MODELING & PAINTING

It’s now time to develop the images that will be used on the downloadable datasheets that will be created for each of the datasheets that qualified in Stage 1.

QUALIFIED DATASHEETS

While a lot of hard work and effort went into the datasheets entered in Stage 1 of the competition, only a handful received the required marks of 7 or higher by both the panel of judges and the rest of the membership in order to qualify for Stage 2. These were:

Each of these datasheets will be included in Stage 2. In addition, these datasheets will be worked into an upcoming Eye of Terror campaign project to be published at a later date at the Liber Bellum site.

All members of the Bolter & Chainsword are encouraged to participate in Stage 2 by modeling and painting models suitable for representing one or more of the qualified datasheets listed above. Note that it is not necessary to have participated in Stage 1 of this contest in order to participate in Stage 2 – anyone may enter models for Stage 2.

The only caveat is that those members whose datasheets qualified for Stage 2 may only submit images for other datasheets if they submit images for all of their own that qualified in this stage. For example, Firenze created the Knight Paladin Titan. If Firenze wants to submit images for the Spear of Russ datasheet, he must first submit images for the Knight Paladin Titan.

IMPORTANT!

Members aren’t required to paint up all of the models possible in a unit. We’ll be using the same image cloning techniques that Games Workshop has used for its datasheets, so members are only required to submit images for a certain number of minimum models as determined for each sheet. Members are only required to submit images for each of the required unit types, with the same unit images being suitable for all instances where that unit is in the formation. The minimum unit size (per the datasheet, if applicable, or per the codex if no minimum size is given on the datasheet) is the minimum requirement – there’s no reason to max the unit size out. In addition, since Games Workshop has cloned images within the same squad, we’ll do the same thing. So we’ll allow images of models to work for up to three models in the unit.

Example: If a formation included four Space Marine Tactical squads, the squad would only have to be painted one time and would only have to consist of 1 Sergeant (must stand out as a Sergeant), 1 special weapon Space Marine, 1 heavy weapon Space Marine, and 4 standard Space Marines. The remaining 3 standard Space Marines would be created by cloning the 4 standard Space Marines (probably cloning different ones in each instance of the Tactical squad pictured on the datasheet). The same Tactical squad would be cloned for each of the four times it appears on the datasheet, putting the images of the models in different spots in order to change things up a bit.

And before anyone gets worried, I’m going to spell out the minimum requirements for each of the qualified datasheets at the end of this post.

SUBMISSIONS & DEADLINE

Members will save these images in their own Private Bolter & Chainsword galleries*, and each image must be no wider than 700 pixels and no taller than 1000 pixels. Members will submit all images to Brother Tyler by PM, including the URL of each image in the message.

Deadline for image submission is midnight EST on Saturday 28 November, 2009. This means you have about five weeks.

*If you’re not sure how to create/use your own private B&C gallery, check out the Bolter & Chainsword 101 or contact me.

VOTING

Winners will be selected by popular vote. Once I have all of the entries, I will post them in a discussion. Members will then have 1 week to discuss the entries and to submit their votes.

Votes will be submitted by PM to me, with each member selecting the 1 entry for each of the qualified datasheets that they think should be used. Members may not vote for their own entry (if they submit one). For each datasheet, the entry with the most votes wins and will be used on the datasheet.

In addition, as with Stage 1 of the contest, the winners will be allowed to use special signature banners bragging about their accomplishment while participants will also be allowed to use special signatures displaying their participation in this community event.

MINIMUM MODEL REQUIREMENTS

Models must be appropriate to the datasheet – meaning they must be of the appropriate scale and representation (e.g., no using the old Epic models to represent the Knight, the models for the Space Wolf datasheet must be Space Wolves – no DIY Chapter using Codex: Space Wolves, etc.).

Please, no editing in nifty effects such as lightning bolts, backgrounds, etc. The only image editing allowed will be to turn backgrounds transparent (because you’ll be saving me the hassle of having to do that myself).

UNQUALIFIED DATASHEETS

The other datasheets that didn’t qualify for Stage 2 may be re-worked for a follow-on to Stage 2. This re-working should be conducted now, with the discussions being re-opened for that express purpose. If developed suitably, these datasheets might also be worked into the Eye of Terror campaign project to be published at a later date at the Liber Bellum site.

...I like how I was used for the example :(

Well, the Knight is actually the most difficult to get done. Each of the other datasheets has a minimum requirement that is pretty easy to accomplish in the time allowed - the Knight will take some construction. :)

And it is. It was one of my entries into the Call of the B&C. But I now have to paint it.

I have seen different setups of photos of figures based on groups and formations.. is there a set style we are looking for?

What is preferred?

Dynamic entry in dramatic poses:

Not sure how to submit just a single pic that would provide a proper display and still evoke the name of the datasheet formation, and still work for your editing and pasting.

Thanks for the guidance.

How many official datasheets have the formation represented by (2d) artwork? How many have the formation represented by actual models?

Feel free to supplement pictures of the model(s) with (2d) artwork if you want, but the contest is for the actual models.

Is the reality of converting an accurate Knight Paladin Titan sinking in? To be honest, that was the one part where I assessed a weakness with the datasheet - converting an appropriate model is at least an order of magnitude more difficult that collecting most of the other units submitted on datasheets for the contest.

Ok thanks I wont do the artwork. And Tyler, I have a Knight already. I just need to paint it. This is it here:

It just needs the paint job.

I continue to receive questions, so here is a little clarification.

For those datasheets that include formations of units, each model should be submitted as a separate image. My suggestion here is that you either have a consistent setup so that images are the same size (i.e., keep your camera in a fixed position and use the same mark for placement of minis) or you take a single image that includes all of the models spaced sufficiently apart to allow you to splice each into its own image.

If at all possible, minimize the background. Placing a white sheet of paper behind the models works, as do a number of other tricks. This will facilitate the removal of the background for later use. If you have the capability to turn backgrounds transparent (i.e., you have Photoshop or a similar image editing program, or are willing to put in the time to turn all background white in Microsoft Paint or a similar low end image editing program).

Crop as much of the wasted space/background from the image as possible.

There is some confusion on the minimum requirements, with some interpreting those requirements as affecting the squad size. I may have articulated this poorly, so I'm giving it another go. We're going to use the same image cloning as GW, with each model submitted being able to represent up to 3 models. In most cases this will allow us to represent squads at the maximum size. Squads still follow the normal size restrictions/requirements as dictated in the appropriate codex, unless otherwise specified in the datasheet. For our purposes, each squad will be at the max size when depicted on the datasheet (unless the formation specifies otherwise or the minimum requirements I've outlined above don't allow for enough models).

Here's a rundown of examples, based on a fictional datasheet.

Let's say that one of the datasheets is for a formation of Grey Knights in power armour. Regardless of whatever else is in the formation, the formation requires a minimum of 3 Grey Knights squads, each including one psycannon and one incinerator.

The minimum required models for the Grey Knights squad would be a Justicar, a Grey Knight with an Incinerator, a Grey Knight with a Psycannon, and 3 Grey Knights with Nemesis Force Weapons. If I were painting minis for this datasheet I might submit images as follows (with exceptions as noted below).

Justicar:

gallery_26_548_19560.gif

Incinerator:

gallery_26_548_67103.gif

Psycannon:

gallery_26_548_20587.gif

Grey Knights with Storm Bolter and Nemesis Force Weapon:

gallery_26_548_69501.gif

gallery_26_548_26942.gif

gallery_26_548_39312.gif

If you're impressed with the quality of the painting, don't be. I just copied the images from Games Workshop's website to use in this example. I didn't paint the minis.

You'll also notice two things. First, the colored circles behind the regular Grey Knights. Ignore those. They wouldn't be in your images. I'm going to use those in the next part of the example.

Also, I've turned the backgrounds transparent. Your images may or may not include this depending on your resources.

So let's say that those images won and were chosen to represent our fictional Grey Knights formation. For the three or more squads of Grey Knights required by the formation, I'd combine the images in different patterns for each version, resulting in something like:

Squad 1:

gallery_26_548_30234.jpg

Squad 2:

gallery_26_548_9854.jpg

Squad 3:

gallery_26_548_18304.jpg

The colored circles serve to illustrate how individual models will be cloned within the same unit, each representing up to a total of three models within that unit. Don't worry, the colored circles won't be in your images or in the formations on the datasheet.

As I've said before, members are more than welcome to paint more than the minimum required number of models, reducing the amount of image cloning that takes place if it turns out that their images win and are used on the datasheet. You might paint up individual models to represent each of the models in the squad, or even individual squads. As long as you submit the minimum required number of models for the formation, you're eligible (and if you're one of the members that created one of the eligible datasheets, you have to paint up the minis to represent your datasheets before you can submit images for other datasheets).

Also, please don't post images of your minis anywhere until after the voting is done. I'd like to keep the creators anonymous until after people have voted. You can create a Private gallery of your own here at the B&C for this purpose.

Hopefully that has cleared things up a bit, but don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Going through the Apocalypse Rulebook, Apocalypse Reload, and Imperial Armour Apocalypse, the only official datasheet I could find that wasn't represented by an actual model was the Warlord Battle Titan. There are probably a fair few of those that are available as downloads that either have no models pictured or have 2d artwork in place of models, but I'm not considering those.

This project, however, requires painted models to represent the formation. The reason for this is to demonstrate usability. It's really easy to come up with a lot of wild datasheet ideas that will never be used, but I wanted to see datasheets that might actually be used. If a model is such a pain to create that the creator of the datasheet isn't willing to buy/convert a model, then the creator should probably have created a different datasheet.

In fact, any future Apocalypse datasheet competitions will include the requirement that the formation be represented by accurately painted models.

  • 5 weeks later...

Yesterday was the last day to submit entries for the contest. Had I not just returned from a little road trip, I'd have posted that in a more timely manner. Sorry for being a bit late.

More on the entries tomorrow.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry for the delay, guys. There was a problem with one of the images which is being resolved, but I'm away on a business trip, so I'm unable to attend to the issue right now.

I hope to take care of the issue very soon (like this weekend) and move forward.

  • 2 weeks later...

My apologies for the continued delay. The other member wasn't able to come through with pictures, so it's time to move forward.

First, the level of participation in this stage was very disappointing. There were a total of four entries, one of which needed to be fixed, so we're down to three entries. Since each of these entries is for a different datasheet, they all win by default. Congratulations to our winners. Here they are:

Brother Richard submitted images for the Space Marine Vengeance Force. You can see them at:

Here is the Marshall

The Marshal's Terminator Command Squad

SB Sgt

SB Brother w/ Assault Cannon x2

Veteran of a hundred wars SB

Standard SBs to fill out the squad

Then we have the Sword Brethren in Terminator Armor at least a squad of these.

SB Sgt

SB Brother w/ Assault Cannon

SB Brother w/ heavy flamer

Standard SBs to fill out the squad

I would add a close combat group in TDA, but I just don’t have many painted to a decent standard yet.

If you could possibly do me a favor and not use the plasma gunner from my first list, instead add this special melta. I think it would be very appropriate for the Apoc force to be guided by this special veteran.

Veteran Brother LeBanc

Firenze submitted images for his Knight Paladin Titan. You can see them at: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...i&img=40027

I'll post the images that each of our winners will be able to use as their awards for winning soon (they're on my laptop, so I'll have to upload them).

I'll also be turning each of these datasheets into downloadable products soon.

For the other datasheets that made it this far but which didn't have images submitted, I'll take care of those later.
