White Hunter
Are librarians necessary for competitive play? The title pretty much asks it, how necessary are librarians/psychic hoods in a competitive army build? Chengar Qordath
You can definately survive without them; there are lots of lists out there with no psykers in them, and several armies that can't take psykers at all. A Hood is a useful tool, but hardly a required one. Grey Mage
Psychic powers are very hit or miss with both their power level and application. Id say its a luxury- one Im always happy to have, and psychics in general make a great support HQ. But as noted, many lists dont have access to psychers, let alone hoods- and they still win games. glayvin34
Librarians are great and fun, but they don't do anything that other units can't do for a similar price and maybe more survivability. Having psychic artillery is great, but there some vehicles that do a fine job of that, like the aforementioned vindicator or even whirlwind, depending on the armor save and hordiness of the enemy. Powers like Gate of Infinity are also good, but if you've already got transports for your army then it's not worth the hit-or-miss movement that GoI grants. And the psychic hood itself is a nice piece of wargear, but you have to commit your Librarian to going after the other psyker(s) when he would probably be better in a role fighting weaker infantry where he isn't in danger of being killed by said psyker(s). I've only played 20-30 40k games, and I can safely say that removing a element of your army that you thought you NEEDED is a great experiment. If you always play with a Libby, take him out and see how the game goes. Probably pretty much the same as when the Libby was part of the force. A single unit shouldn't win or lose the game. And if it does, kill it. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/183269-surviving-without-a-physic-hood/#findComment-2167552 Share on other sites

Giga
It depends on your local metagame. Are many players using psykers where you play? Are there plenty of lash lists? Eldar lists? Space marines who like to gate their sternguard? If the answer is yes, then a librarian is a very useful addition. If not, then there's really no reason to bother with it. I agree with this for the most part. I know in my local meta, having a Hood is HUGE. If you're just looking for a cheap hood, just buy a barebones DH Inquisitor Lord with Mystics. You get an unlimited range hood and anti-deepstrike for fewer points. That or even a Brother Captain (81 points with hood I think). ;) However, Libbys are also good for things besides the Hood. Null Zone is often a nice thing to have, and many of the other powers can fill roles in your army too. I wouldn't try to shoehorn anything in just for a Hood... try and find a character with a Hood that can also help your army in other ways. minigun762
Alot of the more powerful abilities require the target to either be a non-vehicle or not in a transport, so I feel that going mechanized goes a long way to resisting some of the less friendly powers like Lash and Jaws. Chucku
Psychic Hoods weren't all that great when they effected the whole board and have really lost stock with their paltry 24" range now, IMHO.
