Ragnar Blackmane

With the release of the new codex I've been putting together a "Claws of Russ" drop pod army list and wanted Ragner to lead since it fits in with the fluff.

However the model is just so old, dont get me wrong the I think the original Jes Goodwin Space wolves sculpts are still some of the finest, but technology has moved on since 1992 and I wanted something a little more dynamic to lead my wolves into battle.

So with my saw and clippers I went about cutting Ragner limb from limb!

First replacing the legs, but keeping the original feet.

Then carefully repositioning the arms, using elbow joints from the plastic space marine kits. (positioning the arm holding the bolt pistol gave me a little trouble, couldnt quite get it right on the first couple of goes)

Green stuff was then used to fill in the gaps and to replace parts of the cloak and hair which had to be cut away.

Finally with a few bits from the bits box and a lick of paint, Ragnar is ready for the table top.

Im pretty pleased with the outcome, just got the base to finish off.

On a final note I actually used two Ragnars, one complete model and another which id used for parts (the left wolf cloak covered shoulder) this second model provided me with the right shoulder pad and the sword arms gauntlet.

Please let me know what you think?

Well done! Looks so much better than the poor, old sculpt of dear old Rags. I still think we will be seeing a new sculpt of him some time in the future.

However back on topic, I like the fact you've kept to the classic pieces of Ragnar to still make him distinguishable.

Also let us know how drop-podding Ragnar works. I guess if you pod with hunters you rapid fire and next turn assault with them but Wolf Guard would be nasty with Ragnar, just you don't get three weapons

I didnt want to change him too much since its a damn fine model, just very static. I'm pretty sure the new sculpt will do him proud!!

My plan in regards to drop-podding him is too also field 5 wolf guard, 4 in TDA with the other in power armour (so they all fit in the pod). The terminators are all equiped with storm bolters, 2 have Wolf claws, 1 has a thunder hammer and the last with a power sword. Since im taking 5 wolf guard im also adding a Cyclone missle launcher into the mix, giving me an assault force which can also lay down some fire as they exit the drop pod.

The plan is to drop in Ragnar and Wolf guard, open up with the Cyclone and the drop pods Deathwind then assault anything thats left in the following turn.

Yep, you've changed the whole dynamic with a few subtle and well done changes. Great work. You should try doing the same with Ulrik. His pose is just as static and he is more 'Ulrik the Half-pint' rather than 'the Slayer' with his current size vis-a-vis the newer models. I'm sure you'd do an excellent job with your skill!

Havnt had a chance to tackle Grimnar or Ulrik yet but I have got an update of Bjorn.
