H.C.118
Hello, I recently won an engineer on a mechanical steed for empire, and I want to use it as a techmarine that is on a bike. I also have the bits to convert it to a MOTF with a conversion beam (represented by green stuff and a heavy destroyer gun from the necrons) or with other weapons. what do you suggest? Deus de Mortalis
I haven't used one, but it is pretty obvious that he is fragile against shooting, and even worse off in assault. Just over half the time his shot will not scatter. I think it depends on what kind of boards you are playing on, an open field or with terrain in the middle. If all you are able to shoot is the S8 AP4 shot, the MOTF is a waste of points. He could be good against guard tanks but I don't think he could do too well vs a fast, deepstrike, or drop pod army as it shouldn't be hard to close within 42," keep them in cover, or out of LOS. Of course he can hide behind cover and pop out of it to shoot, or come in from reserve and shoot. Being so fragile and with range being a big issue, I really think there are better options in your army for 155pts. Sanctjud
When I finish building my army, I have plans for the following unit in a 2000 list: Khan Chaplain on bike 8 Bikers, 2 meltas, Fist, Hvy Bolter Attack Bike. 2 Techmarines, full harness, bike, power weapon. Techmarines are buried in a big fearless unit. They can hit and run, speed, toughness to be delivered where they need to be to make use of their weapons, but most likely they will charge into combat. In combat he's got 4 Str 5 I 5 power weapon attacks and 2 str 9 fist attacks, times two. Throwing in more str 5 power weapon attacks from the other 2 ICs, then the biker fist, and their str 5 attacks... Something like that. The Techmarine is pretty fragile with only 1 wound, but you pay a premium to get pretty much the offensive shooty and combatty of roughly a tactical squad in one package. My 7 Cents. FabulousRex
I agree that a C.Beamer Master of the Forge is fairly wasteful in any non-Apoc-level games (though having several mobile long-range S10 shooters is awesome at that level...YMMV). I think just giving him a Bike and a Poweraxe is more than enough to let him support your force well. His standard kit is quite impressive if you think about it: 2PF attacks, a Flamer and a PP that can both be fired at once, and that PW gives him 3-4 armor ignoring attacks on top of it all. His gear is more for close support, and having a guy like that in a Bike Squad can seriously upgrade their killing power. Hell, give him and the Sgt of your squad Combi-flamers, and you can drop 5 flamers in one turn from a fast-moving Bike squad that can potentially be a Troops choice as well. If you use TacSqds primarily, he can follow a unit and patch their ride up if need be 50% of the time. When your boys jump out, you have the option of joining him to the squad in case there are high-STR attacks floating around looking to insta-gib your HQ (their usually are). Or you can keep them apart so that he can go bully enemy support units like Lootas, Sentinels, Devs/Havocs, etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/181966-biked-techmarine/#findComment-2154911 Share on other sites
chapter master 454
The conversion beamer in my experience (a foot-slogger too, -mimics crowd gasp- someone who doesn't mount them on bikes) is actually very good. The worst your going to scatter at all is 8" and on average you will only scatter 2", as long as you keep the enemy at over 18" you can hit them with the strength 8 shot. A key tactic: if you have a multi-story ruin put him in there on the top floor if it has good LoS and then put a squad of the bottom floor or second floor to do close range support. If you go by building rules find a window or parapet and just rare hell down upon him by taking out his ranged tank poppers and you can just rain those shots down (since they can't shoot him in a building!) H.C.118
Thanks everyone, so I'll be using him as: MOTC Con.Beamer Bike I do believe that it is worth 155 pts or Techmarine Sevo Harness (or not) Power Weapon Bike 125 pts with Harness So what do you think? FabulousRex
It would really depend on the rest of your force if you're wanting it for effectiveness. Either will work great if you like the look, Techmarines on bikes are the bee's knees when done well. Though personally speaking, a regular Techie on a bike works best with only a Servoharness. The extra 2-3 power weapon attacks you get aren't what you're looking for with this unit. A fast-moving Flamer with 2PF attacks on a T5 2+sv model are really what makes him good. He helps add killing power to Bike Squads that usually need a bit more Cowbell. He also helps escort Attack Bike units around quite nicely if you're not using them suicidally like most players do. The MotF can do the same job, but with him it's actually good to shell out for the PW, due to his slightly better profile. The C.Beamer on a bike actually does work fairly well in a mobile firepower+assault army (Water Element). IE: lots of Dreadnaughts, of which the MotF gives you more, and Razorback'd TacSqds as Troops. In such an army, you have constant movement to help the MotF get the best shots he can, with multiple mobile Firepower/Assault units responding to the enemy's tactics as needed. H.C.118
I see your point, but I was just going to use the std. Techmarine for Tank Repair, otherwise supporting the large amount of tanks I usually field Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/181966-biked-techmarine/#findComment-2156262 Share on other sites
