What Would You Add?

Unit HQ: Sorcerer Lord done properly with high end spell casting mixed up the options with retinues full of old school veteran skills and varied wargear additions etc. Something for the modelling option and character creation of the old days.

Troops:Cultists/zealots/mutants/zombies/renegade guard- a simple cheap unit 10-50 size with simple upgrades to take them into the various unit molds. Including a side note encouraging conversions/stand ins etc.

Vehicle:A chaos specific variant of the land raider changing options depending on the Lord's particular alignment. Revamp the old vehicle upgrades add some more.

Khorne's combine harvester with a fighting deck for higher troop capacity but no lascannons.

Nurgle: chem sprayers as weapons. Exploding Nurgle raider could spew chemical waste out of its assault ramp like a monster vomiting up.

Slannesh: Sonic weapons. Amplifiers with LD effecting music. Or just some old noise marines with guitars mounted on top rocking out on their tour bus.

Tzeentch: warp flame gargoyles or a crusader type loaded with inferno rounds. :P Maybe, also acting as a warp energy conduit to boost psychic powers with in a limited range?

Dreadclaw

Land Raider Crusader

Land Raider Redeemer

Screw your rules, man! We've got enough non-vehicle units as is, it's just that too many are crap at the moment. Is it a crime for me to want a useful Land Raider? A Land Raider where you can say it's worth it on it's own, not just because we can spam the AV14?

What I'd like to see..? Hmmm...

I think Cultists are the only possible Troop choice you could realistically add to Chaos Marines; I think these should have the option of being either these or Mutants to (with option to upgrade to big Mutants, I want my new WFB Minotaurs! :D )

As for Vehicles, as cool as I think having a new light Daemon-engine/Stalk Tank-esque thingy would be, I think having Drop Pods/Dread Claws would be far more useful. It would wipe the smile of some of the marine player's at my local club if I could deploy Dreads from 'pods right next to their tanks, at the beginning of the very first turn... :)

As for Character, well I've mentioned this in discussions on other forums regarding the Chaos Legions 'Dex, but my idea would be a new Death Guard Lord who has the ability to raise squads of zombies every turn... Either D6+3 or 2D6, popping up within 18" of him if he passes a psychic test... I think something like that would bring back some flavour to the Chaos 'dex, at least for Nurgle players anyway...

too many Chaos Threads tend to degenerate into a seething mass of hatred and insult hurling

Well if we didnt do that we wouldnt be true chaos players eh? ;)

Unit- cult terminators

hq- hqs more aligned with their mark i.e. khorne lord with furious charge, nurgle lord with feel no pain etc.

vehicle- ability to take marks (oh how i miss khorne rhino's with the destroyer upgrade, Battering rams of khorne ftw)

HQ:

Special Character - A Dark Apostle from the Word bearers, who allows you to take one unit of troops from Codex Chaos Daemons.

Unit:

Cultists, with lots of different choices for equipment.

Vehicle:

I agree with Malisteen, a fast attack vehicle would be great, though I think it should be more like a land speeder, fast with turboboosting and perhaps also with the 'crazed' rule for additional fun.

For vehicle, I'd add a scouting squadron of mini daemon engines to fast attack, acting something like sentinels in imperial guard.

Great post! A lot of nice ideas around here!

For HQ I would really like to see a 2wound leutenant, or a retinue for the lord/sorc. I beleive they hard out EW too freely these days, and I think a retinue body guard would be a nice way to keep your lord/sorc safe from ID weapons, but is still different from EW.

Troops, this one is kinda a tough call for me. While they aren't troops, and even though I wouldn't use them, we need cult termies/chosen/HQ.

Vehicles, Dreadclaws!! Seriously? We're marines dangit, and we don't have droppods/dreadclaws? Also new land raider varients, possibly one entry, bare bones, with the option to give it upgrades, alot like how the predator is, but more options, even options for god specific versions like Heretic outlined above. I would also like tons more daemon engines too! :D

HQ: A Dark Apostle HQ appeals to me - a unit that, whilst not being quite as tough as a Lord - can greatly boost the effectiveness of other units in your army.

Unit: Cultists... Cheap and not-so-cheerful, but with the option to upgrade them into a more effective (but more expensive) troop choice - so, at their most basic, they're mutant meat-shields armed with random CC weapons, but can be upgraded to be essentially well-trained and well-armed Traitor Guardsmen.

Vehicle: Definitely a Daemon Engine, allowing for a great deal of customization. Whilst I too would love Dreadclaws or LR variants, it would be nice to have another Chaos-specific choice which has the potential to fill a variety of roles within a list, be it long-range fire support or close-combat.

Since the chaos threads move a little slowly, hope you don't mind if I make a second insert here out of sheer boredom? Ignored of course in favor of my first picks earlier in the thread. Just to pass time I suppose.

Troops:

Demon Savants, 8 points a model

Statline is of a guardsmen, but with 5+ invulnerable save instead of an armor save.

10-30 squad size.

-Close Combat Weapon

-Counts as a Daemon (For GK purposes)

-May upgrade an icon, normal cost of all the others in the codex: csm.

-May add one of the following upgrades to the whole unit:

Biological Adaptation: Feel No Pain +2 points a model.

Daemonic Strength: +1 strength and leadership +2 points a model.

Unstable: Rage, Slow and Purposeful, Rending +2 points a model.

Hyper Attuned: Furious Charge, Fleet, +3 points a model.

Coherent: Two Laspistols (counts as twin-linked), Frag and Krak Grenades +1 point a model.

Daemonic controlled soldiers, possessed unwillingly in most cases to serve chaos space marines as a general foot soldier. The path often leading to becoming a spawn or worse.

Notice they cost 3 points more then a guardsmen for the 5++, and their icon can benefit everyone. They almost demand having a LD10 HQ join them to lead them into battle. You can get a fleeting slaanesh HQ on steed, or run with a slower HQ on juggernaught and still be worthy. Solving several "unused model" syndrome cases on top of adding a whole new unit. They are also short ranged so to prevent having a super cheap scoring unit to sit in place, they need a higher LD HQ to keep them on the table and all their capabilities are short ranged. Making them not so easy to use for that. I do think the true way a guardsmen army can be combined with a marine army is something close akin to being involved in the personal matters and secrets of the marines they serve with. Its not like a bunch of guardsmen go "hey lets mix our fighting style with marines and use their transports/thunderhawks to hang with them". I cant see that for chaos, more so a horde of lowbie underlings being lead in by an HQ aspiring them to die for his cause.

Vehicle, uh... I second my previous pick here.

HQ, Doomrider... Or if they want to bring cypher and the fallen back, then I'd say he would be cool to add.

3.... sorry I'm going to go over that.

Fix dreadnought.

Fix possessed.

Marks... not icons.

New units.

Dreadclaw: and NOT a drop pod. I want the FW dreadclaw. It is superior to the drop pod and 'should' be based on its fluff. Its slower so it doesn't just land, it is flying above the field for a turn so it can be shot down(but is an armor 12 flyer... not likely) which also means it arrives on the groun a turn after it comes in so it takes longer to get reserves on the ground, BUT you can assault out of it, and get back into it and fly around again.

Cheap HQ. The exalted champion in the FW IAs works well.

Renegades....

Traitors and/or cultists. Maybe make cultists 4pts but BS WS2 with autoguns, and allow upgrades to actual traitors at 2pts a model that makes them BS WS 3 and they have lasguns and can take weapon upgrades. As cultists they can only take an icon. Yes icon... they make 'some' sense on cultists, they do not make sense on marines.

Mutants: cheap, dirt cheap, stupid rambling warriors that run at the enemy in droves. CC focused. Allow a few to be upgraded to big mutants.

Demons: not lesser demons, actual demons.

1.I would want to see some bloodlslaughterer like deamon engine

2.It would be nice to have veteran skills back and i think it would be fitting if chaos space marines had something like whfb "hatred" this would add character to the long war the legions are fighting against the lackeys of the false emperor. Also real marks of chaos, the icons could server some different purpose or just be an extra buff over the marks.

3.Cultists these guys would just be fun to use :)

As for renegades... i would leave the more recent chaos space marines as a sub list of the smurf codex rather than have them wasting space in a codex that should focus on the legions and not some newbie csm renegades

HQ: Retinue, most definintly. bring back the demonic gifts, then allow a couple of the Lord's retinue to take a gift. Allow one to take a banner, maybe an apothacary, then a luitenent or a sorcerer (like a liuetentet sorcerer) then a special weapon or two.... why does the SM commander get his own lackies to run around with and our Lords have to join up with the footslogging troops? so ya... like the SM command or the IG command, but with gifts.

TROOPS: Cultists/mutants/Ex-Imperial soldiers. Give them an aspiring champ for a leader, or a cult father, then allow then to take a special weapon or a hevy weapon (stubber, heavy bolter, morter?) let them take an Icon...maybe 10-20 in a squad?

VEHICLE: like you all have said before, a basic Demon Engine you can build off of, either that or Land Raider Varients like what was posted above.

or maybe a non-demon engine, but chaos specific tank built from a rhino chassis.

There used to be a daemon summoning scenario on the old GW website where you had to buy a Lieutenant with the Sorceror upgrade from the chaos dex and then buy him a retinue from the Daemonhunters codex (for those that dont know the Inquisitorial retinues represent the kind of focus the Inquisitor has so purchasing the also improves the Inquisitors stats as well), I've always thought that would be a better way to go than just going with 3 wound maxed stats Lords.

Cultists/mutants*/traitors.

* including BEASTMAN. A chaos army just isn't a chaos army without beastmen. In the chaos raiding list for EPIC 1st edition Beastmen were actually a mandatory part of chaos marine forces, 2nd edition made them optional but all the studio army's chaos lords had beastmen standard bearers on their stands.

Deranged ideas no-one will like:

Only allow god-aligned squads to have squad sizes that are a multiple of their sacred number (eg: 6/12/18 for Slaanesh)

Have a fixed cost for unaligned squads equal to 7.5 times the basic cost of the squad, but have the squad consist of d6+4 members (rolled when the unit is placed on the table)

Drop regular CSM squads, make beastmen troops.
