Best HQ choice for the SW army

Wouldn't it be subjective based on what opponent you are facing and personal choice on the "flavor" of their Army? Some like Bikes or Speeders, others like Pods and so forth. Hard to be purely objective on this unless you pick Logan, right?

And even Logan has disadvantages

Well, other than being more expensive than a Land Raider I can't see them. And even then, compared to what we can spend on a "generic" HQ, that's not excessive...

As for the standard ones, they have their roles.

Wolf Lord - well, these are as they always have been. Fully adaptable CC powerhouses, these guys can be equipped to deal with anything and will almost always account well for themselves. Expensive, but given half a chance they can go toe to toe with just about anything and come out on top.

Wolf Guard Battle Leaders - Now significantly worse than a Lord, but still as good as any Astartes Captain or Chapter Master they boast pretty much the same role as the Lords but are cheaper and slightly inferior in Attacks, Wounds and Ld. They make excellent "Heroes" and with the lower points tag can be used more as a suicide unit with a specific role.

Rune Priests - Boy did these guys get a buff or 3. Psychic Powers of note are Living Lightning and Murderous Hurricane for all round use, however they are no longer CC powerhouses - in fact, unless you've got a Daemon on low wounds or something that isn't immune to ID then these guys are best out of the hurly burly of combat where the psychic powers can have freer rein.

Wolf Priests - despite getting a nerfing in terms of raw power, these guys should be in the thick of it. Oath of War on a full unit of Claws is devastating, as it gets round the traditional problem of the whelps struggling to hit a damn thing. A few extra Power Weapon blows are not to be sniffed at either, and the points are low enough for these guys to be a staple of any self respecting Lords lists.

Very good review there, Vass. I love the new Wolf Priests even if they did lose a couple of attacks. They're cheap and make a squad of blood claws an extremely powerful squad.

For larger games I'm going and forth with Ragnar and Logan trying to find the right one for me.

How do you guys take Rune Priests?

Bare bones? With a Chooser? Runic Armor or in TDA?

What about a cheap Wolf Tail Talisman for that potential double nullify?

How many in your army, what unit does he join and why?

There you go, plenty of meat here for you guys to dissect.

I'm going to be sticking with 2 Battle Leaders, and a wolf priest when the army gets bigger. I think the rune priest is more bling than anything at the moment, I'm not sure they have a specific role at present. However, the mega bonus with the SW codex is, the sheer number of low level, fairly cheap HQ's you can have, rather than the traditional big hitters that are still point sinks (and more than expected).

I run Logan religiously. :)

Terminator Army for me!

Breakdowns of the other HQs, as I see them. Generic ones first;

Wolf Lord: Very customisable, and very powerful. I plan to run my first on a TWM with a 15 FW bodyguard.

Rune Priest: Excelent Utility. From the 'better than a Psychic Hood' Rune Weapon, to the Infiltration denial Chooser (Shrike? Hah!). And some very potent Powers.

WGBL: Would only use one if I wanted a FB in TDA (:)) or didn't have the points for the WL. The extra 25 points for the WL I feel is the better choice. If only Saga of the Hunter didn't suck...

Wolf Priest: Only use one if you plan on tricking out Ragnar in a LR. Otherwise, meh. Fearless isn't that good in 5th, I'd much prefer a Stubborn Ld10. Oh Hai Logan! ;)

Named HQs;

Logan: I can't not use him, so I'm biased already. But. He's a beast in CC. The sheer amont of Powerfist Attacks he can have is shocking! EW is great, and the +1A once per game is just Gravy. Tank Hunter or a Generic Prefered Enemy (beter than your Wolf Priests!). What's not to love about Logan?

Ragnar: Can be squishy, but then give him two Wolves to soak up the first two Power Fists he'll take in CC. An utter beast in CC, more killy than Logan. Especially when combo-ed with a WP (or Logan) for Prefered Enemy. FC for I6/S6 attacks. Shear hell to face!

Bjorn: I used to love this guy! AV13, 5+ Invulerable, Venerable reroll. Second game I used him, he died to a Krak Missile first turn. :/ IMHO too expensive for that sort of one hit kill liability, with a quite heafy in game penalty for his death.

Canis: I was going to run him. Then I realised a WL could do nearly what Canis does, for the same points. And not have a sucky Ld8. And the WL could have an Invulnerable save on top. Skip him. Unless you *really* want dual wolf claws, and expect to have him surrounded by 6+ enemy minis (what a rubbish special rule....)

Njal: RP on steriods. You like RPs? Njal is better in every way. ;) But costs it!

Ulrik: Meh. Wolf Priests aren't great, and Ulrik just doesn't stand out enough for me.

This is another one of those "What is the best tool to fix something with" type questions.

It depends on what needs fixing. I think a more appropriate question may be "how best to maximize each HQ based on X mission they have in the game.

Or just an all-comers list without any "let's tweak vs this army".

I've had lots of success with a Wolf Lord with the following as a "kill anything" character.

Thunderwolf Mount, Frost Blade, Storm Shield, Wolftooth Necklace, 2 Fenrisian Wolves, Saga of the Warrior Born.

There a many many variations of said character, of course... such as:

Thunderwolf Mount, Thunderhammer, Storm Shield, Wolftooth Necklace, 2 Fenrisian Wolves, Saga of the Beastslayer

Though that second loadout I'd rather give to a Wolf guard battle leader as he's less expensive, and 30 points could be better spent elsewhere. That load out works wonders against anything that's normally hard to kill. Everything from Tomb Spiders to Hive Tyrants.
