thade
By rights this should probably go in the PCA forum, but as it's specific to Space Wolves and I wanted to maximize my odds of getting a money-making response here, I took a small risk and posted in the SW forum. Hopefully the powers-that-be look kindly on my noobishness. *sheepish* So, it's in the title. I'm considering at least a $100 (brush, compressor, etc) investment in an airbrush, but truth be told I'd rather spend that money on models and instead get a $6 can of spray paint. Wouldn't that be nice? Trouble is that the color of Space Wolf Grey is very nearly the color of the sky pre-storm (which is pretty epic). Now I'm looking at spray paint company websites trying to find a color that will do it (or get very close) so that at the very least I'll have only one tricky coat of Space Wolf Grey to do and not the four coats I'm doing for my infantry (regal blue, shadow grey, 2x space wolf grey). I can get it smooth-looking on a marine. Not sure I can do it on a Land Raider or a Rhino. I'd really appreciate any advice you have; pictures would be a definite plus. Thanks in advance. Heimdal
Well, I use the Shadow grey spraycan and add one additonal thin layer with shadow grey from the regular pot. That gives me a smooth surface with the correct color. Personally I use SW grey to highlight with. altmann
I just ordered every blue/gray spray paint from tamiya that they have. I'm going to do a test tonight or tomorrow to see what they look like. Granted I like my SW gray a little darker than the norm. I dug around on the GW site and the only spray cans I found where White, Black, and Matte Clear...and all at a whopping $15 a can. ;) Nevertheless, I saw no Shadow Grey spray can. Is this internet-buyable? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/184469-recommend-a-spray-paint-for-space-wolf-tanks/#findComment-2180127 Share on other sites
CrazyCanuk
It's an old item. They used to sell DA Green, Blood Red, Bleached Bone, Shadow grey as well as some other colors in can form. They discontinued those a long time ago. thade
Damn. So even if I did find a can, it would probably be too old to be useful. =\ It's always something. Warhorse47
Testor's Model Master line hasa couple of colors that sound like what you are looking for. Itermediate Blue Gray and US Navy non specular Blue. Both come in spray, acrylic and enamel and they all always match! Grey Mage
I undercoat with black spray, and then brush over... heavy on the water so it goes on smooth. Three coats. One of the only times I have that much patience on a model. nurglespuss
Or you can cut a couple of steps. Black under coat. Fenrisian Grey (Foundation) Space wolf grey/astronomican grey. space wolf grey. Should be quick and easy for you  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/184469-recommend-a-spray-paint-for-space-wolf-tanks/#findComment-2180598 Share on other sites
lunchb0x
honestly the GW "airbrush" works great with the vallejo game colours and some thinner/water mix...50/50 thinner water, with a 50/50 paint/thinner combo. Brother Jim
I'd recommend going with a "real" airbrush and a compressor vs. the GW hand flamer for the reason that GW's canned air is rather expensive... 100$ for an airbrush and compressor sounds like a good deal (I spent about $300 for my setup), and will earn its money back vs. buying canned air rather quickly, especially if you are painting multiple large tank models. You can also use it to basecoat troops, etc. in addition to your tanks. I've been using my Pasche airbrush with GW paints thinned 50-70% with water with pretty good success on my Blood Angels. I've got some of the third edition Space Wolf plastics sitting around from years ago when I went to reconstitute my Space Wolf force (after foolishly selling my beautifully painted second edition force right after getting out of undergrad because one of my friends gave me so much crap about using Ragnar Blackmane) that I'm going to get around to with some Shadow Gray in the near future... lunchb0x
GW canned air is good for at least 3 tanks. So cost wise, it works really well. But agreed, a traditional setup does work the best. thade
I think for this first tank I'm going to try handbrushing it, if only for the experience. "It's just a Rhino", after all. Set myself up with some music and burn a Saturday afternoon putting on a smooth coat. Perhaps I can basecoat with one of the Testor's you recommend...though it'd be nice if that looks close enough to highlight and settle on. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/184469-recommend-a-spray-paint-for-space-wolf-tanks/#findComment-2180855 Share on other sites
Quillen
Trust me, an airbrush makes tanks way easier and they look way better. There is serveral good airbrushes at a good price, and you can also get compressed air cans from testors and they will do alot of minis. I know I used one can on 2 rhinos 1 razor back and 5 packs. So it can go a good ways if you use it wise. I got a really good compressor at Costco. So now I brush just about everything, and it really speeds up projects. I agree with the above I use a testors air brush - used for models, artworks and car detailing. It also uses an air compressor. However it was given to me around 10 or 12 years ago, but you shuld still be able to pick up a high quality air brush. But yeah, you don't want to be buying compressed air cans just to paint minis, just get a good compressor and good air brush - heavier, but better in the long run. Also makes some cool noise so if you do it outside, by passers think "now thats one tough guy, lets not mess with him". Do it near an old car door panel and they might even think that you are detailing it with some cool flames or feathers or something ;) (yeah, I like car detailing... yet now that I'm getting married in 10 days, I have to do all my car, computer, martial arts and GW purchases before the big day, or I won't be getting anything for a very long time) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/184469-recommend-a-spray-paint-for-space-wolf-tanks/#findComment-2180872 Share on other sites
CainTheHunter
Codex Grey basecoat Badab Black wash Shadow Grey layer Asurmen blue wash Shadow Grey/Space Wolves grey mix SW highlight I used heavy overbrushing technique on tanks with the large Citadel large brush (don't remember it's name, but it's definitely not drybrush). I've tested on a Rhino and it works well. It sounds more complicated than it actually is, but it is really quick (I've done Baneblade with the same technique). The trick is to start with a bit more paint than when You do drybrushing, and then brush it along the hull - it creates some weathering effect as well. Another hint - I use hairdryer to significantly speed up painting.
