How Are You Guys Building Your Wolf Lords?

Prototype

Recommended Posts

After much reading through the forums in the past few days, I haven't quite decided what to give my Wolf Lord equipment-wise so I thought I'd ask you guys what you are all taking.

I'm a little inclined towards something like Frost Blade + Belt of Russ personally, since giving him a TH or PF seems to be a waste of his superior initiative.

Thanks

Very Carefully!

But seriously, the main build I keep seeing crop up is Frost Blade + Combi-weapon + Runic Armor + Belt of Russ + Wolf tooth necklace and Saga of the Warrior. Variations of that sell for around 190 pts.

There are those advocating a Thuderwolf mount and another CC weapon + the Frost Blade in order to pick up the extra attack. The Thunderwolf rider version is a melee beast with six STR 6 attacks standard. Though you will not get the uber Rending with any attacks made by special close combat weapons. The thunderwolf also locks him into only joining wolf packs and cavalry, which is not so bad.

Personally, I'm going with something that can run screaming out of a Drop Pod/Crusader/Rhino with a squad of Grey Hunters or Wolf Guard. To each his own, though.

I'm mainly running a Logan Grimnar "counts-as" but if not I prefer:

Wolf Lord

-Belt of Russ

-Frost Blade

-Storm Bolter (Although sometimes I switch this to Combi-Melta/Combi-Flamer depending on the way I feel that day.)

-Wolf Tail Talisman

-Saga of Majesty.

^

Hits decently in close combat, has some ranged capability, adds some anti-psyker protection to a squad and himself, and can lend a hand with a re-roll to morale. Basically he's an all around guy who bolsters the unit he joins.

I have two right now keep in mind though i tend to play at 2000 pts and don't take both in the same list unless i am playing at 2.5k + prefer to add a rune priest etc.

Wolf Lord 1

-Thunder Wolf Mount

-Wolf Claw

-Storm Shield

-Wolf Tail Talisman (sometimes)

-saga of the bear (depending)

Wolf Lord 2

-Space marine bike

-Frost Axe

-Belt of Russ

-Wolf Tail Talisman (sometimes)

-saga of the bear (depending again)

That combo will cost you a lot more than 190 .... more like 225.

That being said I like to keep them under 200. I run something similar. Frost axe, belt of russ, sage of the warrior born, wolf tail which costs ... drumrolll ... 190! ;)

There's really no one way to build a wolf lord. Before you do, decide where you want to put him and what role he's going to play in that squad or your army. Mine goes with some GHs in a rhino or land raider and is used mainly to clean out troops.

If you've got some thuderwolves in your army, it makes sense to give him one too.

If you want a MC/walker/IC killer, termi armor, thunder hammer, storm shield are your thing ... along with a squad of wolf guard.

If you're looking for someone to command from the backlines ... get some DH allies or some other kind of blue armored pansy ... :P :D

Overall though, try to spend less than 25% of the army on HQs. I've managed to fit three in my 1700/1850 lists (Rune priest/chooser + wolf priest) and each has his own role in the army. Nothings stopping your from taking two heavy hitter though. More than 25% though and it starts to eat into your other "essentials" like scoring unts and specialized troops.

yeti pretty much said it. decide on what you want your character to do and give him everything you can to make him good at what he does

Bolded font for point, but the rest of the post is spot on. ;)

My Wolf lord is 220pts and has:

Thunder Wolf Mount

Frost Blade

Storm Shield

Runic Armor

I run him with one Thunder Wolf Calvary Model at 110pts with:

Thunder Hammer

Storm Shield

They are a nasty pair together. S6 I5 A5 Power Weapon and a S10 A4 thunder hammer
