Gentlemanloser
Rending Lightning Claws is about all he gets. Instead, you oculd have a much more customisable home grown HQ on a TWM, for equivalent points. Lets look at a WGBL. We've got 185 points to play with. Making a near identicle copy of Canis would cost; WGBL, TWM, WTN, WTT, SotW, 2xWC 185 points on the nose. The difference in stats is the lose of 1W and 1W, for gaining 1Ld. And the loss of a silly special rule that will most likely never come into play. Oh and FW as troops. But who cares, they can't score anyway. Not a great choice, if you really want to run a mini exactly decked out like Canis. But, consider droppng the 2xWC for a FB. You lose the reroll, but gain a S6 Power Weapon (and lose Rending). But you gain 15 points back. You then have the option, to drop the WTT and spend an extra 10 points over Canis to gain a Storm Shield. The WGBL could also take Melta Bmbs which Canis doesn't have. How about a WL instead? The 185 points of Canis would net you; WL, TWM, SotW, PW. With 5 points spare. State wise, you'd have +1WS (so no need for the WTN) and +2Ld (a joy for anyone who's have their TWC and Canis pinned...). Spending a few more points could give you a Frost Blade (rocking in just slighty more expensive than Canis, and you still have the option to purchase a Storm Shield, or A Belt of Russ, to gain an Invulnerable save while retaining the same number of Attacks. If you don't really care about Wolfkin, and making any FW's I5 (and the Leadership bonus is /meh, you'l be running a SW with ATKSNF with them anyway, and using thier Ld), you could buff the WL out with Saga of the Bear for T5 EW goodness. Why use Canis? I really feel his special rules need to do more, or his points reduced, to make him a viable option over a WL/WGBL. VorpalDoom
I think the lack of an Invulnerable save is reason enough to not take him. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/182790-canis/#findComment-2162268 Share on other sites
Yeti
For his points, he's a good deal, you can't argue with that. You may not like his special abilities, but they do come in handy and since they are essentially free ... why complain about their usefulness? Now, if you don't like the way he's equipped, nothing is stopping you from taking a battle leader or wolf lord and kitting him out however you like. It'll probably cost you more, especially if you want an Inv save and you can give him different functionalities (tank hunter for example). It's up to you how you spend your points. As for non-scoring troops ... that's not the point. You can flood the battlefield with a cheap meat screen and still have FA slots for TWolves, speeders or (prefix)claws and have troops slots to space for GHs that do score objectives. That alone is worth taking Canis. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/182790-canis/#findComment-2162313 Share on other sites
Gentlemanloser
Sure, if you've got no point limit... Even with Ld7 from Wolfkin, FW are fragile. They die to anything that looks at them funny, then run off the board wihtout being able to regroup. If they don't get pinned. The best (and to me only way, unless you're filling up left over points with 5 FW or some such) to run a full FW squad would be to attach a TWM riding IC to them. It gives them the Ld they require, and gives them back the ATSKNF they lost. Canis doesn't have anything special enough to stand out, when a home grown IC can be built to imitate him, or surpase him, depending. Now, FW bought as wargear to existing ICs/LW are pure awesomeness. :( The point about Canis' specials, it that in essence we are paying for them. and they are mostly worthless. Canis should either have a point break when comapred to a home grown IC, or have Specials that are worth the increase. As it stands, he has neither. And for using him, you lose the customisation open to you from a Home Grown TWM rider. LoneSniperSG
Canis doesn't have anything special enough to stand out, when a home grown IC can be built to imitate him, or surpase him, depending. Except to have an utterly awesome model. The point about Canis' specials, it that in essence we are paying for them. and they are mostly worthless. Canis should either have a point break when comapred to a home grown IC, or have Specials that are worth the increase. As it stands, he has neither. And for using him, you lose the customisation open to you from a Home Grown TWM rider. So use his model as something else. Or scrap him and use Lukas instead. Gentlemanloser
Seeing as he's the only SW riding a TW currently, you could easily use him as either a TWC, or a WL/WGBL on a TWM...
