ChainsawDR
"You look concerned Hangst, have a seat and tell an old rune priest what's troubling you old friend" "We've been tracking them for 9 days and we are yet to bring them to battle, the Eldar are being guided well. I fear we may not be able to hold them to the eastern front" Kelvig smiled grimly, the rune priests eyes glazing as he recalled a far away time and place before returning to the present. "I have been contemplating the same thing, however today I felt the presence of a foe that I have not felt for over a century - an Autarch of great power. The last time we met, his forces overran the garrison of Omark 3 - causing the Imperium to lose its grip on that whole system - regaining it caused the death's of many of our kin." Hangst the wolf priest watched the old rune priest pull himself to his feet with a groan, not fooled for a moment by the apparent struggle - it is a guise that Kelvig has presented for centuries - underestimating his speed and strength has led many an enemy to their death. Kelvig continued, "Our thoughts collided in the warp today, the Eldar are trying to change the destiny of this sector, and they can only do so with our imminent removal. We do not need to worry any longer of bringing them to battle - gather your young pups Hangst, our enemy shall meet us on the battlefield before this day is over" Space Wolves Rune Priest Kelvig with LL and JotWW leading... 5 GH with PG Wolf Priest Hangst with Combi-M & Jump Pack leading... 7x Skyclaws with PF & MoW Iron Priest with WTN, Thunderwolf Mount & 4 Cyberwolves Lone Wolf with MoW 9 GH with MG, PW, Rhino, WG with PF 9 GH with MG, PW, Rhino, WG with WC Pred with AC & 2 LCs 5 Long Fangs with 4xML & WG with Boltgun Landspeeder with MM Landspeeder with MM Eldar Autarch with Jetbike & Lance 3x Shining Spears with Lances 10x Fire Dragon & Wave Serpent & Tank Hunter & Exarch 10x Dire Avengers & Wave Serpent with Bladestorm 10x Dire Avengers & Wave Serpent with Bladestorm 10x Striking Scorion & Exarch 3x Dark Reaper Spearhead/Table Quarters Deployment, Annihilation/Kill Points. My opponent won the roll to deploy and chose that I went first. From where I was standing, in the far left corner was some ruins, in the far right a broken/open building. In the close right corner was nothing really, and in the close left corner (my deployment zone) was two small broken/open buildings. We agreed all terrain offered 4+ cover saves and was difficult terrain. I deployed my Long Fangs on top of a broken building with good lines of sight to my opponents table edge. My small GH and Rune Priest Kelvig deployed in the other broken building, with the Plasma gun and Kelvig having good lines of sight across the board. My Pred was deployed at the back with the next best LOS to my enemy’s board edge. Everything else was as far forward as they could possibly go, with my Iron Priest and wolves lining up first, with Rhinos slightly behind who would overtake and shield them on Turn 1. My game plan was to get into combat quickly, with the onrushing forces distracting my opponent from the Long Fangs and Predator who would be needed to demobilise his highly mobile army. A land speeder held each flank. I declared that Wolf Priest Hangst and his Skyclaws are to have preferred enemy against infantry. My opponent elected to keep his entire force in reserve with the exception of his Dark Reapers who were deployed hidden from view behind a building in the far right corner of the board, with his Striking Scorpions Outflanking when they joined. I presumed his plan was to bring his whole force to bear on a single point of my army, and stay mobile - but I was happy that my army could close to his board edge for two of my turns before being targeted properly. Space Wolves Turn 1. I didn't want either land speeder in the open come Eldar turn 2 so the Land speeder on the right flank flew forward to gain cover from a building in my opponents table half. The left land speeder pulled back behind the ruins with Kelvig and small GH unit. Long Fangs spend the turn checking their weapons, both Rhino's travelled 12" forward, as do Wolf Priest Hangst and his Skyclaws - who were heading towards the ruins in the far left side of the board. Eldar Turn 1 Dark Reapers fired their no LOS, S5, AP3 Small Blast Weapon at Wolf Priest Hangst and his Skyclaws, causing two AP3 wounds - I remove a skyclaw and decide to try to save the 2nd wound using Hangst's 4++ save - rolling a 1 (down to 1 wound). Space Wolves Turn 2 Both Land speeders, Long fangs, Kelvig and small GH squad remained still. Skyclaws and Hangst jump packed to the edge of the terrain as they didn’t want to risk landing there. Both Rhino's travelled another 12" forward, splitting slightly to go left and right into the only avenues open. The Iron Priest and Lone wolf carried on travelling forward but were painfully slow in comparison, and were only halfway across the board! The sky claws and Hangst successfully ran into the ruins, the Thunderwolf Iron Priest, and lone wolf ran another 2" and 4" forward. At this stage I was happy, I had two squads of Grey Hunters in Rhino's, both of whom should be able to disembark and charge the enemy next turn should they survive my opponents turn. Hangst and the Skyclaws should also be within easy charge range should they survive the Eldar turn. With all of them being so close to my enemy - my Pred, Kelvig and Long Fangs should be free to cause damage from afar. Eldar Turn 2 I'd forgotten to pop smoke on the Rhino's, bugger! Oh well too late now. My opponent rolled for reserves and got everything bar the Autarch, this was going to hurt! Wave Serpents came onto the board on my left, in the centre, and on the right. The shining spears lined up on my Rhino going down the centre. The Fire Dragons disembarked in sight of the Rhino on my left, and a unit of dire avengers disembarked between both my Rhinos and infront of Hangst and his Skyclaws, allowing them to be able to fire upon any 3 units. The Wave serpent on my right lined up on my land speeder partially hidden behind a building. My opponent rolled for outflank for his Striking Scorpions and got the board edge on my left, and moved on the board right behind my landspeeder, Kelvig and small GH squad (a complete oversight on my part - they should have been moved out of charge range of the board edge). In the shooting phase the Dark Reapers fired on the Skyclaws and killed another two Skyclaws as the S5, AP3 blast weapon also disallows cover saves, which I did not realise! The shining lances fire knocked the storm bolter off the Rhino and stunned it, whilst the fire dragons destroyed the storm bolter and shook the left Rhino. With neither Rhino spilling troops, the dire avengers blade stormed Hangst and his Skyclaws in the ruins, as well as both nearby Wave Serpents opening fire on the same unit - Hangst and his Skyclaws perished without even drawing their weapons. The wave serpent on my right targeted, and pentrated my landspeeder, rolling a 6 on the damage chart - however I passed my 4+ cover save from being mostly obscured behind a building. Assault phase. The shining lances successfully immobilised the Rhino in my centre, and the striking scorpions proceeded to charge the land speeder and small Grey Hunter squad with Kelvig. The Land speeder was wrecked, 2 of the 5 Grey Hunters killed, and a wound taken on the Rune Priest before I could even respond. With only Kelvig and 3 Grey Hunters left, they responded by killing two striking scorpions and remained locked in combat - with the future looking grim for the next turn when counter attack would not boost any of their attacks. Space Wolves Turn 3 Both squads of Grey Hunters disembarked, the centre squad surrounding the shining spears, the left squad moving close to the fire dragons whilst the Rhino advanced and turned sideways to block the Dire Avengers LOS to the Grey Hunters, allowing their battle some privacy and saving them from Dire Avenger fire next turn if they won the battle. The Lone wolf moved towards the shining spears but falled short of charge range due to a poor terrain roll. The Iron Priest looked back at the injured Kelvig in trouble and halted his advance, then moved back towards the rune priest in an attempt to cover the 20" distance and stop the slaughter. The remaining land speeder moved into the open to target the wave serpent on the right, whilst the predator rotated to target the wave serpent on the left. The long fangs had a clear view to the centre and right wave serpents. In the shooting phase the land speeder failed to penetrate the wave serpent on the right flank, whilst the grey hunters in the centre fired bolt pistols at the shining spears and reduced their number by one. The grey hunters on the left did the same to the Fire Dragons, also reducing their number by 1. The Long Fangs split fired at the centre and right wave serpents, exploding the centre transport whilst missing the right one. The Predator lined up its autocannon and both Lascannons on the left wave serpent and wrecked it. Assault Phase - The Iron Priest had rolled a 3 for its run move in the shooting phase, and smashed his thunderwolf and cyber wolves into the striking scorpion lines in a 12" charge. The Initiative 5 striking scorpions had slain another 2 Grey Hunters before 3 Scorpions fell to the Iron Priests thunder hammer, another to his servo arm, two more to the cyber wolves, and another scorpion to Kelvigs power weapon. Panicked by the Iron monster within their ranks they fell back. The centre Grey Hunter squad quickly killed the 2 shining spears to the loss of a man, and consolidated towards the remaining wave serpent on my right, containing a full dire avengers squad. With their Rhino immobilised, they have to get there on foot. The left Grey Hunter squad charged and killed 6 Fire Dragons (2 by the Wolf Guard's Wolf Claw) whilst losing 2 men in return before remaining locked in combat. Eldar Turn 3 Panicked by the damage caused by the Iron Priest the remaining Striking Scorpions continued to flee, only to find themselves trapped by the Grey Hunters ahead of them - causing their immediate deaths. The dire avengers disembarked from the Wave Serpent on the right flank and lined up on the centre Grey Hunter squad. The Jet biking Autarch passed his reserve roll and joined the 4 remaining Fire Dragons on the left in combat with the Grey Hunters. Shooting phase - The remaining wave serpent Stunned the land speeder, whilst the blade storm of the disemberked dire avengers reduced the Central Grey Hunter squad to 6 men, before they were reduced to 5 by dark reaper fire. Assault Phase - The Autarch killed 2 Grey Hunters before the Grey Hunters responded with 3 Fire dragon kills of their own. Perhaps distracted by the survival of his old enemy the Rune Priest, the Autarch failed his leadership test and fled towards their table edge (falling 3" short). The Dire Avengers on the right charged the 5 strong grey hunter squad and reduced them to 3, whilst losing 3 in response. Combat remained locked. Space Wolves Turn 4 Seeing the Eldar Autarch and remaining Fire Dragon only 3" away from his board edge the left Grey Hunter squad moved closer to make sure they fled the following turn, whilst the Rhino pulled back to allow them LOS to the Dire Avengers slightly left of centre. Kelvig, the remaining Plasma gunner Grey Hunter, Iron Priest and cyber wolves all advanced forward whilst the lone wolf readied to join the combat with the dire avengers. Unable to draw LOS to the remaining Wave Serpent, the Predator moved 12" forward so it could the next turn. Shooting - The Long Fangs fired all 4 Missile Launchers at the remaining Wave Serpent but could only manage to stun it. The grey hunters helping the Autarch and fire dragons flee the board opened fire on the other Dire Avenger squad who lost 3 troops. Kelvig fired living lightning at the same group who lost another 2 troops, failed their morale test, and then fled the board due to the edge's close proximity. Assault - In the centre/right, the Dire Avengers killed another Grey Hunter in combat. Having something that reduces attacks by 1, the frustrated grey hunters could only land one unsaved wound before the lone wolf caused another 2 wounds from 5 MotW attacks. The combat remained locked for another turn. Eldar Turn 4 Rolling a double 1, the Autarch and Fire Dragons just managed to stay on the board for another turn, which would keep the left Grey Hunter squad pinned to that corner and unable to help the Grey Hunters on the right. The Dark Reapers fired but missed the Grey Hunters in the left squad. The wave serpent was stunned so couldn’t do anything, the combat continued into its third assault phase between the Grey Hunters, Lone Wolf and Dire Avengers in the centre – the victory eventually going to the Wolves thanks to a Lone Wolf kill and a power fist kill by the WG that led to a sweeping advance. Space Wolves Turn 5 The Long Fangs exploded the remaining Wave Serpent, which then caused the death of a Dark Reaper thanks to the 6” explosion. Everything bar the Grey Hunters sheparding the Autarch off the board moved and ran forward to try and draw a LOS to the two remaining Dark Reapers hidden in the far corner. Eldar Turn 5 The Autarch & Fire Dragons fled the board, then my opponent moved his remaing dark reapers off the board too, conceding defeat. A resounding victory to the wolves! “How is Hangst?” asked a concerned Kelvig. “He’s already recovering as we speak, as are his skyclaws” replied the young wolf priest. “They ask for stories of the battle – having seen so very little of it”. Kelvig grinned, showing the full length of his fangs before slapping the young wolf priest generously on the back and moving past him, “well then, go get the ale, young wolf priest, and join us, there is a glorious story to be told - and go fetch that Iron Priest as well, he deserves to hear this tale!” Kelvig shouted after the young wolf priest. Reflection: I feel that my opponents decision to keep his forces in reserve was a mistake, it allowed my troops to advance dangerously close and allowed my heavies to disable his transports, which was the key to his army. At first I was doubting the Iron Priest as he was struggling to cross the board, however the 20” charge was truly the best moment of the match, and certainly saved the Rune Priest. I did get lucky with the Autarch failing his leadership test, however I believe this would have not have changed the result of the battle, only the margin of victory. The army list and game plan worked well - the Predator and Long Fangs were not shot at once and removed the enemies mobility. I was disappointed at the loss of the Wolf Priest and Sky Claws so early on – it was a lot of points to lose, but I will stick with them as they do have the 12” movement that I need in my army. The Land speeders were disappointing, therefore I think I will reduce their number to one and keep it in reserve – with the aim being to deep strike it and perform the suicide tank hunter role that the old wolf scouts used to perform in the old codex. I’m still to decide on what to spend the 60pts from this on, perhaps either beefing up the 5 man Grey hunters (which are for objective based missions) or making the sky claws more durable. I hope you enjoyed my first battle report, it’s my first full game of 40k for over 10 years (I played two games at my LGS a few months ago but never finished due to lack of time). I found my old SW army in the attic last Christmas and have been painting it up since then. It was really good fun and I don’t think I’ll wait that long before playing again. Next time I'll try and take some pics, but if anyone knows of a good battle report diagram maker (like used to appear in old white dwarfs) then please let me know. Draketh Firewind
Yes very fun except he dupped you with something, the Tempest Laucher is only a strength 4 weapon not strength 5 also the whole ingoring covers saves is crackshot exarch power so not the weapon it's self but still a great game was played and I think that it would of been awesome to play in, so well played! An ale to you! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/183543-eldar-vs-space-wolves/#findComment-2170904 Share on other sites
ChainsawDR
Yeah nice report, good win, has that person won many games? his list just doesn't seem strong enough for me....... He wins most of his games (he came 2nd at a recent LGS tourney) however I dont know if its with this list or not, he was previously running a list with Fire Prisms and Wraithguard as troop choice. the Tempest Laucher is only a strength 4 weapon not strength 5 also the whole ingoring covers saves is crackshot exarch power so not the weapon it's self It may be the case that I'm remembering it wrong, but its g ood to know and I'll keep that in mind next time I come up against them. Cheers for the feedback guys, I'm glad you found the report fun. Anyone know how to do the diagrams I mentioned in the OP? Wolf Guard Hengist
I like that you used an Iron Priest on a Thunderwolf! I think this unit has been overlooked by many and it is soon to be fielded in my lists in the near future, a very nicely written Batrep which kept me interested despite no pictures. **Hands over an Ale** Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/183543-eldar-vs-space-wolves/#findComment-2171392 Share on other sites
Bartali
Yeah nice report, good win, has that person won many games? his list just doesn't seem strong enough for me....... Agreed, some units I wouldn't of picked, some squad size problems (some too little, some too big), and no Farseer is always instant fail :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/183543-eldar-vs-space-wolves/#findComment-2171547 Share on other sites
Wolf Guard Nostromo
A nice win and good report. I agree with your assessment that your opponents reserve all was a mistake - he had a fairly effective force but it sounds like it came at you from all angles rather than classic eldar skimmer 'annihilate and move' which involves much more concentrated fire. I also think autarchs are overated... a farseer with guide and doom would have really augmented his firepower... Nevertheless, always good to hear of winning tactics... congrats Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/183543-eldar-vs-space-wolves/#findComment-2171626 Share on other sites
