Deathwolf and Krakendoom

Hail Brothers!

 

I come from the realm of obscurity to ask this humble conclave but a few questions.

 

I am an avid wh40k modeler and painter. I have little to no time to play given that I work in the wireless sales industry and that keeps me very busy :(.

 

I have picked up a ton of the new space wolf models, (7 packs worth and 2 boxes of TDA wolves). I also have a ton of other bits such as jump packs, command bits, etc.

 

I was reading the fluff of the wolves and have found myself torn between Harald Deathwolf and Krakendoom.

 

Both Wolf Lords seem imposing and each has their own allure. I like to think of Harald as a grizzled veteran almost more wolf than man sometimes. I see him either ridding his wolf to battle or having it run beside him while striding to war in TDA with twin THammers. His wolf pelt and talisman adorned armor rough and hewn from countless battles. I see him as quiet and brooding but indomitable in war (either saga of the bear or warrior). I also see him and his wolf guard as a more feral bunch, grim and brooding. Not much unlike Morkai, but less clean in death. Harald and his battle brothers would be the type to revel in the hunt and the kill.

 

I see Krakendoom as almost a more Grecian hero. I see him standing taller than most other marines (even space wolves). I also see him carrying standard issue weapons such as bolters, storm bolters, plasma pistols and power weapons. I see him as the most 'codex' marine of the other wolves, in the idea that he is gallant, brave and demanding but trusting in his weapons and armor and being much more regimented than the other wolves. (as a captain he must run a tight and ordered ship). I see him as a methodical, almost regimented warrior, using his fury to direct his energy the best way possible instead of his other brothers who just unleash hell. I imagine him in Runic Armor, and a bolter on his hip. I see him carrying either a huge frost axe or frost sword, and carrying a storm shield. I also see him with close shaved hair and a helmet at his side. He would have the saga of Majesty and I could see him being incredibly objective driven.

 

Which units would each favor and what types of weapons do you think they would employ?

 

I love both company symbols and would try to think of ways of easily painting or modeling them on to my company marines with gs or painting it on.

 

I would love feedback on both model ideas and if my interpretations seem accurate at all. Comments and Criticism welcome. As I said I will be painting and modeling to enjoy that aspect I doubt I will get to play much.

I definitely prefer Deathwolf, yes sir. The wolf-centric army that he offers up is pretty fresh and new, and I welcome it.

 

plus, you can bring Canis along without wondering how he got into Ragnar's company or whatever.

Krakendoom is my chosen lord and I agree with most of your appraisal of him.

 

I don't think of him personally as being too codex-oriented though. I think given the penchant for oceanic combat the mechanised assault he's said to favour would consist of mainly rhinos purely as a transportation method for delivering a ton of very individual corsair/reaver style space wolves, rather than a tactical spearhead. I imagine The Kraken striding around in the middle of the subsequent melee, being very distinct and ornate (runic armour is a good choice) and visible to his troops to inspire them. Saga of majesty of course fits with this rather well.

 

Personally I plan to model him something like a taller, more ornate armoured space marine, with a particular distinctive aspect I've got in mind, and I'm going to favour round storm shields and close combat weapons throughout the wolf guard attached to him.

 

The rhinos are going to be individual "ships" with shields and iconography (maybe trailing banners or even mock rigging) and captained by a wolf guard with his own personal banner bearer.
