Spare any change? .....2p or 2c would do...

Well I've been playing around with my army list for the last week or so after decided to switch which great company I've been working towards for the last 2 years. I originally went for Harald Deathwolf's great company, but seeing as they now have printed fluff for him riding a big wolf, I decided it was no longer to my taste. Enter Mr. S. Bloodhowl.

If you've read the passage for Bloodhowl, it basically puts him down as a tattooed combat monster. Right up my street really. It's why I play Wolves and how I enjoy games of 40k, with axes and chainswords clashing. Now, I've come up with two builds which I think can best suit his character and I was wondering if anyone had tried either of them out already. I generally try to build a list based around a theme, rather than simply min-maxing everything to win at all costs.

1st Build: - what I'd probably call an optimal build (good in game, not a 'fun' or 'fluffy' character)

Wolf Lord

Runic Armour

Frost Axe

Meltabombs

Saga of the Warrior Born

Belt of Russ

Total = 205 points

Pros:

6 S5 PW attacks - not counting the saga

2+/4+ inv. save

Cons:

Fairly expensive for 1 model

2nd Build: - my more 'fun' idea

Wolf Lord

Mark of the Wulfen

Saga of the Warrior Born

Meltabombs

Belt of Russ

Wolf Tooth Necklace?

Total = 190 points (180 without necklace)

Pros:

3-8 Rending attacks on the charge - not counting bonus from saga

I'd say would fit him better fluff-wise: Random amount of attacks as if he's a beserker when he gets into combat.

Cheaper points wise

4+ inv.

Cons:

No power weapon attacks

Still S4

Possibly unreliable if you roll low on attacks.

Now, I know it might be better to give the MoW build a storm shield, as it won't affect his attack number, but it might end up making him too expensive. I plan on having him in a transport until he can leap out and into your opponent's face anyway.

Let me know what you think guys.

*Shrugs* I dont think the 15pts is worth going from a Frostblade to MotW- and just because hes wolfbitten doesnt mean hes always beserk- after all, isnt that partiall represented by having twice the base attacks of a Wolfgaurd?

MOW on a wolf Lord is a bad investment. you have the possibility of getting 2-7 attacks with with the Mark. A wolf Lord has 5 bas and with 2 CC weps thats 6. A far better average andf you would not be relying on rolls of a 6 to negate armor.

Fluff purposes semms nice but you would be waisting the points on a Lord. A Battle leader would be better suited to have the Mark but not the Lord.

The build with the MoW may be a better fluff option, but is a bad idea for overall effectiveness. Rending is cool, but only applies to any 6's rolled when trying to Wound, which will only happen with about 11% of his total attacks. Otherwise, the vast majority of his attacks will be no different than as if he were using a Chainsword. A HQ choice that allows Armor Saves in close combat is extremely weak. A Grey Hunter with a Power Fist would get more average kills against MEQs than your Wolf Lord.

Just for your consideration.

If I remember I recommended someone who wanted to represent Redmaw, and wondered if he had to take MotW for fluff reasons, take saga of the warrior born, to represent himself building up into a frenzy as the slaughter continues.

I think it's justifiable for a lord to still have some composure over himself even if he carries the mark otherwise he wouldn't be leading.

If Sagas count as wargear then SotWB might not stack with MotW either as it states 'these attacks are made using...claws and teeth and hence are not affected by wargear, additional hand weapons and so on'. No reason it shouldn't but if they are wargear then it that line suggests it shouldn't work which is a shame for the characterfuness of your build.

I wouldn't say a saga counts as wargear personally, as its not on the wargear page, and just doesn't fit it. I say stick with th first lord, as he has a higher average of attacks, higher strength, and doesn't need only 6s to ignore armour, which fost blade does for a living.

If you are going for a fluffy lord, then the second is definately in need of a hair cut, but for game wise, the first one performs better.
