nurglespuss
Hi all, well I've been progressing this through the WIP forum, but haven't had a lot of useful feedback :D lately. Here is the original conversion: http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs274.snc1/10123_296746375322_633810322_8949316_3406388_n.jpg And after changing that weird arm: http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs274.snc1/10123_296804475322_633810322_8950500_1082008_n.jpg Basecoat: http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs255.snc1/10233_297803490322_633810322_8967777_5277146_n.jpg Finding a grey I liked (after a few test models): http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs275.snc1/10233_297803495322_633810322_8967778_976380_n.jpg Gingery goodness: http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs234.snc1/8117_298173745322_633810322_8972579_8060011_n.jpg First time frost axe: http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs245.snc1/9232_298805525322_633810322_8981718_3771415_n.jpg Insignias (Gunnar Red Moon): http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs265.snc1/9232_300036050322_633810322_8995553_3813112_n.jpg the paint was still wet!! : http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs245.snc1/9232_305285810322_633810322_9070512_7208110_n.jpg http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs245.snc1/9232_305285815322_633810322_9070513_3197740_n.jpg http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs265.snc1/9232_305285825322_633810322_9070514_6021969_n.jpg http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs265.snc1/9232_305285830322_633810322_9070515_3550232_n.jpg Now I just have to get his back pack and cloak done, along with more weathering and distressing :P I'm thinking of a desert base for this one, with dried brown grass?? Brother Santios
Extremely impressive miniature you have crafted there :D I'd go for a tundra look to really show the it off in stark contrast .. thats just me tho i'm a contrast junkie haha Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/182419-thunderwolf-lion-rider-pics/#findComment-2157874 Share on other sites
Wispy
It's a very impressive picture of a Space Wolf riding... a lion. The painting is really well done, but with a lot of these lion conversions, I'm just not seeing the wolf in them. Vlk
overall, it looks great but as wispy had said - it's a lion. Try and make him a long wolfish snout, give him a proper tail (this is definitely not a wolf's tail) and add more fur (I don't like those bald spots). nurglespuss
Hi Guys B) I should have clarified, he is riding a lion, that follows thinderwolf rules ;) thanks. (Back story for this - in short - Calibanite Lion taken as a trophy from a rebel DA commander during a campaign to release a system (read fallen - wuthout SW knowing about them) Lion now ridden as a snub to DA. I really like the lion model, and as yet, had had no opportunity to use it (I detest high elves), when the new codex came out, I saw my opportunity. Those arent 'bald' patches by the way :) thats a fur trim (diff colour/style) surrounding the rear armour :) Thanks again. Corver
I like it, as said for a lion. I also like the story. One of my bikers has a 'borrowed' ravenwing bike for the same reason. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/182419-thunderwolf-lion-rider-pics/#findComment-2157958 Share on other sites
Tsuro
This is a pretty good model, I like how you've included the lion-head on his shoulder pad to suggest theres a reason this Space Wolf is riding a lion. You've done an excellent job with the painting. For me, the lion mount and the frost blade are standouts (I really like the blade head). I would, however, seriously consider repainting the rear armour in an alternate colour. It's very close to the lion's skin and does look odd. The desert base is a good idea, and may make the lion look more "at home" If you were doing the model again I would have the following sugestions: The side armour is too elvish, and worse doesn't look like anything else in the army. A slight reshaping, possibly a raised edge and obviously some wolfish surface detail would, I feel, do wonders. Use a round, or at least a rounded, shield. I know the Space Wolf=Viking/Celtic thing is often overplayed, and it may even be unsuitable for a mounted figure, but it's always seemed to "fit" better in my mind for them to be modeled that way. Obviously there are few models available for TWM, so there is little you coud do about it, but the lion looks a little small to me. I want to end on a positive note, because I really do like this model. So I'll say that you've clearly put a lot of thought and effort into it already and it shows, and I'm looking forward to seeing it weathered etc.. nurglespuss
Hi there :P Cheers for the great feedback :) Your quite right about the elvish armour, I ummed and ahed about changing it, and should have really done so. But I am going to make another one (the chariot had 2!) but this one I am tempted to turn into a mechanised wolf. I just need to get hold of a wolf head, to look at while I'm at it :) About the colour on the armour, your right, in that photo they look very similar, but in 'real' life the thunderbolts and screaming animal are more orangey-pink and the lion is based off dark flesh, with grey added to make highlights. But, again on the next one the armour will 'pop' more from the model. Anyway, thanks you've given me a lot to think about! Now I best do some 'proper' work :) (and I just noticed the back pack I made up to go with him does actually 'fit' thanks to those soulder pads... Get the green stuff out lumpy! dublindawg
This made me breakdown and purchase the elf chariot box set. Now I just have to wait a couple more days to start my WL on TWM. Now the question will be, should I go all out and have 3 full units of TWC lead by WGBL's and WL on thunderwolves supported by grey hunters in rhino's and vindi's. nurglespuss
Go for it! its great fun. One thing I will say, paint the lion and rider separately! Its a bugger getting round with a brush!! Cheers :) Glad I could provide an idea! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/182419-thunderwolf-lion-rider-pics/#findComment-2158118 Share on other sites

How many points. I was only able to get two units in 2000 points. I ran some rough numbers and it would be around 2500pts to have the following: WL w/TWM, FA, BoR, SotW WGBL w/TWM TLWC WGBL w/TWM TH/SS 5TWC 5TWC 5TWC 10GH w/rhino, MGx2 10GH w/rhino, MGx2 10GH w/rhino, PGx2 Vindi Vindi Then I started looking at what I would need to buy to make this list, 14 mounts, a Vindi and 2 wolf pack boxes for the riders. Then I figured what the wife would do to me if I bought all of that on top of what I have already purchased in the past few months. One unit lead by a WL will be fine. El Scotcho
Well damn, and I was all set to wait until March to see if they released Thunder Wolf mounts in the 2nd wave. I may have to go and buy some sissy tree huggers to get those lions, for conversion purposes. nurglespuss
Hi there :) I used some really old space marine legs (the ones that used to come with the 6 part space marine kid (Torso & head atached, legs, back pack, arms, shoulder pads, gun) and cut out the groid completely. I remade the I then cut up the leg that was too straight, repositioned it and green stuffed a new knee. I then stuck the legs to the lion saddle, where I wanted them, and resculpted the groin :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/182419-thunderwolf-lion-rider-pics/#findComment-2159954 Share on other sites
Tybrus
It looks great, and I love the idea. My on only problem is the lions color. An "Ice" lion would live near well ice and well brown does not help a predator hunt. When you started this I had vision of some white lions or even some light blue lions (I may still try this myself). Anyway great work and love the idea as you can tell. Your painting is wodnerful I hoipe I can do half as good... nurglespuss
Cheers mate! Your quite right, Istarted with the idea of an Ice Lion, but no matter how I looked at it, I worried that it would just look like the high elf lion from the chariot, so, I decided to go for dark and menacing (in fact the scheme is sort of inspired by the cat/dog things from chronicles of riddick) and its now a Calabinite lion instead, from a defeated enemies menagerie. Thanks for the compliments! I'll be honest the lion sort of paints itself with very little help from me!
