Dark Angels Company Master

I'm still getting the hang of taking pictures of these guys, so I had my girlfriend give it a shot. She succeeded where I failed. ANYWAY, here he is, in his not-yet-glued-or-painted glory, Raziel, Master of the Dark Angels Fifth Company.

First, the pieces.

And now, the sum of the parts.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v97/wulfenkind/Warhammer%2040000/IMG_0116.jpg

This is my first venture into modeling since a 3-year hiatus. Raziel's inspired by the 3rd Co. Master Orias made by Komodo (giving credit where it's due). He's armed with a power weapon, a holstered plasma pistol, and a storm bolter. Because I don't trust myself enough to not mess up the figure, I went with the "that's an ancient relic bolter that works in a magical fashion and counts as a storm bolter" route. Once I've managed to figure out how to work the camera, I'll try and take better pictures. Maybe after I've base-coated him and ventured into the realm of painting...

Anywho, C&C? Hell, tips on better picture-taking's welcome here, too.

Bit of personal thread-o-mancy here. After a long time at staring at tutorials and at my unfinished minis, I decided to give crafting a cloak/tabard/robe. The previous mini on this thread just didn't seem DA enough to me. So, for your viewing pleasure and criticism, here's a still-WIP revamp of Raziel.

Here's a few shots from different angles, mainly to display the DA bits used to cover up a somewhat fudged-up seam.

This last one's of his helm and the combi-weapon I plan on giving him.

I'm not sure on the combi-weapon, however, as I want to make him a viable option for both company master and a possible Vulkan stand-in. Anywho, comments? Critique?

Merry Christmas Eve!

@Vazturan: The DA-y sword was actually used in the previous version, but when I started redesigning him, I wanted him to be able to stand in for Vulkan He'stan. So in came a bigger sword. I'd actually used it in an even earlier version of him, my first 'true' conversion, when the 'dex still allowed Swords of Secrets to be passed out to Grand Masters.

I did a bit more work on him today, mainly just adding the combi-weapon arm. I need to fill in the ragged gaps around the join; it fit perfectly, until the pin decided to slide all the way into the shoulder and leave me without support. I guess next time, I'll wait 'til the pin's securely glued in the arm. Anywho, on to the pictures.

I'm not satisfied with the combi-melta, though, so I'm thinking about replacing both barrels with the nozzle from a dreadnought heavy flamer, as well as replacing the bolter's magazine with a set of flamer canisters. Thoughts? Comments? I'm going to try and do a dry-fit of him with the head and sword later, before the night sets in.

@rozac: The combimelta's from the Mk1 Veterans.

Thanks for the kind words, everybody. I'm terribly sorry I haven't managed to get any new images up, but the holidays have had me tied down (as I imagine they've done with most). I decided to change out his head for the Corvus-type from the DA Vets sprue, shaved down the small sensor on it and added the wings from the same sprue. I think it adds to the archaic look that I figure would go with wearing a suit of artificer armor. Hopefully, I'll have some pics up today.

I'm pretty sure it was the Mk1 vets. I could be wrong. I got it back when they were initially released, though. Bought a few blisters of them. They had one vet with a powermace, I remember that much. But it's been a few years, so they might've stopped stocking them with those combiweapons. I have the combi-plasma that came with them, too.

Ah, the blisters! They went out of production. I particularly miss the powermace model, that was sweet.

I don't remember ever seeing one with a combi-melta though. That's pretty sweet. Especially as it is the left hand, whereas the Commander one is right hand.

Alrighty, so, finally got some pictures of a mock-up with the head on. These first three are shots of him with the original head, the one from the metal company master.

Now, these next few are of the Corvus-type helm with wings added. Let me be the first to say - shaving down the sensor nubbin so the wings fit evenly is a pain in the rear armor. But I think the finished product looks rather good and fits the artificer look.

Now that he has vowed to be painted, Raziel (now Nuriel, Angel of Fire, yadda yadda) should be seeing some updates. I hope to have his flaming-stand-in-of-doom gun finished and the whole model primed by the end of the week, weather permitting. This'll be my first attempt at actually, seriously painting anything, so stay tuned!

@Capt.: Thanks! I'm not sure what you meant by Ultramarines icon, and I'm not sure if you meant the sword or the helm, but the helm has a skull on the forehead (s'from the DA Company Master mini, so no Ultra symbols) and the sword's from the GK Termies, and it has a design where the blade meets the powerbox. The pictures were done under the light of a desk lamp, so they didn't turn out as good as I was hoping.

However, update! Nuriel had some work done. I felt that his pose was a tad too static, so I tore off his arm and redid it. I think this one works better, and I've come to a decision on the GotF stand-in. Without further ado, pics!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v97/wulfenkind/Warhammer%2040000/IMG_0263.jpg?t=1264370133

These next ones show my depiction of the GotF as wielded by Nuriel. I'm considering either chopping the tank off and running a "fuel line" to his shoulder pad, or adding a second tank. Either way, I think it's better than my original plan for the weapon.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v97/wulfenkind/Warhammer%2040000/IMG_0265.jpg?t=1264370144

And just for reference, this was the original GotF (or Bolter of the Forge, really...).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v97/wulfenkind/Warhammer%2040000/IMG_0257.jpg?t=1264370424

The sword's blade'll be remaining the same. It just broke off in transition, so I have to reattach the bastard. There's also the unsightly gap to the left of the tabard which I still have to find something to fill with. Maybe some rope, or something.

Anyway, thoughts?

Big thumbs up to the flamer, the short squat look makes it more threatening and gives it presence. The rest of the model is lovely too - it's going to look fantastic painted up.

Little bit of an update! After choice words were spewed for some time, I was forced to pin the sword's blade onto the hilt, which worked wonders and made me kick myself for not having done it before. The arm holding the sword also had to be GS'd onto the shoulder, and the stub-flamer needed some GSing to fit properly (the cut wasn't even, and I lack files, so every attempt at fixing with an x-acto knife made it worse). Lacking the backpack and some final gluing, which will be done once all the GS is dried, here he is.

I'm still trying to decide what backpack I want to use on him, and whether I want to use a back-banner, an icon of some sort, or nothing at all. Also, here's a size comparison between the stub-flamer and the standard flamer.

first time i've seen this thread and got to say i love what you've been doing.

am not a fan of that helm personally (i find the symbol a bit too much) but other than that love it.

Mind if i pinch a few ideas?

A very nice kitbash, and that is one mean looking sword. That guy is just completely decked out.

My only criticism is with the direction of the head. I think it looks slightly unnatural having the gun raised ready to fire and the head facing the direction of the sword. Personally I would swivel the head so it looks like he is aiming the gun, and the sword could still be considered in a semi rest position.

Cheers!

@lhg033: Thanks, and go right ahead! And I definitely understand about the head; it actually took me a bit to warm up to it, but it works well considering the ancient and ornate nature of the armor he's supposed to be wearing.

@IronDuke: Thanks! I haven't actually decided on a direction for the head yet, and it's just tacked in for the purpose of the pictures. Once the stub-flamer's attached, I'll look at different poses for his noggin. But the gun-hand's wrist is slightly turned in, so it just seems to be an awkward firing pose. I figure I could cut up the wrist a bit and reattach it, or replace it with a different forearm so the wrist is straight.

In other notes, the sword decided to come apart where the hilt connects to the hand, so I had to pin that, too. I wish I'd've thought of this before assembling him. Might have to attach a pin to his neck and his gun, too... <_< The GS work where his sword arm meets the shoulder needs to be cleaned up somewhat as well, but I'm hoping to have him and his accessories basecoated by this weekend. And that means having a backpack chosen, too.

For a backpack, you could use one of the new Legion of the Damed backpacks, or maybe Helbrecht of the black Templars. I seem to remember it not having much, if any, BT iconography. Or you could use an idea I saw Davey8oy on here use for one of his marines. He cut the eagle heads off the commander sprue backpack and glued them onto a regular one. This made them angle downward and it looked very good.
