Different Models in the Wolves

I started collecting and playing the Wolves back in 94 and since then my collection has grown and evolved. Aside from a mild Nurgle infection, they are the only army I have ever owned. The problem lies in the fact that there were some mini's that I just had to have and I did some expiramenting with other chapter paintjobs.

For example, when the Black Templars came out I loved the Emperor's Champion and made a small contingent of Black Templars to go along with him. In my old gaming circle I would use the Champion as an attatched Wolfguard with Grey Hunters. The Black Templar Scouts I had done were taken in under the wings of the older wiser Wolf Scouts and taught their ways of battle and finally the Long Fangs adopted the Devastators. I painted up some Flesh Tearers and included them as SkyClaws.

I concocted this long and involved storyline for my "Great Crusade" about how my Wolf Lord was in self imposed Exile till he brought back the head of Khârn the Betrayer, and the troops that weren't of the Wolves were survivors from other chapters Vioarr (my Wolf Lord) had either rescued, or found them stranded and offered them a chance to get revenge.

My old gaming group loved the idea and had no problems with this. No the Templars didn't use any of their Codex Equipment niether did the Flesh Tearers. I just loved the idea of a joint crusade with a bunch of desparate survivors from different chapters looking to redeem their names through victories.

I haven't had a chance to play up here yet, but I am wondering how well recieved will my army be? If I was new to your area and explained my eccentric collection and how they came together would you let it fly or would you stick to the rules?

Game-wise, as long as all your models are WYSIWYG and I can clearly tell what goes where and is armed with what, I couldn't give a flying hoot.

Fluff-wise, I'm against the whole thing. Joint crusade, perhaps. Combined packs? Never. Consider the process of initiation and reinforcement.

All aspirants who pass the tests and are deemed ready are put into Blood Claws packs. These are fellow aspirants who endured the trials together and have trained together. These are their brethren for life, their bonds thicker than anything that exists in this galaxy.

As they fight together, they take casualties. It is a sad fact of war, and their numbers will dwindle. When deemed experienced enough, they are promoted to Grey Hunter packs, and given a particular affinity for heavy weapons, become Long Fangs when time permits.

Blood Claw packs who do not lose their head-strong, impetuous nature become either Skyclaws or Swiftclaws.

At no point, ever, do these packs receive reinforcements. At no time are their numbers bolstered to replace those who have fallen. It is why packs get progressively smaller and smaller as they advance up the hierarchical structure of the Wolves.

The only time individual members will be pulled out of packs is to either join the Wolf Guard, become Wolf Scouts, or be exiled as Wolf Blades.

Wolf Guard are chosen for insane heroism/bravado, and become the personal bodyguard of their liege Wolf Lord. Wolf Scouts are sent beyond the frontlines to act as scouts and forward sentries, operating behind enemy lines often for years at a time. It is not their job to train young pups or acolytes/aspirants/initiates. Wolf Blades are those who have been chosen/exiled to Terra to serve as bodyguards for the nobles of House Belisarius, the allied Navigator house to the Space Wolves.

Should a pack be decimated so that only 1 remains, these become Lone Wolves, seeking the avenge their fallen brothers or die trying.

The only instance I can see packs being put together (and even then, it's mainly for Blood Claws and Grey Hunters), is when they've been decimated to only a handful (say 3 to 5), but are not ready for advancement, or have no other option but to remain what they are. At that point I can see them merging with other similar packs who have suffered grievous casualties. And even then that situation is far and few between.

EDIT: Black Templars don't have scouts. They have Neophytes and Initiates, all of which are grouped together into Crusader Squads. Neophytes (represented by "scout" models) are aspirants who have been selected to become marines, and are undergoing training, but have not yet been implanted with the full set of Geneseed, nor are they given Power Armor. They are paired to an Initiate, who they follow and learn from, and when that Initiate dies, his Geneseed, Power Armor, and weapons are bestowed upon the Neophyte (assuming he is alive), who then becomes an Initiate and in turn (given time and experience) is given a Neophyte of his own.

DV8

I would tend to agree with DV8 in respects that packs wouldn't accept outsiders into an individual pack to fill out numbers. But I could see where the overall leader of a company that decimated in terms of fielding a battle ready force, adds seperate units to fill in the FOC slots.

Now could those new units operate as "grey hunter" packs or whatever unit they are replacing, I wouldn't have a problem with that so long as they are WYSIWYG. So if you wanted to field a unit of templars as a GH or Long Fang pack in their original armor that would be fine. But to have actual SW brothers intermingled into the pack would be a stretch fluff wise.

IMO a rag-tag force in the sense of the Rebel Alliance, having several different races, but here having several different army contingents would be cool to see and fight against.

I guess you had to have been running with my gaming group. I sorta filled out the army during the Black 13th Crusade. It was a BFG battle that went horribly wrong for myself and my friend who was running the Templars. It was a 3 vs 3 battle Wolves, Templars and Imperial Fleet Vs 3 Chaos players. The battle was an orgy of mutual destruction to try and stop a Nurgle dedicated Space Hulk from infecting a planet. The last acts of our Marine Fleets were to launch boarding tubes. We then switched over to 40k/Spacehulk to do the boarding action.

My army grew out of the survivors that were left. Mikey, my friend who played Templars did the same thing only reversed. We only had a handful of survivors after that battle, but we had an absolute blast playing it out.

I guess I will have to do some fixing then....anybody know a safe way of stripping plastic minis?
