EricBasser
I just wanted to look at the Norse Gods and compare them to the Special Characters in the new Codex. Everyone else feel free to add characters from the Space Wolves books, Other Great Companies in the Space Wolves, or even other Space Marines Chapters. I just wanted to share this with anyone not familiar with Norse Mythology. And possibly inspiration for stories for Wolf Lords, Priests, and any favorable characters you might have in your army. Lukas the Trickster – Loki. Trickster God. He tricked a blind god (Hod) into throwing a spear, and killing another god (Baldr). Sounds like Lukas. Arjac Rockfist – Thor. Throws his hammer and it comes back to him. Warrior God. Sounds like Arjac. Logan Grimnar – Odin. Chief God. Associated with Wisdom, War, Battle, and Death. Wisdom, War, and Battle seem to fit Grimnar. Canis Wolfborn – Fenrir. A Monstrous Wolf. I couldn’t really find a Norse god for Canis. Freyr comes close, but only because he rides a bore. Ulrik the Slayer – Heimdall. Guardian God. He will sound the horn for Ragnaok. Is able to hear grass grow and a single leaf fall. I see Ulrik like this god. Watching over the Fenris Tribes looking for the next promising warrior. Njal Stormcaller – Njord. Water God. He is associated with Sea, Seafearing, and Wind. Since Njal is a Rune Priest, and Lord of Tempests, I see this god fitting him. Ragnar Blackmane – Tyr. God of Single Combat, Victory, and Heroic Glory. That seems like Ragnar. All about close bombat. Bjorn – Mimir. A Wisdom God. During the Æsir–Vanir War, Mimir was beheaded. Odin carries around his head, which Mimir would give Odin secret knowledge. This sounds like Bjorn essentially becoming immortalized in Dreadnought armor. And having great wisdom to become an Ancient Tactician. Growler67
I would agree with your assessment as presented. Well done. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/182870-special-characters/#findComment-2163211 Share on other sites
Grey Mage
*shakes head* Bjorn is Tyr- God of honor and honorable combat. He gave up his hand to bind fenris to the earth and stay his ravages until the day of Ragnaroc. He gave up his position of power in the Aesir to Odin, and his symbol was a white hand. maznaz
There isn't a direct 1:1 correlation for most of them, and indeed that would be pretty boring. Njal, for example, has a lot of elements of Odin's mythology in his character. EricBasser
Agreed about the 1:1 correlation. If they came out with the characters named Odin, Loki, Thor, ect. I believe it would be boring. I just like tracing some of the likeness of the characters to Norse Mythology. Personally, I'm going to naming the Special Characters those names, then naming the vehicles after ships or weapons in Norse Mythology. Snekke is the smallest vessel that's still considered a long ship. Hence my Rhinos are called Snekke. My Drop Pods are going to be Gjallarhorn. The sound of these Pods dropping from above will be the begining of the end. Skídbladnir was Freyr's Ship. It always had a breeze to sail, and was so big it could hole all of population of Asguard. That would be my Land Raider Cruisader. Æsir Wolves. I just love the whole Norse feel to Space Wolves, and keeping the myths alive, I feel I should include them in my armies. Catheras
It's very nice to see that there are people in The US that actually know something of the Norse Mythology  Being a Norwegian myself, I started with Space Wolves because they were Vikings in Power Armor. If only they could learn to spell the names. And indeed, I think I might just build up a force of pups too. For that very reason. *grins* Sverd-tid, øks-tid, vind-tid, og varg-tid. For Russ! ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/182870-special-characters/#findComment-2163413 Share on other sites

Hfran Morkai
Not sure if the vikings liked wolves though.. Please tell me you're being sarcastic... One of their names was "Bodolf" which means "Wolf Leader" They greatly appreciated and admired the wolf, a fine warrior Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/182870-special-characters/#findComment-2163430 Share on other sites

lovesmuffins
Logan Grimnar – Odin. Chief God. Associated with Wisdom, War, Battle, and Death. Wisdom, War, and Battle seem to fit Grimnar. not true, if you read some of the fluff in the codex they lovingly refer to the emperor as "The Allfather"- which is odin's title The chief divinity of the Norse pantheon, the foremost of the Aesir. Odin is a son of Bor and Bestla. He is called Alfadir, Allfather, for he is indeed father of the gods. With Frigg he is the father of Balder, Hod, and Hermod. He fathered Thor on the goddess Jord; and the giantess Grid became the mother of Vidar. logan is more along the lines of ....uhhh well i cant find one that fits really unless you say Heimdall and then you would have to switch Ulrik to Ullr (makes sense to me) leman russ- Vidar- In stanza 17 of Grímnismál, during Odin's visions of various dwelling places of the gods, he describes Víðarr's (here anglicized as "Vidar") residence: Brushwood grows and high grass widely in Vidar's land and there the son proclaims on his horse's back that he's keen to avenge his father meaning russ avenging the Emperor's entombment in the golden throne, at least i think. my 2 cents. liquidbiue
Even though Odin could be the Emperor or Grimnar, Grimnir was a name that Odin used at one point. Njal also has a bit of Odin with the raven, only Odin had two. Leman Russ also has some Odinish stuff, the wolves. I think Russ would probably be Bor and the Emperor would be Buri. EricBasser
Agreed about Russ being Borr. And lol about the spelling. I was thinking of putting the correct spelling, but then thought it should be anglicized. For other people that wouldn't understand what was written. :P Njal does have Odinish traits to him. But I feel that Grimnar trumps Njal for the role of Odin. And with Njord, I think of Sea and Winds, which I also think of then someone has the title Stormcaller. :P Another interesting path would be Jötunn. I could see a 13th Company being based on Jötunn. However, with the Wulfin gone as troops, this might be more difficult. Grey Mage
*shrugs* Not all of the Jotun were bad at all... Ive always been quite fond of the Myths surounding Skadi, though there arent many of them sadly. Actually, my rather small soritas force has alot of the Female gods and spirits and so on as named characters in it. Claydon
Wouldn't Ragnar be Thor to Logan's Odin? Ragnar, weapons aside, is fierce and proud with a pre-disposition to "strike like lightening" using drop pods.
