Ensis Ferrae
Hey B/C, when i first started collecting marines, i made the mistake of buying the Battle Company "box set" from GW. When you see all those boxes in person, it kinda disheartens ya just abit. So, in order to lessen the boredom/monotony of painting a full battle company, ive decided to take a couple squads and rhinos and make a 500 point or so, Iron Snake army. the first set of pics here, is of the first rhino that ive been working on, still a WIP, but i wanted to show ya, and get C/C on it, before i get too much farther along and feel that its done. http://i518.photobucket.com/albums/u344/ensisferrae/Minis/003-3.jpg http://i518.photobucket.com/albums/u344/ensisferrae/Minis/001-4.jpg http://i518.photobucket.com/albums/u344/ensisferrae/Minis/002-3.jpg again, any comments and suggestions for improvement are most welcome and appreciated. hope you enjoy! Melchiah
Looking great so far, like the free-hand snake and sea-dragon work... Know it's W.I.P, so maybe ahead of myself, so assume you've still got the shading to work on? Anyhow, looking forward to seeing some of your Marines! Warmongrel
I think it's looking quite nice. You may wish to paint those exhaust tips/pipes black to set them off from the armor plating. Chronowraith
I love the freehand serpent on the door. Kudos on that! I know you said this Rhino is WIP but here are a few suggestions; The metals need some highlighting and shading. I've found the easiest way to do this to highlight the metals and then do a wash. When applying the wash make sure to draw the wash towards recesses. If you want a little flatter look to your metal mix in some Elmer's glue to the wash to take some of the shine off. As mentioned above you need some weathering on the exhaust stacks to separate them from the other metal of the tank. I'm assuming the red on the doors and the windows isn't done. Looks like it needs a few more coats of red to fill in the base coat. Ensis Ferrae
the "freehand" sea serpent is in fact, a banner topper i had layin around from my DE Corsairs (the fantasy range, not dark space elfs in 40k). i have since painted the exhaust tips black, added some mithril highlights to various spots, and fixed the chapter icon (it was in fact, upside down) also have painted the tracks with a basecoat of Catachan Green, will do something with the treading, etc. later, but as of yet no real plan on that one. CorinoFan
Washes are your friend. Devlan Mud, Badab Black and Gryphonne Sepia would be very useful. If you can get some magic wash use that it sinks right into the cracks and looks really nice. Ferrus Manus
They look good, but I find that with all metallic schemes you need to find something to break up the metal, here you have white, blue and red. If I'm honest they look a bit bland because I think the metallics need to be broken up more or dulled down some how. Maybe a heavy blue and black wash or something? Ensis Ferrae
Tiny update again, been working on backpack banners for the squads, and have a WIP that i am both quite proud of, and not sure where to go, for the goals that i have in mind. http://i518.photobucket.com/albums/u344/ensisferrae/Minis/003-7.jpg What i want to have, eventually is wherever this chapter symbol goes, i want to have the squad name on the banner, which btw, is Elapa. Question is, where should i put the lettering, if anywhere, and what should i do with the snake.. make it solid, leave it hollowed as is, etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/183174-ensis-ferraes-iron-snake-army-blog/#findComment-2215742 Share on other sites
