dooley44
hello pups and puppettes (females) jumping onto the wolf band wagon, and ive seen that you's all show alot of skin, dont get me wrong, skin is a sign of strength, but why show so much skin on all our wolves? is there any fluff behind it? (im a mass lore junkie) love the beards very viking, very norse, new pup dooley Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/183184-skin-skin-and-skinwhy/ Share on other sites
maznaz
One reason might be the influence of norse berserkers, who were believed to have fought naked in some cases. dooley44
i know about the norse berserkers fighting naked, it intimidated the enemy, showing that they do now fear the loss of parts, and do not hide behind heavy plated armor. but if your point is correct, wouldnt there be more space wolves with less and less armor, using only, leg plays and a bolter? Terrahawk
One thing would be our enhanced senses. Hard to fully take advantage of them when you are wearing a metal bucket over your head. :D There are certain situations when the helmets come handy though, such as battlezones with no atmosphere or if you need the extra protection. dooley44
im pretty sure that if the holy astrates helmet has as you said a "metal bucket" im sure NO chapter, nor heretic legion would take them, well heretics would, cause they need extra protection. but i must admit i do like the look of the space wolves without helmets, its the only chapter that ive seen that suites not wearing helmets, it makes the wolves look well...too clean for who they are. on the other hand ultra's suite the close in face helmets. enhanced sences would be difficult to use if you had a box on your head, like you said, so i guess thats also another reason why they wouldnt take them :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/183184-skin-skin-and-skinwhy/#findComment-2166791 Share on other sites
Oldenhaller
from the prologue of wolf's honour it has ragnar describing how he prefers to hear and feel the battle not through his autosenses and is thus unhappy to wear a helm. Where he puts the pony tail is beyond me :D ~O Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/183184-skin-skin-and-skinwhy/#findComment-2166798 Share on other sites

I was kidding. :P The helmets have their uses and I'm fairly certain they can produce information heightened senses cannot, for example tracking heat signatures through the walls. But I'm sure there are also many situations where the Wolves' heightened senses are more efficient. Remember Space Wolves aren't stupid, they will use whatever the situation needs. Now that being said, I like both the helmetless SW and the helmeted SW look very much. That's why I model my packs with an about equal split of both. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/183184-skin-skin-and-skinwhy/#findComment-2166801 Share on other sites
dooley44
you've never grown your hair long, tied it into a topknot and put a motorbike helmet on? i guess im the only one who embraces it, you'd put your hair facing towards your neck in the helmet, out of your eyes, there'd be nothing worse then getting hair in your eyes killing the dark angels or chaos legion's i try and model the squads with troops having helmets, and sargeants (spellcheck?) having bare skin, :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/183184-skin-skin-and-skinwhy/#findComment-2166808 Share on other sites
Uthred Ragnarson
I guess a helmet would also get in the way if they wanted to used their fangs in combat? Well I know that most marines have a poisoned spit, am not sure if that is part of the Wolves make up or not but all the space wolves have fangs, am sure they get used :) Sure I've seen it in fluff somewhere as well against orks if memory serves Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/183184-skin-skin-and-skinwhy/#findComment-2166886 Share on other sites
Loki-LaughingDeath
Ragnar "fanged" an imperial assassin to death at the end of Wolf Blade, so yeah we will chew somebody up and spit them out if the wulfen is in control.... muzzyman1981
Space Wolves do their best NOT to "fang" anyone because it shows a lack of controlling their Wulfen. The main reason for not wearing helmets has already been stated. Because of Wolves' even more heightened sense of smell they prefer not to wear helmets due to the fact they can "communicate" via smell as well as gather information through such means....much like, say, a wolf (imagine that right?). Other Chapters have these means as well but Space Wolves have even more heightened senses. Olgerth Istaarn
Heheh, berserkers did not fight naked, the word itself means "he who wears a coat (or shirt) of bear skin". Unless you count Nord berserkers in Morrowind... I would imagine that, considering that Space Wolves prefer to fight up close, their natural acute senses would work better for them than a helmet's autosenses. Whereas the armor would present you with icons, warning messages and such (which are just fine for a "conventional" Marine), the acute senses would work on instinctual level, producing faster reaction. After all, those instincts were developed while surviving in the wilderness of Fenris! I would also think that the Long Fangs are more likely to wear helmets, as they do not fight up close and instead must carefully pick off targets from a distance (and not accidentally nail their own brothers, who are in the thick of it!). In this case, the armor's targeting assistance would be a boon, rather than a hindrance. Imperialis_Dominatus
As far as I know they've never been noted as not having that organ either. My people were not dumb enough to run around the near arctic in the buff. lacking some clothes.. definatly =P Also. if you read the discription of Mark of the wolven, it talks of getting ovewhelmed by the Wulven and thus scratching and biting at ones foe and gaining rending. sweet=) Yummy xenos Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/183184-skin-skin-and-skinwhy/#findComment-2167148 Share on other sites
muzzyman1981
Yes, that is Mark of the Wulfen, not Space Wolves who are in control of their inner Wulfen.
