DV8
But nothing that specifies that he becomes a member of that pack for "ALL intents and purposes" as was said. Its iffy I think. Previous editions, WG in a pack become a troop choice, even if the last man standing. I am content to go with that, but dont mistake whats in print for statements like that. But if not that, then what else could they possibly mean? Consider that GW has not specified to what extent he is "a part" of the pack or not, so we have two possible solutions to go on, and I say two because GW has not clarified any specific details, it is an either-or situation. He either is split off and is a member of the new pack, or he is not. He is a member of the pack (during/after deployment), or he is not a member of the pack (again, during/after deployment). Now before I continue I say during/after deployment because we are specifically referring to the sequence of splitting off, and the game itself. During the army list writing phase, he is a member of the original Wolf Guard Pack (thus potentially counting towards the 5/10 members required for heavy weapons, and ineligible to qualify as the "10th member" of a Grey Hunter Pack for the second special weapon. I think we can agree on that. So during and after deployment, you have two potential instances, and the arguments beneath. He is a member of the pack Joined in a similar manner to Independent Characters, but as he is not an Independent Character himself, he can never leave it. Confers his leadership bonus. Counts as a member for scoring, even if he is the last man alive. The unit can deploy in a dedicated transport during deployment, and in fact can deploy in the same transport as the unit. As a member of the unit, he cannot be singled out via shooting or combat (except by the overlap of excess wounds, or via certain special rules re: Vindicare Assassins, Mind War, Jaws of the World Wolf, etc.) Must remain within 2" of the unit he is a member of. Must shoot at the same target as the unit, unless some special rule otherwise specifies (re: Long Fangs split fire) He is not a member of the pack Joined in a similar manner to Independent Characters, but as he is not an Independent Character himself, he can never leave it. Does not confer his leadership bonus. Does not count as a member for scoring if he is the last man alive. The unit cannot deploy in a dedicated transport during deployment, and in fact cannot deploy in the same transport as the unit (and vice versa). As he cannot ever leave the unit, said unit cannot ever embark into any transport at any point in time (even during deployment) As he is not a member of the unit, he can be singled out via shooting and combat. Need not shoot at the same target as the unit. Now if he is not a member of the pack, several issues arise. The Wolf Guard Pack Leader rule specifies that he is split off from his original pack. I read that to mean "no longer a part of". Now, if he is not a member of the unit he joins, then what else can he be but a unit unto himself? If he joins a pack, but is not a member, and thus you have a situation of "two units, one pack", that unit cannot enter any transports (he is not an independent character, and no transport can carry more than 1 unit + independent characters at any given time). You see my point here? While the rule does not state explicitly "for all intents and purposes", I'm fairly certain the intent is clear, given the lack of specific "cans" and "can'ts", that once assigned to a pack, he remains with them and functions as another member of the pack for the rest of the game. Thus, a member of the pack "for all intents and purposes" where members of that pack are concerned.
