Potential 10 man CSM squad with heavy weapon tactics

I was thinking, if the heavy weapons in 10 man chaos space marine squads are so cheap, why not use them? Build the squad like normal, but then throw in the heavy weapon, like a 10 pt missile launcher. Instead of having the squad being a sitting duck to fire the heavy weapon, make it do its regular business, essentially "ignoring" the heavy weapon.

 

When turns 5 and 6 come around, the squad will be whittled down. At this point, camp on objectives, and use that heavy weapon again. Having <4 immobile marines as a firebase then is nice, since with the heavy weap you could knock out any leftover squads/vehicles.

 

Problems I see with this is that you lose the 2nd special weapon, since you have taken the heavy weapon instead. You also lose that marine's bolter, as you swap it out for the heavier weapon: this is a minor loss, since you still have the pistol. Also, if your enemy has functional tanks at the later turns, you're probably doing something wrong.

 

I dont know, is CHEAP heavy weapon (with the loss of a 2nd special weapon) worth it to have a good punch at the end of the game?

I think it is nice to have the HW firing from the get go and that is definitely the state of mind of nearly all players, I would guess.

 

However, give it a go. It could work and be it's worth it's weight in gold. Just because others don't do it doesn't mean you shouldn't try....

Not really, the heavy weapon doesn't synergize with the rest of the unit. Most of the time marine troops are going to be fighting within 12 inches of the enemy and will benefit much more from the special weapons than heavies. If you're just camping objectives at the end of the the game then you're not going to need long range fire power, especially if you've taken out most tanks already. You'll need to worry about an enemy unit coming in and blasting or assaulting you off the objective. In which case they'll have to come within twelve inches of you and into the optimum range of your specials. Though really at this point a tank shocking rhino would be the most effective choice.
