Ranged Dreadnaught Spam

So I had an idea recently for trying out some dreads. Originally I had an all drop pod army with 6 dreads (variations of MM, AC w/flamer, and MotF), but have decided the tactic is a bit too unstable for my tastes. Instead I'd like to try out a new strategy focusing more on all ranged dreads:

ex:

3 TL-LC/ ML Dreadnaughts

3 Plasma Cannon/ ML dreads

or swapping the plasma/ML group (yes i realize they are not squaded) with 2 TL-autocannons

Like I said it's just an idea. Naturally the tactics revolve a lot around using MotF's "bolster defenses" for really good cover (hopefully) and him being able to repair. Then using troops to secure objectives/support/etc.

I realize ranged combat in 5th is at a huge disadvantage right now, especially this tactic against AV 14, but I simply can't justify the DCCW atm. Plus with all those instant death shots and blast markers (at least 9 depending on how i run things), how could that possibly be a bad thing? ;)

One last thing, this is obviously not for GT lists, just fun... just thought i'd make that clear.

If you can rely on something else to bust AV14 (like fast moving Melta weapons) then I would use a combination of the Plasma/Missiles and dual Autocannons and leave the more expensive TL Lascannon at home.

The reason is that the other weapons are more multi-taskers, able to hurt a wide variety of targets whereas the TL Lascannon is really only useful against MCs, medium armor and Terminators and only moderately helpful for busting AV14.

This way you could just put free Multi-Meltas and a Meltagun in your Tactical squads for AV14 and maybe support them with some MM Attack Bikes or Speeders.

Now this looks fun! Make them venerable and you'll be a genius! Something in me though says there should be 3 groups of 2, one with assault cannons and MLs, one with TLLCs and MLs and one with whatever you want and ML/ACs. Sounds like a fun idea though, might just steal it from you one day when I get a further 4 dreads :P
the only problem with the venerables idea is that your using up points that could be used for more dreads

2 venerables= about 3 regular dreads

And guess which one I'd rather have.

Or put another way, would you rather fight 2 Ven. Dreads or 3 normal Dreads?

With medium armor units like Dreads, I think you have to rely on armor saturation to keep them alive.

and and 3 dreads equal 2 venerables. Ofcourse they are worth that but it's a rather decent ratio if you look at what you get: sacrifice one dread to give both other dreads better WS and BS plus being harder to kill without concentrating fire on them. I personally believe normal dreads are too fragile, then again in my heart I have field my 2 faithful dreads in more engagements than my land raiders and they have forever been a successful duo so I feel it's right to honour the models spirit with such a thing. Come on, you know you want to just level your opponent with BS5 heavy weapon goodness! (it will be said you can't get any better on armour in alot of armies, if not none!)

Let it be said though I do have fluff in me so I field my 2 usual dreads as venerables, if I got 2 new ones they would be normal ones (Been looking at the venerable dreadnoughts in forgeworld, been considering giving my two faithful dreads an upgrade in looks) but personally I'll never get ironclad, such a silly idea (tasty looking on paper but not too good in practice). Anyway before I ramble on any further! (better get that killa kan painted for that competition!)
