Beating the vampires - Dante & Corbulo

I gave my new wolves their first game against a good friend of mine who is a vet blood angel player. I decided to throw tactics out the window and simply charge into the melee and see what happened. A bloody battle royal.

I used 4 squads of grey hunters with a mix of melta, wulfen, and power weapons. With a strong fast attack element lead by wolf lord with frost blade and bear saga. A sprinkling of 8 wolf guard (5 TDA with assault cannon), backed by 2 rune priests with living lighting, hurricane and jaws of the wolf.

In a bout of stupidity I gave him the charge, the blood claw in me gunning right into the jaws. It didnt end well.

But my tomfoolery aside, the BA are still a really tough opponent for wolves young and long of fang. The combo of dante with tooled up honor guard, and corbulos magic cup makes a red face palm to the chops. Re-rolls with preferred enemy and WS draining mask, along with sanguinary priests negative saves. Then there is the charge so furious, and the death company.

I was toying with builds that would win the battle of wolves vs vampires. Divide and conquer is the answer to taking apart their bubble, but thats difficult when said duo have a whole force around them. I thought maybe Ragnar, even 15 heavy bolters spread over 3 long fang squads. Also Thunderwolves.

What would you take for sure if you knew you were facing Dante and Corbulo?? besides garlic.

We'll you haven't been to specific on what he runs. - LR with Croblo? Baal Preditors? All Marines with Jump Packs?

Now, if you're wanting advice on how to take him purely in H+h here's some -

Ragnar. If you're running a LR Redeemer or Crusader, he's awesome with 10 Grey Hunters and a 100pt Wolf Priest. - You now re-roll as well, and if you are tactically sound, he should not get the charge on the squad. - If he has some melta make sure when he gets in range you are smoked for some help otherwise the day will go from bad to worse.

So, Ragnar, Grey Hunters with PP, 2xMG, Banner, and PW. - Use the banner first thing for re-rolls on 1's to wound. You're WG should have a PF so you can assure he will wound and can even take out a character with every hit.

Numbers are you're friend in a sense. I know this sounds nuts but JP Honor Guard are not cheap at all.

That being said, Power Weapons where ever you can get them. - Fists are overkill. WC, FB all great.

Now if you really want to trounce him, make sure you can take out his mobility, or use it against him. - If you can't out manouver him, make him do it himself. - A cunning wolf is patient... and increasingly deadly.

Give him something to go for, or sacrifice a unit that you know he can take out quickly, but is still juicy enough to draw attention. - A LR Redeemer with a Cheap unit in it will look very appealing to him and may even survive if he goes for it. (While you have your heavy hitters nearby to clean him up.) - If you play enough points, 2 LR would be great. Otherwise, one as a WG transport will go really far. Then LF (3 PC, 2 HB to take wounds first, and cheapen up the unit) and I daresay 2 vindicators will make quick work of Honor Guard and DC.

In the end Low AP rounds from mid-Lond distance will hurt him if you can stave him even just 2 turns. If you feel this will be difficult, hiding in transports and moving quickly may suffice if you can get rid of some of his melta. (JoTWW)

Just be tactically sound and you will take him in H+H. - If he hits harder than you due to your list or army constraints then pick him apart before he gets there, and cleanup when he does. If you have all things at your disposal then Hiding in vehicles or running Cav units would take away his speed advantage and let you have more decision on what charges happen and when.

- Running Cannnis with Lots of wolves is awesome. If you get the charge the wolves will hit first and take him out really well. - Especially if you're running a Wolf Lord on a wolf with a FB and Warrior Born. - His attacks will start to get really high. Beware the Baal Preditors and Whirlwinds though. - Kill the WW first, then the Baal. Some Lascannons wouldn't be to bad for this, though usually I preffer melta, lascannons against Blood Angels is probably a better alternative .

The Wolves will need cover if he has anything long rang. - Run behind tanks.

In the end play it a lot like Nyds with less numbers, more power weapons and less armor. So, to sum all this up, pick him apart from a distance, buy low AP Assault weapons and guns, and you decide what charges happen and where. If you do that, you will win assuming you don't completely ignore the objectives.
