Ragnar Blackmane - My conversion

Hey gang, first time poser, long time reader.

Well, after a decade of waiting (and procrastinating) my first army has been re-released and updated so I thought I would jump in and do a new army. I decided very early on in the piece that I wanted Ragnar leading my force. Only thing is, I HATE the old static model. Well, hate is a strong word, but for a close combat monster, I needed a pose that said more then 'take me I'm yours!'.

So I set out to make a new Ragnar using only bits from the new kit, and the Wolf Guard Termie box. I ended up using an old power sword arm for his Frostfang arm, but hey, I only kinda cheated. I had also never had a crack at sculpting, so I thought I would give it a go. Turns out I enjoyed it more then I thought and after 12+ years in the hobby, it's really given me a new lease on modelling.

This will be a work in progress and I hope to keep the thread updated.

Here are some of the main areas that were hard to do:

Head - I used one of the standard SW heads, and shaved the 'side pony' off and well as clipping the top knot away from the head. I then cut a higher sitting top knot off another SW head and glued it on top. Where I had filed the old hair off, I cut the side vent off a normal space marine helmet and glued it in place near his left ear. I added a plait from another SW head and glued it in the gap under his chin.

Wolfs head Shoulder - This caused me the most angst. I cut away the very lame looking Wolf head helmet from the new kit about 1/3 from the back, and filed it down so that it was straight. I also filed some of the shoulder pad down so that it didn't look like it wa sticking out 'too' much. Thanks to DV8 for the inspiration, it works well mate!

Frostfang - Simply two chainswords (identical) glued together and sanded to cover the join. It looked a little bit crooked (see what you thin in the picture, it was to my eye...and I'm a bloody perfectionist!) so I have now straightened it. Hopefully I'll show that in a new pic.

Wolf Pelt - Massacred the Wolf Guard cape and stuck it back together (well the front paw anyway) using green stuff. I'll add more GS to the back one I get the Wolf Head backpack from mail order. The current backpack it just a placeholder to gauge fit etc!

Let me know what you think.....chances are GW will release a new awesome cast by the time I paint it by next month, it will be just my luck!

Very interesting. I have a couple of qualms, but these are more personal than actual "faults" with the model.

I would suggest getting rid of the wolf tail icon on his left leg greave. It smacks of "Grey Hunter" to me, which he is most decidedly not, plus it's not exactly the most aesthetically pleasing place to put that kind of icon. But that's just me. If you like it, keep it.

As for the wolf head shoulderpad, good on you for attempting that conversion, but I would recommend replacing the "grills" in the mouth with actual teeth. I would also sand down your green stuff triangles because I can see finger-print marks. You can take an exacto knife or hobby blade too and very carefully cut away at the edges to get a sharper point. I would also add at least a second layer of triangles to make the mane more impressive (the original Ragnar Blackmane model has 3 layers of triangles on the shoulderpad).

From the first shot, the chainsword does look crooked. I'd suggest taking a dead-on shot from the side of the chainsword to see if it actually is.

One last thing I would add too are his gauntlets. The original Ragnar Blackmane had some pretty slick gauntlets, which also carried over the overlapping triangle motif (2 layers), with trim on both ends. It's one of those nice touches that I think would make people instantly think "hey...that's Ragnar".

And kudos for remembering he has a braid of hair to the side. I suppose I had best finish painting mine and post him up...

Hmm but the normal Ragnar had this Icon on his greave...cheack the old model...that why some guys use this kind of legs foor the ragnar conversion...and you can also keep the Necklace on his right greave because there you have that Talisman Option and it is also in one of the pictures that showed Ragnar in action...

The pelt head is off the Wolf Guard termie box.

As for the wolf's tail symbol on his leg, I kept that as it was a nod to the old model. I'll get the backpack on, model a cape of sorts and get him painted up. In two minds about adding his layered gauntlets, and am unsure about adding a second layer of mane spikes to the shoulder....I don't trust my skill!

Everyone who has seen him thus far has gone 'oh that's Ragnar!' so I am happy. :P

Yes this is the one. Check the new painted One from the studio in the White Dwarf before the Skaven One...there is a section heroes of the Space Wolves and there you see Ragnar with this Insignia painted onto his greave...its definitly there...and im going for the new studio painted one to match my conversion...

  • 2 weeks later...

Bit of an update, been busy with work, so I set aside today to get more done on ole' Raggy. I think all I need to do now is get rid of the flash on his backpack (I had to wait for GW to get the order in with the wolf backpack...off the SW accessories sprue) and he should be good to undercoat and paint, once I sand back some of the GS on his shoulder too. Thought about adding the teeth to his wolf head shoulder, but decided against it for now. Might see how I go in a day or two!

I have added a cloak and finished it off by adding it behind the backpack and moulding it into the existing pelt.
