Capt. Crisostomo of the Ultramarines

Alright, it's been roughly one year since I got into this hobby. (Hmmm... maybe more, anybody know when AoBR came out?)

One year's more than enough time to learn the basics so it's about time I stop acting like a noob and contribute to the forums.

I've decided to start with something small, just a Captain with a relic blade and SS. Just to get the hang of WIPing.=)

So let's get to it, here's Capt. Valourian Crisostomo, Ultramarines 2nd Company:

(I really should've taken pics before I primed. The idea to start a WIP came to me while I was already basecoating -> Regal Blue)

As you can see, he's an Emperor's Champion. I chose the mini because it seemed like the easiest conversion.

I cut off the left hand, hollowed out the wrist with a dremel, put two 1/16" magnets in there, and covered it with green stuff.

This was a fairly frustrating conversion for me as it was my first time working with GS. Lesson learned: let it cure for a while before using it.

Backpack's pretty straightforward: Commander BP w/ Iron Halo and a purity seal.

I found the SS from the Assault Squad Sprue quite plain. So I took a servo skull from the Devastators, cut off the back of the cranium and glued it on the shield. Now, IMHO, it looks like it can actually produce a force field of some sort. After that, I VERY carefully hollowed it out with a dremel, put two magnets (in series, duh) in it and covered it with GS.

You could be wondering why I didn't magnetize the right arm or hand. It's because it believe there's only three worthwhile options on a Captain: PWs, LCs and of course RB's. I'd never give up the I 5 for a PF. Of the three, the RB is definitely the most killy so pinned it goes. If I want the extra attack from a PW+Pistol, i can swap the SS. I'm still thinking of what color the engraving will be. I'm open to suggestions, but I'll decide one I finish the body. I don't want to pick a color that'll distract the viewer from the model itself.

If it doesn't snow tomorrow, I'll try to take update pics using natural daylight.

C&C very much welcome.

Very sharp of you Commander Sha'son. You wouldn't happen to be Filipino now would you?=)

Hmmm, ironic. The reason why I chose the servo skull was to have something that looks like it can project a force field. But I see your point why it'd be better if there wasn't any bionics in the right eyesocket. Well anyway, it's magnetized so if it does bother me in the future, it's an easy fix. Your tip's duly noted.

Cheers.

Alright... I'm tired. After 2 layers of edge HL's I feel like my eyes are going to cross. I have a newfound respect for those who WIP regularly.

Ok, progress:

I added a couple more layers of paint until I got a solid basecoat, not the purplish kind of blue seen above. Same with the sword arm, shield and power plant.

I then blended a mix of 50:50 Regal Blue-UM Blue to the basecoat and blacklined all the recesses with 50:50 Regal Blue-Chaos Black. Note the little holes in the helmet is darker now.

I then followed this up with 2 layers of edge highlights: UM Blue and 50:50 UM Blue-SW Grey:

Right now, I still haven't decided on what the color of the rivets will be. It's either metal or gold, but I'm leaning a bit on the gold as it is integral to the 2nd Co color scheme. Anybody out there can make an argument for metal (based on the principles of color theory), drop me a message.

I'm taking tomorrow off... will work on this on the weekend, but as always C&C is very much appreciated.

Have a good one guys.
