Fire Wolf
Hey guys, I'd say about a month a go my buddy was going off about playing WH40K, which I'm familiar with being a pretty avid fan of the Dawn of War series and mulling over the Lexicanum and some Codex's my friend has and absorbing lore and all that good stuff. A couple weeks ago we first started playing some low point games (Tau vs SM, Orks vs Tau, Ork vs SM) and got familiar with the basic rules and all that good stuff. He's already got quite the collection coming along while I'm still sitting back, pondering a starter kit even. Going through all the Chapters I'm most drawn to the Space Wolves and to get to the point, in the event I decided to break down and get an army together, do you guys have any tips? What units I should get off the bat? I'm aware that the Space Wolves seem to be a bit more Assault oriented, should there be some general strategies I should be aware of? Anything for a newbie works, I thank ya'll for any responses in advance. Warhorse47
Okay, the Wolves are top line Space Marines. We will field fewer units than other SM forces. We can do it all, it's just the closer we get to you, the nastier we get. Get the Codex first, read it and try out your buddies army using the SW rules. Then if you like it get the new boxed set to start off. Welcome to the place by the way! Hfran Morkai
I'd say a SW battleforce as your first army purchase, two Grey Hunter/Blood Claw Packs, a drop pod for one and a scout pack is not to be sniffed at, especially when the drop pod is pretty much free. Even if you don't like it you can trade it with someone. I'd suggest a couple of Grey Hunter Packs and an HQ of your choice to start with. HQ's: Awesome close combat beast: Wolf Lord Slightly cheaper combat: Wolf Guard Battle Leader Unit Booster: Rune Priest Psyker with funky powers: Rune Priest. Then I'd suggest a unit for tank hunting, of course your scouts can do that but Long Fangs are pretty nifty. Fire Wolf
Yeap I'm aware of the above! Like I said, I do love lore xD Those sound like some pretty good suggestions though, I was looking into a battle force. I like the idea of just playing my friend's SM army with Space Wolves rules... Grey Mage
I would grab the army book for SWs and do exactly that- just play with the marines for a little bit. If you like them as much as you seem to, youll probly want your own soon enough. When/if that occurs, I reccommend the battleforce for your two troops and some scouts, and then a SM commander box... if you mix and match the bitz a bit you can get a nice looking Wolf Lord or Priest and have a fully functioning army, ready to go. After that... I reccommend long fangs, and probly an assault on black reach dread, or a regular dread. Then you can decide if you want to go after DPs, Mechanized, or Footslogging style forces... or a mix of them. How you end up playing them will determine most any of your purchases after that. Also- something to note- I highly reccommend buying tactical squads to mix in with the new wolf pack box- itll give you more weapon options, and some MLs for your Long Fangs and make it easier to distinguish wolf gaurd and characters from Grey Hunters. dragon950
Looking for some advice, don't play Space Wolves just becuase they are new and your looking getting in to 40K. Look around the GW website at all the different armies and choose which one you like the best. Wispy
...He's been reading lore, and is drawn to the Space Wolves because he actually likes their fluff, as opposed to them being the new hotness. Reading before posting? In any case, I found my way into 40k and Space Wolves a year ago in the exact same way as you - Very much into Dawn of War, and started reading Lexicanum in my spare time, and inevitably stumbled onto the Space Wolves. I started my first army with the old Grey Hunter box because I wanted to learn how to paint, and wasn't actually interested in playing until about six month's later. I bought a ton of things that I only bought because I wanted to paint things, and when I finally decided on playing the game, my army was this hideous chimera beast. After doing things the completely wrong away, my advice would be this: Greyhunters and Wolf Scouts are a good start, which makes the Battleforce a good choice. For secondary purchases, I'd consider rhinos for your grey hunters and a dreadnought(who is probably a better candidate for the drop pod the battleforce comes with). Toasterfree
id first like to say that you have picked a great home. one you will always relish, and if you ever leave will regret it and then come back. secondly i would read my tactica series that I have going right now. You can find it here. it should help you decide what units you want. I am not done, but stay tuned to it. Radixon
the best starter set is the battle force tbh. 2 grey hunter units, 5 scouts and a drop pod. for your hq i would recommend the space marine commander kit to build a rune priest, the best value hq unit in the dex. happy hunting Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/182804-prospective-new-wh40k-player-looking-into-space-wolves/#findComment-2163425 Share on other sites
DragonPup
While the SM Commander kit has many nice bits, if you want to get a rune priest, why not get the very nice blister than GW makes? WolfLordLars
You can do a nice 500pt list with the Battle Box and a SW Terminator box. Both are highly recommended from me. Almost considering a second Terminator box myself, just so I can replace the older metal SW Terminators with the new ones. Two GH packs, one scout pack, a pod (for the GH), a Wolf Guard Battle Leader/Wolf Lord, and 3-4 Wolf Guards (heck, throw them in the pod) should we well over 500pts, depending on options. Wouldnt even be a bad idea to turn 1-2 of those models into Lone Wolves. From there, a Dread is a good investment. For starting players, I would recommend against Long Fangs, Skyclaws, or storm claws, but any of those units can easily be made with the left over parts from the Box Set and the generic marine box of choice (Devestators, Assault, or Bikes). You tend to not see them in every SW List, as they tend to be depending on the players tastes. Getting a Special Character is another good idea, with Njal being a very good one to go with. Let us know what you decide to go with.
