WolfLordLars
Gear your GH packs based on their intended role. I have ran all plasma packs with the old codex.. and I will definately do so now. With two plasma rifles, a plasma pistol, etc. But, they are designed to drop in, shoot, and probably die. Its that simple. Normally I would say run the fist with the GH, but 2 attacks on the WG makes me reconsider. If not adding a WG, they will have a fist. Just in case. Godhead
GH are meant to take down vehicles or basic troops, a task they accomplish well, but taking on MCs is a job for the Lone Wolves or Thunderwolves. Indeed but you have to acknowledge that sometimes you don't direct the battle, though if you have a sound sense of tactics monstrous creatures should have been engaged at range or with a unit capable of holding, eg wolf guard. Err, with two plasma guns, Grey Hunters ARE the unit to be engaging Monstrous Creatures with at range. Two shots at 24 inches? Statistically one will hit and then that has to wound, against a Carnifex that's a four needed, sure no save but again a 50/50 chance. That fex gets within 12 inches and you have to kill it. Say two hit (more likely three methinks) then again you have to wound. So one or two wounds, and a still fully functioning carnifex. Obviously bolter CAN down a fex but you have to roll well. Long Range firepower is helpful but nothing substitutes putting something in each pack capable of dealing the pain to something big and nasty. How is two shots at 24" and 4 shots at 12" that much worse off than a 2 attack pfist on a normal GH with the charge/counter and then a single attack from there out (or 3 attacks on the charge/counter and then 2 from there out for the WPL) vs a multiple wound MC? If you only hit said MC on a 4 (could be worse) then its still a 50/50 chance to hit it all the while attacking at int 1. You can always add a pp pistol for less than the cost of a fist and at 12inches have 5 plas shots into said MC. Tell me that doesn't provide significant threat. Put a Lone wolf in a counter charge role and I think you've got tons more bang for your buck. Hfran Morkai
A powerfist doesn't have a chance of killing it's wielder. Plasma is dangerous if you're anything like me. Wispy
If I'm in the position to rapidfire an MC with mass plasma, I'm going to. When that happens, I'm also usually in the position to charge it with something awesome. Redbaron997
I run 4 squads of GHs as such: 2x 9 GHs (Melta Gun, Rhino, WS, WG with PF) and 10x GH (x2 Melta Gun, Rhino, WS) I dont think I need to invest in the PFs for my plasma squads as that is not thier mission, I have my HQ, WG, LRR unit for big things, and my 2 Melta/PF squads to cover loose ends. So if you think the points are better invested elsewhere and the unit as meant as a support unit you do not NEED it, If you do choose to take one, take the WG and make it an assault unit. Kenmichi
The big thing with power fists in plasma gun packs is they can't shoot then assault. I know those models can still pull out bolt pistols, shoot, then charge but that isn't the role plasma gun packs should be playing. With plasma gun range and coupled with the fact that they can rapid fire you should be using those units to support your assaulting units. In my army I have 6 GH packs organized, 2 support packs, 2 assaulting packs, and 2 tank hunting/support packs. I have 3 power fists in my GH packs, 2 in my tank hunting packs and 1 in an assault pack which doesn't include my WGs. If each pack moves so that they can support each other my plasma gun packs should never have to worry about being assaulted. Even on the off chance they do take an assault, they're still looking at 20-30 attacks.
