you need to go substantially brighter with your highlights on the head...right now the problem will be that you dont have enough range of value to work with when you hit the shadows, so your shadowed areas will end up being without highlights, and thus seem almost flat

The iron priest looks like he's coming along pretty well. I too know how aggravating the cold can be. I can't undercoat anything just now cause it's -3 degrees outside and we've got about 6-7" of snow on the ground ;).

Good luck with the drop pod when you get around to it, both of mine are still half assemble/painted cause they're a bit frustrating to paint once fully built. Never, ever follow GW instructions without thinking through the consequences first :)

Haha, thats what we had for weeks, its finally melted off, and risen to 60(F).

Im redoing the helmet as stated in the post.

Ok heres another quick update. Due to poor planning and slacking on my part, this was the first grey model Iv'e ever painted, and ever done any highlighting on. As a result I have been screwing up again and again on the paint. So, to prevent any further accidents, I'm going to be testing my painting on another model.

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo353/caj007/40k221.jpg

-Said model. I'm testing going darker with the grey, but I think I will keep the majority of the armor the same as that as the top of the helmet. To allow to keep edges highlighted, and shadows darker on the helmet, Ive gone to a lighter grey, 50/50 Chaos Black and Adeptus Battle Grey, which is in the models hair. I plan to have the models hair look black, and have the edges just starting to grey, which I plan to do using multiple coats of Budab Black, I am hoping that this method will work, and be able to be applied to the helmet.

-Foundation paints are really great, as with a little water, they go on smooth, and make for good solid colors. If you use Adeptus Battle Grey as the darkest paint in the blend, it makes for a light grey, and the opposite is true for it being your lightest, which is what I have been experimenting with.

Okay, looks like time for a little thread dominance :D

So, this is what Ive gotten done on the test model tonight; face base-coated w/ Tallarn Flesh, silver metals with first coat of Boltgun Metal, and his hair: painted 50/50 Adeptus Battlegrey and Chaos Black, then highlighted with pure Adeptus Battlegrey, and washed with multiple coats of Badab Black, and I think it makes a good black, but I will do more blending on the IP's helmet.

I plan on devoting as much time as possible to getting this model finished, and painted. I am growing more confident with my painting skills (tabletop quality that is) , and I believ that my Space Wolves will be my first army (or whole squad :) ) to be painted to a reasonable level, or at all for that matter :D !

Again, as I say in every post I've added, any opinions or comments are welcome. :D

you need to highlight drastically more, its still nowhere near bright enough, you can barely see it

here are some examples for you...this should help you visualize the brighter highlights

I have also decided to give him the plasma pistol from the test model because its the best silver Ive ever painted, but unfortunately it doesnt show well in the pictures either.

And here is a quick sketch Ive drawn. Its supposed to be another Iron Priest for Engir Krakendooms company. I couldnt quite draw everything I had in mind, its supposed to have a beard and hair made out of mechadendrites (the long mechanical cables/tentacles you see on tech priest) coming from behind the massk, which is supposed to look like a kraken (inspired by the dark elf model).

I know its not much progress but what do you think? :D

I have done some more work finally, but its not enough to warrant taking pictures of. I have tried some dry-brushing, which I seem to be terrible at, I applied some to the helmet and the legs, the head still looks much better though :P .Due to my lack of skills and experience, I don' think I will be entering, but unlike every other one of my models, I will finish him, that is a promise -_- . So thanks to all of you who have posted thoughts and suggestions

I guess I will post pictures when he is done.

So here are some pics of what I've done. After remembering that iron priests are from the great wolf's company, I decided to paint the left shoulder, and other places dark blue. The dark blue is in an alternating pattern with the red on th model, as in blue shoulder and hand, and red elbow and knee on one side and vice versa on the other. Ive been trying to dry-brush and blend but to no a avail, only fail.........

So without further a due, the pictures.

Okay, so heres what I got done tonight, in 25 minutes exactly in fact (I timed it :D) I've done some more dry-brushing, and I think I'm doing better, as it doesn't look that bad in person. I have decided to paint the lenses Hawk Turquoise, as I thought it contrasted nicely with the other colors. I have most of the blue done, I still have to finish the reds and metallics, as well as clean up, and later weather the grey. *The pictures where taken with flash*

Let me know what you think.

Looking good so far, the project is going along well.

Thanks Capt.

No pics, I again havent done enough to warrant them, but I have made a little progress on the Iron Priest, and Im debating what to do with the base. As side projects, I have started working on the space hulk minis I bought a while ago.

I would mod the legs for the IronPriest a bit - something like the blocky / square legs of the TechMarine... a little GS should do the trick, and maybe some cable dreads out the back of the wolfhelm... incidentally thats a great name for your IronPriest:

Magnus Wolfhelm

or

Magnus Wolfsmith

Thanks for the comments and advice. I will not be adding cables or GS to the priest this late in time, and this was and is, really just my first model testing and using paints to get what I wanted for the right colors and stuff. I definitely plan to go much more in-depth on my next iron priest, which I plan to mount on a thunderwolf, in fact I plan on making many more wolves in the future, as I have decided to go with Harald Deathwolf's great company, which is always escorted into battle by all manner of lupine beasts.

So here is a pic of my entry into the LPC

And here is a space hulk sgt. I have started wolfying
