Skald_Thorgrimm
As one of my HQ choices, I'm planning on taking one of our excellent Rune Priests (in power armour, on foot) to make use of our wonderful new psychic powers. The question is what unit to have him with? I could leave him alone as an independant character, but that seems to make him too vulnerable. Especially as he'll need to be near the middle of the battlefield as so many powers are short-ranged. (Living lightning notwithstanding, but I have a significant quantity of long-ranged high-strength shooting from my Long Fangs and Land Speeders already, so I'm not too fussed) I'm trying to decide between a pack of GH or WG, and how much to tool them up. If they're tooled up for shooting, then they'll have to shoot with the rune priest unless the priest uses one of the few powers that isn't a psychic shooting attack. They could be ready for close combat: make good use of the rune weapon I'm paying for. I already have two GH packs; one for home objective defense, one for siezing objectives near the centre of the board or out on a flank. (the bloodclaws in the Crusader are for my opponent's home objectives) So I'm leaning towards a WG pack as I don't have one and my Elites section is looking a little light. In my rambling way, that is what I'm asking: how best to equip a WG pack to complement a Rune Priest's abilities? How does a counter-attack defensive close-combat unit sound? (yes, I know virtually the entire army has counter-attack, I meant as a unit to face down the remnants of my opponents close assault wave after my GH/LF have tried shooting them to ribbons) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/182703-rune-priests-unit/ Share on other sites
DV8
Point for point, if you're looking for a unit that can provide close range firepower, and a counter-attack or charge to finish up, Grey Hunters are better. Consider: 10 Wolf Guard, 180 points Bolters, Bolt Pistols, Frag and Krak Grenades 10 Grey Hunters, 150 points Bolters, Bolt Pistols, Close Combat Weapons, Frag and Krak Grenades Both shoot exactly the same, both charge and counter-charge exactly the same (both have 3 attacks charge or be charged), but there is a 30 point difference. What do you get or lose? Wolf Guard are Elites, and thus cannot score. They are also Leadership 9. Grey Hunters are Troops, and thus can score. They are also Leadership 8. Unless you plan on kitting out the Wolf Guard with specialists and are willing to spend a considerable amount of points to upgrade them, stick with Grey Hunters (with or without an attached Pack Leader). Cheaper, but no less effective. DV8 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/182703-rune-priests-unit/#findComment-2161242 Share on other sites
