I planned on having a character joining my terminators, otherwise they will be without an icon.

If you're planning on using Tzeentch or Nurgle, I feel you'd have to consider using a 10 man squad. This is enough protection to make sure the Icon Bearer isn't killed too early and you lose your bonus.

Having said that, a 10 man squad with either Icon and the minimum of upgrades (2 Heavy Flamers, 2 Fists) would be 350-400 points, so you really have to have a great plan for them.

For smaller squads, like 5 guys in a Land Raider, I think Icon of Slaanesh is the best. Those squads only need 1 Fist and now all the Power Weapons are striking at I5. Plus the icon is only 1/2 the price of a Terminator so its not a huge point sink. Something like this:

5 Terminators, Power Fist, Heavy Flamer, Icon of Slaaneshi = 180 points + Land Raider.

Its not a super competitive build, but it does fairly well especially in games with alot of MEQs.

no icons? is there a reason for this?

Most players seem to use terminators as a cheap, small anti-tank deep strike attack. If that is the plan, any icons are a waste of points.

And other uses of Terminators often require land radiers to work, forcing small squads, making the icons too expensive to bother.

Icon of Glory just if you use multiple units of terminators, and one unit happens to survive until next turn to prevent any coming terminators from scattering as the previous unit will be in a much better position by then. Also if you use daemons, or manage to get a really bad leadership roll.

But, again, larger units for icons is suggested. If you put terminators in front of other units where they wont get 4+ cover saves(like a 4+ Inv tzeentch icon) then I can say the tzeentch icon is ok, in a squad of 8-10.

Khorne icon if you are melee based, and normally out of a raider. Even then, they contest a unit of 9 berzerkers with a chaos lord/sorcerer with them out of a raider for the role. Terminators are a great way to get elite land raiders though, if you don't get dawn of war you can deep strike the terminators while deploying the land raider normally. (Squads must arrive on table if they are in a dawn of war scenario with their transport, cant deep strike as a result if taking a raider with them - which I find odd)

But, if you run 3 models, you will only suffer 1 or 2 leadership checks at most, where you won't have to worry about the result in many situations when it comes to that.

no icons for termintors ever.

Your opinion :)

I personally run a unit of 7 Nurgle Terminators, and they've done great. But, if you don't play with a fixed group of people, don't take anything like that (unless you want to surprise your opponents by taking something nobody else does).

In my most competitve mode, I'd hate to agree.. no icons. Again, not very 'chaosy' but, no icons. Just too easy to lose, too little return on investment.

BUT in most cases I do try to get the squad to a minimum of 5 men before I give an icon. I don't know why but something about having a 4+ save makes all the difference for me. I can't roll 5's for the life of me, but 4's seem to be that breaking point. :) So I take a Tzeentch Icon once in a while for fun.

Another load out I have is take a hand to hand character, and add dual claw termies, make them all champions! Drop in an icon of Khorne and you have these guys roll out of a landraider. Yes, it is a zillion points, but it is really fun to try once in a while.
