Russ... dead?

intresting isnt it we found his armour ,his helm ,his spear and his last words

the question is who was he speaking to (clearly a space wolf)and if said chap reported the words who made the naughty choice to tell fibs

We have his armour? I don't remember reading that. He better not be dead...

I just had to make sure I wasn't seeing things.

Codex: Space Wolves, page 49 (under Bjorn the Fell-Handed)

It was Leman Russ himself who gave Bjorn the epithet that he bears to this day. Then, one unforgettable and tragic day, the Primarch stepped atop the vast banqueting table in the Great Hall and, after a long and uncomfortable silence, announced his intention to leave for the Eye of Terror. He took his retinue with him, leaving only Bjorn behind to watch over his Chapter...

...

From the day of Russ' disappearance...

His last words say that he is dying but he will be back when the chapter is dying, at the wolftime.

So this was before he dissappeared. But he syas he can come back from the dead. Zombie Russ

Those last words are awesome, evocative, stirring and old. I think I first read them in the 90s maybe. The fact that GW proliferates the Russ sojourn into the Eye of Terror and keeps printing those leads me to believe that those words were spoken in the Eye of Terror itself, and possibly retrieved in a memorandum or recording. I would also expect that no corpse was found and no sign that Russ was indeed correct about his imminent demise.

Either way, he'll be back, unlooked for and unexpected and manner of his coming shall be splendid.

Well if you look at Space Wolves fluff (particulary in the 13th company) the wulfen gene will often activate to prevent physical corruption. This is most likely what happened to Russ, thus explaining why we have his armour and weapons and such, he doesnt need them anymore cause hes probably in full wulfen state. (Full Wulfen Primarch...ouch)

And Bjorn the Fell-handed is just crazy.

It's not very clear-cut, but while I was reading our new codex, I noticed something. On the bottom of page 88, there's a blurb describing how Russ fought the mythical wolf Morkai and his lieutenants. What I find interesting, pertaining to Russ's last words, is the following:

The most terrible of all was Blackmane, a terrifying giant with midnight-black fur also known as the Howler of the Night, whose long keening calls the dead from their graves. Russ fought the Blackmane and slew him, making his pelt into a magic cloak that allowed him to pass beyond the gates of death.

Of course, this text probably stems from old Fenrisian legends and folk-tales, but I do find it interesting that the text subtly suggests that Russ really does have the means to return to us at the Wolftime.

Page 28 of the codex, in the Long Fang section.

Russ' Last words. From what I'm reading it looks very interesting.

originally from 2nd edition codex, its not something new

Well thank you for informing me this was indeed from the second edition codex. Unfortunately I haven't been in the hobby long enough to have a copy of the 2nd ed codex but I'm working on acquiring it. It just confused me that this was the first reference (for me at least) to Russ "drawing his last breaths"

Personally I think that the Full wulfen is probably the best bet, but we have no way of knowing regardless. Keep in mind they say Rowboat is healing in his little playskool golden throne and for all we know Khan has been beating back S&M enthusiests for the past 10,000 years or so. The fluff likes to keep that glimmer of 'they could be dead, but maybe not' around. Originally it was probably to encourage people to think of new things, now its just something to let us speculate over and ponder.

Still.... Think about Russ as a chaos-resistant superclawed killing machine of death and killing.

We all know that GW can ever being the Primarchs back, because it would be the end of 40K.

And if 1 Primarch returns, everyone will want their Primarch to return as well.

Russ left with his wolfguard and travelled into the eye of terror.

He could be commanding the 13th company for all we know.
