Well I figured because I still need to finish the base I should post him here. As soon as I can get some decent grays it should be done. Anyway, first really serious effort and looking for advice. Meant to be a Black Consul in an urban environment.

Again, looking on advice. I know it's not that great but then again I'm still learning.

For your first real effort I think its very good!! It is much neater than the standard 'first effort'.

The problem I have with 'camo' models is there are almost always obvious giveaways such as the red piping etc. Make sure you paint something through the visor slot so he's not just wearing a blind-fold.

I think the basics will always apply to beginners (which I would say still includes me)- thin your paints a little, small amounts on your brush, wash for easy low lights and a bit of drybrush/highlighting will make a model look reasonable.

Make sure your base explains why he has such camo. I've always loved scout snipers peering over low-walls/around corners etc.

Keep us updated on any progress.

Working on him again tonight. Its amazing because it took me about 4 weeks to sit down and work on his arms. Just after posting I put some basing sand on him, following the instructions of one of the guides here (almost) to the letter. Only issue was I saw after the glue had almost all dried that you want to put big stuff first if you want to do and urban bit, like just the rubble and junk. So I kicked myself in the head and figured I can do a quick change to him being on some sort of barren planet. That way I still get the same colors, the camo-cloak still (to a degree) would blend in and everyone would be happy. Also works as the sand had a nasty habit of sticking to his boots.

So I have the first layer of that on now, starting with a white wash down and from there I have no idea. I was thinking about working my way towards black with a few grays and then do another lighter gray over the black. I'm not sure on it, but would the who deluded paint/wash bit be good in this case? It looks like it from the white, but not sure for the other colors.

As for the visor I am in total agreement. I had a thin bit of green in there but it looks like it didn't show out to well. Just redid it in red, hopefully this shows up better in the next set of pictures.

he seems to be looking the wrong way.

+1.

Due to his arms and gun position, he should be looking in the sights ready to head shot first passing by enemy rather than looking backwards. Unless he's just being surprised by a nearby enemy trying to sneak in his back. But in this case, you may represent it on the basing.

I also agrees with Brother Loring about his blind look.

Nice paint job, by the way.

I agree he is looking the wrong way. I attribute it to the "not looking right" rule though. The orignal head I had would have him looking down the sights but it disapeared, probably under my desk. As I have no pins, putty, or anything else to hold his head in place I did the best I could and he didn't look right with that particular head turned that way. I guess it's the price of laziness, as I didn't ant to deal with one of the goggled heads at the time. Sad part is I can't take the head off due to the glue.

How would I represent him noticing a baddy coming up from behind on his base? I know for this one its a little to late (or so it seems, got the sand down already), but for future note it would be nice to have some more ideas.

Anyway I'll be finishing up the base on this one and posting pictures in the near future. Nothing spectacular on it, but the other ones in the squad should be better represented.

EDIT: As I'm not a fan of double posting here is a short update and the pictures I promised. Not only did I finish the base of the first scout but I started in on two more last night at work. I got one almost up to the point the one I finished tonight was at when I first posted and the other I had started but decided to swap to the one I'm almost done with. All that is missing is the head and base. I was working with some sprues to try and make up some sort of bulk wrekage, maybe from a building or something and add it in. No final plans for it yet though, up for suggestions as I think for play factor all that matters is the model itself to be painted.

And now for the (bad) pictures I took:
