Dark Angels Company Master

So, it's almost been a month since I posted something in here, so I guess I'll throw down an update.

In a fit of uncertainty last night, I tore apart Raziel/Nuriel (I'm even uncertain about the name, so we'll just call him Dark Angel Guy, or DAG). As with the first time, I didn't feel he had enough "oomph," and lacked dynamic. So I decided to re-redo him. The pictures that follow are what I'm aiming to do with him.

This first picture includes a good majority of the parts that will go into his new self. If you can't tell, he's going to involve a loooot of pinning. I also ended up redoing the hand flamer, which I've lovingly called "Absolver."

These are just images of his mock-up, held together by poster gum.

He's going to get sculpted robes and possibly a cape. And at this rate, I'll never make the deadline for the LPC. C'est la vie, I guess. Anywho, C&C?

Now, just a question for y'all GS-saavy folks. How do I get my GS to stop coming out bumpy? It's like the GS doesn't mix properly or something. Do I just keep kneading it until the bumps disappear? I don't want his robe to look diseased. Any help's appreciated.

And I apologize for the triple-post. I decided to go ahead and give GS-ing this robe a shot. Here's the pics.

I also apologize for the roughness/bumpiness/bloatiness of the robe. This is by far the largest undertaking I've taken with GS. However, I think the end result is relatively satisfactory, and once the arms are on it should look far better. Overall, I'm pretty happy with this one. But still, any and all comments, critiques, and tips regarding how to make the GS not get all bumpy like this are greatly appreciated.

much more dynamic! :tu:

as already mentioned - take out he middle bit where the colors meet.

what are you using for your tools for the gs work? i've found the GW works nicely but wax carving tools can give you a few extra useful tools and a realtively cheap to buy.

@lhg033: I've got these yellow wax/clay tools I purchased at a local craft place. They work pretty well, I guess.

For the next batch, I'll take that bit out, then. Thanks for the advice!

I really am lazy. But after staring at the incomplete model, I decided to take action today and do a little more work. After some debating with myself, I decided that he's not going to be a Vulcan stand-in, and that I'm going to stay true to the Dark Angels codex. So, I present to you, the poster-gum-assembled Master Whateverhisnameisnow Mk.IV. In advance, I apologize for the darker nature of the pictures. It was done under the light of a corner lamp.

The matched swords are count-as lightning claws (THE BLADES OF VINDICATION!...original, I know :)), and depending on the opposition, he'll be armed with either a plasma pistol or a bolt pistol. His base'll feature some sort of angled platform/rubble to anchor him to. Anyway, I'm about as happy with him as can be, since he's my first large attempt at sculpting anything (his Mk.II version was my attempt at sculpting in general). So, thoughts? Comments? Critique?

I think the first Raziel looked quite fantastic as he stood! I don't see why you took him apart, since it seems like you aren't even using any of those bits!!!! <emphasis on the exclamation points.

They both look quite great, but if you look at the most recent robe, and how theres a strip of yellow in it, that means you haven't fully mixed the green stuff yet. Just an observation.

Great stuff.

The BLADES OF VINDICATION are swell too. ;)

@Komodo: :whistling: Yeah, your Master Orias was a definite inspiration. I'm still curious, though - did you fill in the gaps left by cutting out the bolter with anything? After tearing Raziel apart the first time, I took that off and noticed the gap it leaves on the side.

@Shortsonfire: Thanks! I thought he looked fantastic too. But then I got ambitious and unsure. I still have all the parts for both of them, plus a second untouched AoBR Captain I happened to order simultaneously. I might make him again just to have a cheaper version of the figure for different games. And I tried getting the GS to mix together properly, but those yellow strips didn't come apart. Next time I play with GS, I'm gonna cut the middle section like it was suggested I do earlier on. I think the strips add character, though. Patchwork!

I'm hoping most people won't have a problem with the blades counting as twin LCs; I've worked up fluff behind them, too (ancient pieces of wargear, crafted in a fashion similar to the Blades of Reason). I went through quite some trouble to get those things to stay put, mainly the left arm. I found bits that kind-of matched (the right arm's a PAGK Justicar's sword-arm, the left a Vet's), and there's still some irregularities, like the left shoulder being larger. But that's ok. I'm actually quite content and happy with how this one's turned out. Hopefully, once the snow flurries subside, I'm going to basecoat him. Figure I'll work on the base some tonight, and over the course of the next few days finish his assembly. Question, though: should I keep the JP, arms, and head separate until I paint them?

Update time!...ok, not so much. After the passing of much time (and my whole spring break...), he's finally basecoated. I decided on using the JP Chappy's pack, since it's got so many goodies already attached to it, and it's larger as well. Now for the uneventful pictures. They're not very good, so I apologize for that.

On another note, I've been working on something else alongside him, but I'll put those up in a separate thread. I figure this thread's LPC-specific, so I won't bog it down moreso than I already have.

Alrighty, update time!

With time running short for me to complete this vow, which I hopefully will, here's an update on the Company Master.

Now, be gentle. It's my first time...

...painting a mini. Also, I guess I should probably mention that I'm working on a very limited palette, since I don't have all the colors I'd need (like brown...and gold...).

Double-posting for change. Got him pretty much wrapped up today, save his base. I'll have to figure that one out overnight so I can call him done for tomorrow. Now, I'm not an amazing painter, but I'm pretty satisfied about how he came out, considering I put him off for the last minute. College teachers did tell me I was shooting for mediocrity...

He's not going to win Golden Daemons anytime soon, but I think he's alright for tabletop. Once he's assembled and I attach him to a base, I'll put pictures of that up. Again, any comments and criticism for future figures are more than welcome.

Forgive the noobness, but how exactly does one go about using washes?

And a terrible accident has befallen the Company Master, as he fell from my desk last night while I was trying to figure out his base. The metal JP causes him to be too back-heavy, so he tipped back and came undone. One of the beltpouches is now missing...but I'll figure him out by tonight and post him.

you just paint the washes on, they'll dry like paint, they might look a bit worrying to start with as the model's details are covered, but it dries thin enough :D BE CAREFUL make sure the paint is dry BEFORE you put the wash on, otherwise you get a weird mixy effect.

Love the swords btw
