The Mechanicon, Great Tournament!

This past weekend, I attended The Mechanicon, an Indy GT in West Chester Pa. It was an 1850 points affair, and man these guys really put on a great Tournament.

The staff was very friendly and really went out of their way to make everyone feel at home, the terrain was awesome, the missions and scoring were different but not unbalanced. Overall a fantastic weekend.

I got to meet some new people, including the famous "Jawaballs" guy Chris, very nice fella, with a great looking BloodAngels army.

In addition to the five games scheduled I got in 2 Games during open gaming on Friday night, and one extra game in on Saturday night, for a total of EIGHT games over the weekend, what could be better, truly Sagas will be sung and there will be much feasting and bragging in the Great Hall.

About 32 or so people attended the Tournament, they wanted more and were planning for close to 70, but I think that is a great turn out for a first year Tournament.

The prize support was insane for an Independent GT with over Four Thousand dollars worth of loot to give away, noone went home empty handed.

There were alot of nice armies at the Tournament, and with their rule of "everything must be at least 3 colors" rule which they said would be enforced, there was not an unpainted model at the Tournament, this made me very happy.

The competition was very tough, and out of a possible 100 battle points, even the overall winner only scored in the mid to high sixties range. Nearly everyone was still in reach of overall in the second day of gaming, an exciting weekend.

I have to say, that my army didn't perform as expected. I don't believe that this was really a list issue. A combination of "Luck of the Draw" and one or two tactical errors made my table top perfomance somewhat lack luster, but thats not gonna stop me from posting the Batreps, if anything, I hope all of us here in the Fang will be able to pick up a few do's and dont's from this weekend experience.

Strange Meta-game at this Tournament, with a Large variety of Armies. In fact I faced more Eldar than Space Marines. Which those of you who know me, did not make me happy. I hate the Eldar...

I did end up walking away with 2 awards the First was the Army Domination award, which was an award given to each army for being the player with the most Battle points at the end of the weekend with their respective codex. I guess I should mention that I was the only Space Wolf player at the Tournament, :D so that award wasn't really that difficult for me to win.

The second award I got was Best Painted, this was a pleasant suprise, and I got some nice prizes for this; Another Canis Wolfborn model (for my 2nd model in my WIP Thunder Wolf Cav unit), a super nice figure case from Battle Foam, and a Box of Trees from Woodland Scenics which I am probably going to make explosion markers with like the ones in the Space Wolf diorama.

So stay tuned, first up will be my warm-up game against the mighty Jawaballs and his awesome Bloodangels army!

Nicely done.

I also dislike the Eldar list. I often do not get along with Eldar players as well for some reason. So, it is an inward groan every time I come across them at a tourny.

Part of the reason I like the SW codex is all the Eldar stopping love available in it.

Congrats on the painting! I am surprised the SW only had one representative with the new codex. But, congrats on that as well!

Looking forward to your battle reports.

Ok, Friday night was open gaming. I wasn't in the hall too long when I met the mighty "Jawaballs" himself. A very friendly fella who shortly after us meeting asked if I would like to play a game.

We grabbed a table, and rolled for a mission. Seize Ground with 5 Objectives with a Spearhead deployment.

He was playing his BloodAngels and was fielding a much different force than I am used to seeing from a BloodAngels player.

His approximate army was as follows: Corbulo, 2x Tac Squads with Rhino Transports, 3x Attackbike squads of 2 each with multi-meltas, 1 Venerable Furioso Dread in a Pod, 1 Venerable Death Co. Dread in a Pod, and 3x Baal Predators.

After placing the Counters it wasn't hard to see where the battle was going to take place, all around an ancient Chaos ruin.

He won the roll-off to determine 1st turn and promptly handed me the honor of going first. I deployed my army in a tight formation in my corner, after deploying, my opponent only place a Token Combat squad with a Lascannon in a ruin in his deployment zone, poised to harrass my armor.

I have first turn, My Dread arrives via Drop Pod assault, I have free reign over the board and advance my force. I open fire on the combat squad with the Dread and kill them all but the Lascannon.

Not much for Chris to do, he doesn't have Drop Pod assault, so all he has to work with in his first turn is his Lascannon which fails to have any effect as my Dread approaches.

In my second turn, my other Drop Pod with the Wolfguard arrives, not exactly what I was looking for. I attempt to tighten my formation, and keep my bikes moving preparing for the incoming BloodAngels, my Dreadnought finishes off the Combat Squad.

The BloodAngels turn begins and they mean business. Decent reserve rolls for Chris as he bears down on my right side and Drops both Venerable Dreads right into my midst.

His shooting isn't overly effective, and I decide I have to concentrate on getting rid of those Dreads, My Bloodclaws holding an objective stay put in their rhino, while the rest of my army responds. The BloodAngels are currently controling the flow of battle, this isn't good.

I fire a couple of Lascannons, 3 or 4 plasma guns, 3 meltaguns, and an Assault Cannon in to the Dreadnoughts...

When the smoke clears, all I got is 2 angry Dreadnoughts, man those Venerable ones can be tough, I'm in trouble.

In his turn things begin to get a bit hectic, he shoots some of my units, and causes significant damage to them. he charges my Large GreyHunters pack with his Furioso, he kill a few of my GreyHunters, I attempt to place some Krak Grenades, take some swings with my Wolfguard's Fist, and attempt to get some rendings with the Mark of the Wulfen, but I fail to do anything to the Venerable Dread (I forgot to use my Standard here, Duh!)

Losing combat, I fail my Leadership check and promptly run! (this would later prove to be a good thing)

In my turn, I bring my Wolflord in with his bike pack to extract their revenge against the Dread. My other Bikers pack goes wide to get to grips with his Attackbikes and take out his speed to make contesting objectives difficult.

My Dreadnought continues his long trek towards the action (was probably a mistake going after that Combat squad with him, sending bikes would have been just as effective, and their redeployment back to the action would have been faster)

My Greyhunters pack rallies.

I manage to take out 2 of his 3 Attackbikes with my Battle leader and his biker pack over the next couple of turns as my Lord and his Biker pack assault the Venerable Dread. Hammers, and Fists flying everywhere we stay locked in combat. I manage to take off a weapon and immobilize it, but those things are resilient.

The area of the Chaos ruins stays thick with combat, Chris has other reserves come in the form of Corbulo and a Tac Squad, along with another Attackbike Squad, but they wont make it in time.

The board is a complete mess at the end of turn 5 and a roll of a die ends the game. We end in a Draw.

Well, a hard fought game for the Wolves, I made a couple of errors.

I should have sent my Wolfguard battle leader out to the "Token" Tac Combat Squad and dropped both pods behind the ruin. I also should have sent my BloodClaws towards the main battle and used the small Razorback pack to hold the Objective that was outside of the action.

I also underestimated the power of those Dreads, if they come in together, its bad news...

I should mention that even though the game ended we decided to play out the other two turns just for kicks to see how things would turn out.

at the end of Turn 6 things were still a draw, but at the end of turn 7 Corbulo had managed to finish off my BloodClaws and he pulled out a win.

Yeah it was, Chris is a great guy and a great player, I totally underestimated those Venerable Dreads. One might not be so bad, but in pairs like that? Ouch is all I can say...

I played a second warm up game that evening, but didn't take any pictures.

Tomorrow, I'll post my report for Game 1 of the Tournament.

Sounds like you didn't get much of a break on your rolls, I know you have some serious AP ability in your bike squad.

Did your dread ever make it into combat or was he the victim of those Preds?

Yeah, I've been slacking, but mainly because I had another Tournament yesterday that I was preparing for. It was a 1500 point, 3 game event with about 15 people in attendance. But that is another story.

Game 1 on Saturday, Vs. you guesses it, Eldar. Only 2 Eldar players in the whole place, and my first game is against one of them. ;)

His list: Farseer with Ghosthelm, Shuriken pistol, Singing spear, Rune armor, Runes of Warding, Spirit Stones, Eldar Jetbike

He had Doom, Fortune, and Mindwar for powers

5 man Warlock bodyguard with Rune armor, Shuriken pistols, Witchblades, upgrades with Embolden, Enhance, and the other 3 had Destructor

10x Dire Avengers with Exarch in a Wave Serpent with Bright lance (twin linked), Spirit stones, Vectored Engine, Star Engine

Guardian Jetbikes x4 with Warlock with Singing spear, Rune armor

3x Vipers with Cannon upgrades

3x Fire Prisms with all the goodies

Above is a Picture of his Army

Mission 1 Briefing: Dawn of War Deployment, Secure and Control with 5 Objectives, additional points were earned by having all of your Troops survive, having your General survive, Most Expensive unit survives, and for having no enemy units in your deployment zone.

Scoring was interesting, all of the above are given a points value on a chart, for example each objective you control is worth 2500 victory points. At the end of the game you add up all of your points and subract them from your opponents that value is then compared to a chart to determine the winner and the value of the win; Minor, Major, Massacre ect.

My opponent won the roll of for first turn and opted not to deploy anything. Using Dawn of War deployment, I could only deploy upto 2 Troops and a single HQ. I opted to only Deploy my large GH pack with Assault cannon toting Wolfguard in a wooded area just a few inches from an objective marker.

In his first turn he brought on his army moving everything fast, as it was night fight and the only thing I had on the Board was a single GreyHunters pack.

In my turn, I bring on my whole army, and one of two pods. I elect to drop the Wolfguard on an objective to contest it early and take some shots at the vipers which moved fast in his turn to do the same.

All of my Armor moved onto the board and popped smoke preparing for the heavy Eldar Firepower I thought would be coming my way. I inched my Greyhunters pack forward further into the ruin and turbo boosted my bikes ahead of my army to lead the charge.

AND THEN!?!?! Oh you are a coy one.

I've been to tournaments before where there were 30 or 40 people, 2 or three playing Eldar, and I got to play all of them.

And they all ran the same list.

It's really a slap in the face.

Also, hurry up with the rest of the batrep! :)
