Land Raider WIP

Recommended Posts

First post, hi everyone.

I tend to paint too neat and tidy, so for this project I decided to do the opposite. Did a heavy blue wash over a sprayed on basecoat, over black primer. Wiped the wash with a wet brush while it was tacky, leaving most of it in the recesses and corners. Rewash, and corner highlight. Added some weathering here and there (which I had never tried before). Pretty happy with the results. What do you think ?

At first it's a little scary. The contrast is really stark, and jagged. But with the follow up wash it'll even out. The major down side..., you can't exactly touch it up later. I did rust and weathering on a few spots that I got red onto. Didn't notice there was paint on my finger. lol
when you say it was a basecoat spray, was it sprayed with an airbrush?

No, I actually used this...

And I used applebarrel paint no less (for the base coat only). I would do it differently if I had to do it again. I have an airbrush, but no compressor yet.

that thing looks neat. might have to buy one and try it out :)

excellent.

it looks very neat and clean. the eagle on the front entrance looks particularly good.

my only question is regarding the blue,

perhaps it's personal taste, but the blue is outrageously clean everywhere else, I'm wondering if a very small touch of rust might improve it a bit.

it's too late to do now, but there's an excellent tutorial for rust at this website:

just to keep in mind for the future ;)

well done!

I agree. But like I mentioned, I usually paint very clean colors. I've been painting SM since 2nd edition. The style and "look" of ultramarines has changed quite considerably. Back in the day it was all about white undercoats, and bright yellow and orange shoulder bands. Now it's all black undercoats, dark foundations, dark dry brushes and washes.

Example- (he's a bit dusty)

I paint old school.

The trick now becomes how to merge the newer style with the old. I like the new look, but I have 1500 points of the old. I'll have to meld them in a way that fits me I guess. This is all table top stuff though, so I can't sweat the details too much.
