Considering how to kit out my Wolf Lord

Brand new about-to-be-a Space Wolf player. Planning out my army now.

Part of the appeal here is that he'll be riding a wolf. (How awesome is that?) Though, riding a wolf I either get to give him some wolfie fast cav (very expensive) or Fenresian Wolves (cheap soakers of bullets, but something tells me a single template will wipe them out if I'm not careful at keeping them spread out). So, I'm hoping I can keep them spread out and thus he'll have 80 pts worth of cheap extra wounds...not to mention some vicious CC support from the ones that survive to close.

So, here we go..

Wolf Lord - 245

Belt of Russ (I feel this is almost necessary as he doesn't come with an Iron Halo; or I might take a Storm Shield instead for a few more pts)

Wolftooth Necklace (Very nice for HQ hunting, but this is probably some points I could drop as he's WS 6)

Wolf Tail Talisman (so cheap it feels worth it?)

Thunderwolf Mount (makes an already vicious CC fighter even more scary)

Saga of the Warrior Born (omg is this awesome to me; not optional imo <3 for fluff and nerd reasons)

Frost Axe (also for fluff, but it seems like it'd be really effective)

8 Fenrisian Wolves with one Cyberwolf - 72 points ... possibly more wolves? But 8 feels like a good number.

I think I could keep him (and the wolves) in cover behind Rhinos on their way across the board. Also, I'm going to field two Lone Wolves with a few wolves (negative kill points for the win ;) to ride in and support/counter charge for him.

give him 2x wolf claws instead I think. belt is fine, but if you load up on Fensrisian wolves instead you'll never need it. Cyber wolf isn't worth it in a unit like this (only with the IP I think).

frost axe is nice instead, but the reroll-ability from the WC when he'll be S5 already from the wolf seems worth it.

geez, I walked into my local GW store and this kid's Wolf Lord blew me away.. I was just like woah, that guy is a monster! which got me thinking if its legal or a little overkill?!

Wolf Lord 255pts

Frost Axe

Storm Shield

Runic Armour

Wolf Tooth Necklace

2 Fenrisian Wolves

Mark of the Wulfen

Saga of the Warrior Born

This setup is legal but stupid. you can't use the benefits of special close combat weapons ehen you have mark of the wulfen. so it makes no sense to give a wolf lord both, he would have payed the points for the frost weapon without beeing able to use it..

aye that's what I thought and said to the kid, and he said that he wanted that extra strength if he didn't get any rending hits done. He also mentioned maybe dropping the 2 Fenrisian Wolves and adding either a Jump Pack or Space Marine Bike for that added T(5). I was like geez! what got to me was the saga... would it stack to his Mark of the Wulfen D6+1 attack?

The saga would stack...but what do you mean "he said that he wante the extra strength if he didn't get any rending hits done"?

He has to call whether he's using Mark OR the Frost Axe at the start of the CC phase, before any rolling is done. He can't roll for rending hits at his normal strength then just add +2 str to it if he didn't get any 6s. =P

actually its +1str for the Frost Weapon. I'm sure that's what he meant with his attacks if he didn't get any rending, using the Frost Weapon as an added str even if he wasn't using it. He was setting up for a game at the store and I figured the best way to learn is hands on instead of some bystander tell him the rules LOL

Ah, yes, I'm sorry. I was confusing the additional +1 str that my proposed HQ will get for sitting on a wolf; the whole "Relic Blade"-thing from my DIY codex chapter has me in +2 str land.

d6+1 attacks, a max of 7, why would anyone put this on a wolf lord? he already has 4

No... mark of the Wulfen specificly states you cant use any wargear with it... and guess where you find the rules for the Frostblade? The wargear section.

Kid probly wasnt trying to cheat, as wargear is traditionally non-weapon items you carry... but thats how it goes these days.

That being said Saga of the Warrior born grants one bonus attacks... and MotW says you get your normal bonus attacks *for charging, sacred relics, etc* so yes, it can stack with MotW.

I agree with those who say that putting MotW on your WL is a waste of points.
